Canadian TV Shows on DVD - Page 4

That goes back "longtemps"

I think I have the book somewhere.

I probably said this earlier, but I do hope that CBC gets around to restoring many of their shows and releases them on DVD. I'd buy The Beachcombers and Cariboo Country, and I'm sure I'm missing others that deserve release.

My Canadian TV wishlist is a DVD release of both Twitch Cityseasons--there are only 13 episodes! Don Mckellar created, wrote and starred in the series, along with Molly Parker and Callum Keith Rennie, some of the best contemporary Canadian actors still making Canadian films and TV appearances.

I'd also love to see the entire Made in Canada series on DVD (Rick Mercer is brilliant) as well as as the third season of Trailer Park Boys (which I'm sure will happen--can't wait for the fourth season in less than ten days!), the new season of The Newsroom (and the TV movie Escape from the Newsroom).

I'm looking forward to The Kids in the Hall and SCTV DVD releases!

I think Traders is out on DVD since I saw it at Future Shop.

Does anyone remember a show called The Odyssey (I can't post URLs, but it's show 3813 at TvTome) ? It was about a boy who is in an accident and ends up in a coma, during which he travels through a world (run by kids) in his mind. It had a nice science fiction / fantasy feel (good costumes and sets) and interesting literary references if you pay attention for them.

I used to watch this show on CBC years ago (I remember seeing the episode "To the Lighthouse" when I was reading the book for class). I can't even find it on VHS - I would love to be able to get it on DVD. Season 3 was kind of a mess, but Seasons 1 and 2 were excellent.

im gonna disagree with this whole post.. All canadian programing (IMO) is garbage. I am Canadian so im not bashing (ontario here ).. Anyway I just found all canadian shows to be dull and boring.. not to mention technecally challenged. I will stick with the American made shows.

I mostly agree.
There are some good shows though. The ones that I liked while growing up are Due South, TekWar, Once a Thief, Raccoons and that's about it.

TekWar: season 1 comes out on DVD tomorrow. I plan on getting it. I hope the 4 TV-movies are also released.

You at least grew up when production value meant something up here. Pity those so unfortunate - and luckily I'm not one of them - to have grown up with no-budget dreck like STARLOST in the early 70's, with the likes of master thespian Robin Ward.

You have to consider that the Canadian talent pool is nowhere near as extensive as in the US.

There is so much talent coming out of Canada but like here in Australia, that's just the problem, the talent is coming out. The work is in the States and I guess if they want a real shot at a regular pay cheque they have to head out. You can't blame them but it is a shame and doesn't leave a lot to play with for local productions. It takes a couple of the braver and more bankable actors/directors/writers, etc, like Paul Gross, to really stick around and make it happen in their own country.

Having said that, I'm casting my vote for the rest of Made in Canada, the rest of Due South (which I believe is just around the corner) and one of my favourites, a 12 parter called These Arms of Mine - I loved that show. Actually, I liked Alex Carter so much in that series (and in Made in Canada) that I'll take a punt on one I never saw and say that if Black Harbour ever came out I'd probably buy it to check him out.

I'm in for the rest of Made in Canada, and I'd also like to see An American in Canada.

Id also like to add North Of 60, that show rocked.

Wasn't THE REZ spun off of that?
I still have the Dear Aunt Agnes theme song stuck in my head.

I'd buy just about anything I used to watch on TVOntario as a wee tyke.

I wish they would release Blue murder to DVD. I would like to check out DaVinci's Inquest season One (out on DVD now, but it seems hard to get online and I don't think I will be making any trips to Canada soon).

David, DVDsoon.com has is listed as "in stock" for CA$56.98. DVDboxoffice.com also has it listed but it's CA$74.95. You need to type it in as Da Vinci's Inquest in the search, nothing comes up if you don't put the space between the 'Da' and the 'Vinci'.

am I the only one that remembers 'The Frantics' and "Four on the Floor"????

I used to listen to The Frantics when they were on CBC Radio! I've been listening to some old clips and I'm surprised how their humour still holds up. Mr. Canoehead, Bill from Bala, Suicide Watch, Mrs. Sarnickey...

Canada also does not have a star system the same way that American shows do, and a familiar face from an old show could stand a chance in a new series in the US.

Actually, the French Canadian market has a HUGE star system and entertainment industry which has successfully produced shows that achieve almost unthinkable ratings (3 million viewers in a market of between 7 and 8 million people). The industry is strong mainly because the French Canadian culture has no equivalent anywhere else in the world, which encourages the local talent to make something for themselves and for the general population.

And yes, familiar faces from older shows do succeed in moving on to newer shows. Now only is it welcomed by the audience, it's also expected from the high quality talent pool. Typecasting doesn't seem to happen here anywhere near as often as on TV shows produced in the States.

Does that include The Polka Dot Door?

I just got this e-mail from the CBC Boutique:

Quote:
Although quite popular, the series "An American in Canada" will not be available for sale in the near future. Feel free to contact us in the coming months for any additional information we may receive.
We are pleased to inform you that the "Newsroom" season 2 and the film "Escape from the Newsroom" is scheduled for release this coming fall. Although we have confirmed its release date, we have yet to receive any information regarding pricing.

So some good news from the Corpse...

That really sucks. I would have bought An American in Canada so fast. That show is so funny.
I'm starting to think the CBC may not have the home video rights to "An American in Canada"... S&S Productions may still hold those.
"An American in Canada" is showing on HDNet in glorious 16:9 Widescreen...

Intresting. Does S&S do the Red Green DVDs? I know S&S owns anoather show I loved two years ago on the Comedy Network called The 5th Quadrant. It was hillarious kinda of a cross between The Daily Show and The X-Files.
