Canadian TV Shows on DVD - Page 8

I got the first two seasons of The Newsroom from Goldhil. Season 3 is coming out on April 11th. The big disappointment about season 2 so far is that only the 13th episode with the alternate ending is in Anamorphic Widescreen (everything else is in 1.78:1 Letterboxed).

OK, as someone who has seen only a few Canadian series (Due South, Hangin' In, Road To Avonlea, and Danger Bay), are there Canadian shows on DVD that any of you can recommend to me as a blind buy? Sitcoms, dramas, adventure series, primetime soaps?

Has anyone had problems getting through CBC's Audience Relations group? I had a TV-on-DVD related question to ask them, but I haven't been able to get through. Their phone number is 1-866-306-4636.

Charles, my first recommendation would be Corner Gas, a sitcom based in a small town in Saskatchewan. The writing is brilliant, as are the actors. The first two seasons are available on DVD.

I just wish VSC would do more to promote the show.

Does anyone here know who owns the DVD rights to the 80s Canadian adventure series "Danger Bay" starring Donnelly Rhodes? Also anyone know of any good independent companies in Canada that handle their TV-on-DVD releases well? For example, one that would provide "Danger Bay" (if they could get the rights) with complete and unedited season sets, with good audio/video (for an 80s series), and bonus extras with the show's cast and crew?

Re: Canadian series that are worth a blind buy....

Just saw on TV Shows on DVD that the first season (six episodes) of "Slings and Arrows" is being released soon. I've been enjoying it on the Sundance Channel -- one of the most intelligent and entertaining shows I've seen in a good long while. I hope we also get the second season released on disc, and I hope there's a third season made....!

I'm buying Slings and Arrows S1 as soon as it comes out, but I've read somewhere that the entire series will be released once the third and final season airs.

On VSC's website they mention that Don McKellar's Twitch City will be released on DVD in 2006 (though there's no official release date). Since there are only 13 episodes I would expect a single set. Another season of Puppets Who Kill on DVD is also mentioned.

Don't forget Trailer Park Boys S5 comes out on April 25, coinciding with the already-started sixth season (and a few months before the TPB feature film!).

I would love to see Odd Job Jack, the Canadian animated series voiced by Don McKellar, released on DVD.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Jim Beaver, I also remember "Student Bodies". It was on Fox in the late 90s. I don't think they ran through all the episodes, as the show was getting low ratings. I would love to see it again though.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

I just watched a few episodes of Kenny vs. Spenny the other day and that show is brilliantly funny. I also had the pleasure of meeting both of them this past Tuesday and met up with KerryK for our yearly meeting at the CEN06 Awards.

I've got a full write up of it on the site, but Kenny and Spenny have agreed to be interviewed on The DVD Marquee, which should make for quite an interesting show.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Hey, Shane: Nice to see you again, hope you had a good time in T.O. (Too bad your Senators won and my Oilers lost last night!) Glad you liked Kenny vs Spenny. Season three is shooting right now so there'll be more insanity on Showcase soon.

Puppets S2 is 99% set for June 27, we just recorded the commentary this week so it's just a matter of finishing up.

I'm trying as hard as I can to get Twitch City out this year. I literally was digging around in someone's storage room the day after the awards show trying to find materials, this is a slow-going project.

Corner Gas S3 will be Sept or Oct. We're working on some really cool packaging that I hope everyone will like.

There are a few other Canadian TV shows that might happen too...

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

I hope SOMEONE up there has the good sense for "This is Wonderland" S2 & S3...

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Hey Kerry. Yes, it's a shame that their series will be over tomorrow, but I'd like to see the Oilers advance as well.

Sweet. I can't wait for Corner Gas: S3. One of the best Canadian sitcom's ever!

Me too. I was rarely (if ever) home when TiW was airing, but when I got the first series on dvd, I really enjoyed it from beginning to end, and really look forward to having a chance to see the last couple of seasons.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

As far as I'm concerned, I don't even care about extras, special packaging, or anything else that is above board. All I ask is that the remaining seasons of This Is Wonderland are released. Provided that the sound and picture quality meets those of Season One, I will be there the date that they are released, cash in hand and ready to watch...

I'd even be willing to pay a bit extra if that is what it takes to get the other seasons released!

