Friday The 13th SEs/Box Set Info Coming on September 19th!? - Page 6

ok i want
part 3 in 3d(it's doable specially since spy kids3 will be relased this way on dvd)
part is the easiest since th uk edition is already out.
part 7 would be cool to see uncut or at least with deleted scenes.
clips of deleted scenes from part 4 and 6 are (as well as rare ads and interviews)
h**p://home.comcast.net/~Kat9119/main.htm
i'd like them to clean them up since i haven't ben that mpressed with the image quality.
the aformentioned savini doc would be good
joe bob briggs commentary or excepts from the time he hosted themo n monstervision would be welcome.
also i would like them to include the original poster art similar to what new line did with their NOES set.
mods are welcome to edit my post i just thoght the site should be shared becuse of it's relevance( i like this site but am admittingly new)

Actually the current dvds look incredible. They should never look 'too' perfect or that would take away from the atmosphere. The same holds true for the soundmixes. They do not need 5.1 'upgrades'. They would sound terrible then.

I have seen the original in theaters & the mono mix was excellent, full of power & very frightening.
Ummmm, there is no way to hurt the atmosphere from cleaning up the picture. Any restoration is merely going to make it more like it was supposed to be seen.

I agree with the mono comment. Why the need to 5.1 everything?

Actually, the type of 3d used in part 3 requires a different type of 3d, not the standard red/blue type.
All the movies should be remastered so we get the best print possible with any dust, rips scratches on the print cleaned up. But if the movies are cleaned then there may not be able to insert the extra scenes what where cut and the prints looking horrible like the AOD Director Cut.

I believe a 5.1 would add another dimension to the film specially with the storm approaching in the first e.t.c, I know the Star Trek movies sound Great and if there have the same people working on them, why not add them and also add the mono track for the people who do not have a Home Theater System.I know I would be very happy with both tracks on there.

Anyone heard the commentary track by Sean S. Cunningham yet on the new UK DVD? Is it worth picking up. I already own the uncut R3 disc and I love the documentary but if this commentary is very informative, I may have to pick the UK one up as well.

I have a home theater system & still watch mono films in mono,if the track is included of course

The majority of the time. An original restored
mono mix will be far superior than any 5.1 remix the studio can create for it. Since it never sounds the same & takes away from the film, rather than addd just because it fills more speakers. So mono mixed right is a great thing & not needed for remixes. Yet some people still think O.A.R. is important, but tampering/altering a soundmix is ok. What a contradiction.

So trying to say that mono is only for people without HTF systems,is ridiculous.

As for cleaning the picture up even more so than the current amazing looking dvds? They already look perfect as intended, yet still have that nice semi-grainy but colorful & beautiful image(past releases were washed out & grey, with little color!). Remember grain is good & adds greatly to horror films. Cleaning them up 'too' much can hurt the film rather than add too. The Evil Dead is no longer that shocking or gruesome to myself. Since the image was cleaned & brightened up way to much, that the gross out effect of the gore is gone, since all the FX look very fake & unrealistic. Then the atmosphere which used to be creepy is now gone, since the shadow & darkness is gone with everything as plain as day, even the night sequences!

I would have been happier if The Evil Dead looked like the Basket Case SE dvd. Cleaned up,but not 'too' cleaned up,as grain is still present. The image is nice & raw looking as intended on it's shoestring budget. The cheap FX are still very effective without taking away from the film.

Yet I think this is sadly a problem with dvd. To many people think grain is a bad thing & want their films even the no budget cult titles of yesteryear to appear like a modern film made on a billion doller budget. Yet fail to realize just how much that will affect the film for the worse, rather than better. Afterall they now appear to pristine for their own good.
Also back to F13th with this issue. Some fans have complained about the R2 release looking to good & bright for it's own good. Since the effect of how they did Jacks death is now plainly obvious, that you can see where the fake rubber body connects to Kevins neck. Yet that was never obvious in Paramounts dvd, past vhs & even the theatrical prints. Though some complain about the image being 'dark',when it appears normal & easy to view. Also for those worried about the 'splice' mark before Marcies death. That was also in the theatrical print, vhs,tv showings & Paramount dvd release. It is a 'flaw' with the original negative & will always be there.

Jeff, the 'commentary' on the dvd has been said to just be just the interviews from the documentary running the length of the film. So I'd probably wait to see what Paramount comes up with if you already own a version of the film.

I've had the UK disc for a couple weeks and if you're a fan it's worth picking up. The print isn't as good as the Paramount disc however. The commentary track has Cunningham, the screenwriter and a couple of the actors but this is from interviews so it's not "really" a commentary. Some of what's in the documentary is also repeated in the commentary track especially the stuff Cunningham talks about. If you're a fan the commentary and documentary are decent enough if you don't want to wait for Paramount.

I couldn't agree more. I too, have a 5.1 Home Theater system, and I listen to mono or stereo tracks whenever possible. It really is better than a sloppily mixed 5.1 track.

About grain....Why do so many people hate it? I just don't understand. I *LOVE* film-grain. I think that most people are forgetting that most movies are shot on "FILM" and film is made up entirely of grain. Of course movies are going to have grain; they HAVE too. Of course these newer movies are being heavily filtered of their grain, which causes loss of "fine" detail and too soft a picture. LEAVE THE GRAIN!
I'm pro-grain too. I'd much rather have film grain than video artifacting.

Go Grain!
Go Mono!

