What was wrong or overly P.C. with Casino Royale? I saw it a while back so I don't remember a lot of it.

No doubt showing my age Michael, but I remember him well as Esquire’s film critic—and from the odd piece in the New Yorker. Personally I always thought that he was a bit stuffy and did not really like movies.

Later in life I read some of his political essays—none of which can be commented upon here. And I must say he seemed more at home as an intellectual (where pretension is at least more understandable) than as a film critic.

Agree with you about THE MATRIX. I could never get what people loved about it. I too found it very boring, confusing, without purpose. It just doesn't grab your attention and make you want to see what happens next. Also, I found I did not really care about any of the characters. I guess you would call that poor character development.

Wow, if you guys think Casino Royale is worse than Moonraker, Die Another Day, or The World is Not Enough, than God help you. Moonraker was just goofy as hell, World was not very fun to watch, and Hale Berry RUINED Die, not to mention invisible cars that drive well on ice. WOW!

There have been any number of ridiculous suggestions for the worst movie made that have been posted into this thread. Why should the thread be shut down over the mention of CASINO ROYALE?

It is only his opinion and, while I don't agree with him, he should be as free to post it as someone who would mention THE MATRIX is.

Also, quoting him and saying the words describe his analysis is basically a personal attack, while he is only attacking a movie.

I think MAGNOLIA is an awful film. Not the worst I've seen (at least I could finish watching it, unlike MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL) but, for me, it was a truly terrible movie: yet, most others here consider it a masterpiece. For the life of me I can't figure why but, hey, each to their own.

I wouldn't call this the worst movie ever made, but it was a bad moive with one of the worst decisions -

Last Action Hero, where the child sidekick of Schwarzenegger handles a gun for a lot of the final parts of the movie. Ahnold even gives him a gun at one part. I'd love to see the session where someone pitched that as a good idea.

Oh c'mon. This thread never had any rails to go off. The OP's list of "worst" movies included Deliverance; so how seriously can anyone take the concept of "worst movie ever made"?

Think of this thread as a place where people reveal themselves. I mean, now you know that I could barely sit through "the two best superhero movies in the past decade". So when I say I liked Iron Man, you know that it's either high praise, or that there was something really, really wrong with Iron Man.

Why is it so difficult for some to resist defending movies in a "worst movies ever" thread -- to the point of making dire predictions of thread closure or even wishing it?

Soul Plane - This film left me feeling dirty, violated, empty. The kind of film that makes you lose faith in life. Serious, my world is a little darker now. I wanna just huddle down in a corner when I think about it. Someone please make it go away

Seven Swords (Chat Gim) - Atrociously lenghty Kung Fu piece of shit that doesn't even begin to make sense. Long as a rainy day in Kentucky.

Because I said so -- the most recent addition to this list, terrible in every way I can think of, not one redeeming element.

Some times I look back and wonder what compelled me to sit thru the entirety of these movies. I actually get angry thinking about it.

I finally saw a good part of Plan 9 from Outter Space for the time the other day. Man, I am sorry to say that I was not dissapointed, it definitely lived up to it's abysmal reputation. But of course, even that can be enjoyed on camp level.

Okay, a few more to consider:

(1) The Avengers - WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? You have Ralph Fiennes, Sean Connerry, Uma Thurman (dressed in tight catsuits for most of the film), a very good budget, and they still produced a train wreck of epic proportions. I was in a movie theater the first weekend it opened and the critics' reviews meant that there were only ten people (including the group of four I was with) in the theater when the movie started. By its end, there was only our group of four left and we discovered when we got outside that all of us had wanted to leave but thought the others were enjoying it and so pretended to like it. If my memory serves me correctly, it must be the only big budget movie to get its first screening on Brit terrestrial TV at one in the morning.

(2) Casino Royale - the David Niven version. Oh my paws, claws and whiskers - never *ever* criticise the Daniel Craig version until you've seen this.

(3) Practically anything by David Lean. Yes, they're great shots, David, yes, everything looks perfect. Yes, the films are brilliantly edited, but once you get into your colour phase the scripts are ****ing boring and you take an eternity to tell the story. I watch David Lean films for individual showpiece scenes and fast forward through the rest - the man couldn't pace a story to save his life. The one exception is Hobson's Choice, where he keeps the pace going and produces some sublime direction. But: the plot was lifted from a stage play and had a ready-made tight well-paced narrative. If only he hadn't been allowed to go all JK Rowling and produce ever longer and more sprawling products.

(4) Howard the Duck. There are two hours of my life that are never coming back.

I'd forgotten about that one. How they screwed up a concept like that with so much campy history to work with and a great cast is completely beyond me.

Oddly, there are parts of that (scenes, mostly) that I really like, and I've owned a copy since it came out on DVD. I also love the opening credits and some parts of the soundtrack. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of scenes (about half, if I had to estimate) that make me want to throw myself in front of a bus.


For my money, Highlander 2 is the worst ever.

It is the absolute apex of terrible moviemaking, the very paradigm of what it means for a movie to suck. "Highlander II" was the defining lowpoint in the history of studio filmmaking, the touchstone of movie badness. "Highlander II" is more than bad; it is the embodiment of bad, the manifestation of absolute badness. Adjectives do not truly describe how bad this movie is. It IS bad, bad come to life on film.


Every individual part of "Highlander II" is as bad as it can be. The story is laughably absurd, and does succeed in completely ruining the first movie. The script is indescribable, as if children with severe learning disabilities had been commissioned to write it. The direction is atrocious, if in fact the film was directed at all. The editing is a chop-socky job that might well have been done with a butcher knife. The score, which if memory serves was by Stewart Copeland, is the worst score ever recorded for a film, a random collection of flat notes off what sounds like a child's play synthesizer. The acting is farcical, centred around the worst actor in movie history. The set design is nonexistent; they basically just filmed it in empty alleys and basements. Even the costuming and makeup are terrible. Heck, the credits roll badly.


But not only do the individuals parts suck; the movie sucks as a whole. It sucks systemically, if you will. It sickens the heart. It leaves the viewer empty and feeling dirty. It sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks. It is the worst movie of all time.

The only part that I liked in Highlander 2 was when they were counting the bullets they took breaking into the prison. Only cause it was so bad.

The worst part about Casino Royal was the poker, just stupid. Bond has Aces full and the villian has quad Jacks, and Bonds girl said he blew it and he agreed? But I still watch it whenever its on.

Cool as Ice with Vanilla Ice was awful