Kerry, any chance of getting CBC's "Danger Bay" released through VSC? I haven't seen this series in years, and I would love for it to be finally put on DVD. If you do, I hope you can get hold of the cast.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Danger Bay is not coming out through VSC, well we don't have any rights anyway and our schedule for 2006 is pretty full. And all of you who are waiting for Wonderland, it does not look good, sorry.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Thanks Kerry. It sounds like you are working on some exciting things. It's really cool to look back to the beginning of this thing and see people talking about how they would like to see Twitch City on DVD and now it looks like it's actually happening. It's amazing what can happen it a few years

I still would to see Edison Twins, An American in Canada, Student Bodies, Seeing Things and of course Puttnam's Prairie Emporium out on DVD but it sounds like you have your plate full this year so i'll keep crossing those fingers

Looking forward to Corner Gas Season 3 and it will be neat to finally see Twitch City.

Chris I don't know if you know this but Danger Bay is on the channel Prime, so while your waiting for the DVD to come you can watch everynight if it's still on. Cool show by the way.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Well Twitch City was always in the works, it just took a while to get it to the point where we could start working on it.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

No mention of the 5/2/06 release of The Red Green Show: 1997 Season yet? I've read one review that says an episode may be missing from the set. Can anyone confirm?

"Getting Along Famously" has been delayed to September 12 so the CBC can rebroadcast the series this summer.

Which would be cool, if I get Prime, which unfortunately I don't. Thanks for the heads-up though.

Thanks, Kerry, for responding.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Question for Canadians:

Just how popular is TRAILER PARK BOYS up there? I love the show, just got the new season on DVD, but BBC America no longer airs it. It seems most people in the US have never heard of it. I just get the yearly DVD release. And there is going to be a movie?

Also, both DANGER BAY and THE EDISON TWINS aired on the Disney Channel in the US. Had totally forgotten them until reading this thread (now I'm singing the themes).

The Trailer Park Boys is very popular up here, despite not being on a major network (it airs on cable channel Showcase). Season 6 just ended last night (a very funny episode to end what I thought was a mediocre season--and only six episodes!), although with the hockey playoffs and the Edmonton Oilers being the lone Canadian team left, I don't know how many people have tuned in.

Prior to writing and filming Season 6, TPB creator Mike Clattenburg directed Trailer Park Boys: The Big Dirty, produced by Ivan Reitman. It's being released in the summer in Canada, but if it does well, they'll look at an American release. The film is intended to be prequel of sorts to the series, featuring established and new characters. It's up there with the Strangers With Candy prequel vying for my attention this summer (I'm not a summer blockbuster fan, Superman Returns notwithstanding).

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Cara Pifko's short-lived series "Our Hero" is now available to pre-order through the show's production company Heroic Film Company. It's the first two seasons (it's half-hour show) plus extras. According to the official website (http://www.ourhero.tv), it's a limited edition DVD set.

Thanks Chris, that sounds very cool I'll have to get it. I only saw a few episodes here and there but it's awesome that it's on DVD even if it's a limited release.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

I have some news on Beachcombers DVDs. Jackson Davies posted on the Beachcombers board over at imdb and had this to say about any possible DVD release.

"Re: DVD’s and VHS.
I have been working with CBC Marketing (great people) trying to release some DVD’s and I’ll keep you informed on that, I’ll also have some info on www.thebeachcombers.ca.
I was hoping for a “Best of the Beach” DVD that we would release right after the CBC airing but that’s gone unless I can change CBC’s mind.
Maybe I can get a “sponsor” like A&W or Boston Pizza whose “demographics” are the same as the series, to sponsor the DVD's. We did 375 episodes so we have a lot of product and other then those 85 shows that have played Showcase, TV Land and a few other channels, the rest haven’t been seen since 1985. "

That's too bad CBC dosen't know what there missing. I think Beachcombers would sell very well. Hopefully there's some news in the future.

Here's the link to the full post here.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

I don't know how well it would sell, but I would greatly prefer season sets of the Beachcombers over any "best of" collection. It is sad that both the CBC and the NFB seem to be clueless when it comes to the home video market. I suppose it could be due to using public money to produce shows/movies, rather than private investment, which would be more inclined to exploit their products however they could.

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

VSC's website has an official street date for Twitch City: The Complete Series: September 19, 2006! They even have cover art for it! This is THE TV series I never thought would come to DVD fruition! Now if only Twin Peaks S2 can come out this year...

Re: Canadian TV Shows on DVD

Excellent news-I only ever saw about 2/3 of one episode of Twitch City, but based on what I saw, I'll probably buy the complete series. Who is VSC though?