For the first 4 Friday movies. I personally dont like the first one much anyways, but I thought that watching them back on the VHS tapes had more of an effect than on DVD.

Sure, the DVD's look better, but I remember back in the day that the darker VHS tapes had more of an effect on me...
I agree, there's no need to clean up the grain, but the nics and scratches on the prints need to be completely removed.

Part 4 also supposedly has a washed out look on the DVD and could use some fixing.

I think the other films look stunning and can't recommend them enough. Compare these to other films from the period...no contest.
i have all of the friday 13th dvds...

an i wont be buying the box set unless its with a reasonable price.. i love extras.. but i am happy with what they have out on dvd now...

but i am a sucker for box sets so i bet once it does come out i will buy it...lol

Update from Savini.com. Not very detailed, but we know there is some progress.

Tom just this past week filmed all the special features, behind the scenes, documentary features for the Friday the 13th Box set DVD. They filmed at Tom's school and from what I was told all went very well.

Alright. Just under a year till we get to see it.
Robert, if memory serves me from even seeing the film in the theater, part 4 has always looked like shit. I could be wrong, but I really don't think that there is much that can be done to make it look better than what it already does.

Just do the films justice and the fans will come...that is message that Paramount should heed.

I'm too lazy to dig up links and post them, but at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors this past weekend, they had a big Friday the 13th Panel, with many of the actors who played Jason, Betsy Palmer, and others, as well as Peter Bracke, who is still working on his big "Crystal Lake Memories" Friday The 13th retrospective book.

Anyways, Kane Hodder said he was about to do a commentary for Part 7, and said there's a very good chance at least that one will be fully uncut. He also said he hoped Paramount would have all the Jason's do commentaries for their respective films in the series.

Wait, I found the main link I was looking for....

I told you guys that you had too little faith in Paramount on this....
Awesome news and great to hear about Kane's involvement.
Here's another mention, courtesy of Arrow in the Head / JoBlo's coverage of the Fango con:

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY 1: Both the "We were Jason" and "Women of Friday the 13th" panels were being filmed to be included as EXTRAS on the upcoming Paramount Friday the 13Th DVD box set. Kane was actually approached to provide a commentary track for Part 7, which I hear will be the Uncut version and so were some the ladies and the other Jason actors. FUCK YEAH! I can't wait to get that set and finally wipe my ass with the initial piss poor Friday the 13th DVD releases. It's about time Paramount wised up!

GOOD NEWS OF THE DAY 2: Both panels were hosted by Peter Bracke, who is presently writing an extensive book called "Crystal Lake Memories" that will cover the whole Friday the 13th franchise in-depth with lots of memoirs from the cast and crew. NICE!

I love the enthusiasm at this site. Sincerely.
I hope they are really at least able to find some of the uncut prints of these films since I have always wanted to see them... All would be nice of couse...

I was reading about this convention a few months ago... I remember Kimberly Beck's (Friday 4) name being on the list for the women of Friday thing, but she never ended up attending...

If these are uncut...or at least the ones they could get proper materials for are uncut, I'm gonna be all over this set. I wonder when Bracke's book is supposed to come out.
I always heard that Friday the 13th Part VII was butchered by the MPAA. I remember seeing a lot of cool gore effects in Fangoria that apparently never made it into the final product.
Drew,

Thats true... But, the entire series was butchured by the MPAA... Parts 2, 6, and 7 getting the heaviest cuts... Part 7 has every single death toned down or cut out completely...
Er don't forget to add Part 5 to your heavily cut list, only 10% of the gore filmed actually made it to the final cut, & that's straight from the horse's mouth - Danny Steinman from a CFQ interview back in 1985.
Simon,

For Part 5 I thought was bad, but I didnt know it was that bad when it came to cuts...

Part 4 which the MPAA was kindest to (IMO) even had much of the gore removed... I remember reading that an a Savini interview (I think. It was someone who worked on the film. 80% sure it was Savini, but it might have been the director) I believe not too long ago... He stated they even had to go back 3 and 4 times to re-edit a death and tone it down... And I thought that the movie got away with pretty much already... I always thought the movie didnt have many cuts, but I was wrong...

Peter's book I believe is scheduled to be release around Halloween this year.

In talking with him while at the convention, he said that at the current count, we are looking at roughly 450 pages of memories and photos. Should be a sweet set.

Peter was wonderful to talk with, though not nearly as long as I would have loved to talk to, and you can tell of his love for the series.

That of course goes without saying that all of the people that I have come in contact with that were in direct involvement with this series feel the same. Despite the fact of the butcherings, the often low (and sometimes no existant) pay, the people hold fond memories of their time spent with Jason, Pamela and at Crystal Lake.

In talking also with CJ, he said that the Jason actor's that day had been interviewed for their participation within the series. He also commented that he was underneath the understanding that cut footage from part 6 would be making a return as well.

Should all this come to pass, it is truly a great time to be a fan of this series. In many respects, the industry and Paramount themselves have always counted this series short on just what it meant to so many people. There is an entire legion of fans of this series that are just as loyal as any Trekker.

Many things are coming and hopefully, it will all be in the forms that we have asked for.

For more information on the series, or just to lend support to this series, visit www.fridaythe13thfilms.com. You will find not only a wealth of knowledge, but many new friends as well.

I just want 1-4 uncut with decent sound and some nice comentary
post #176 of 1200
So, from piecing the splashes of info we got from the Chiller fest & elsewhere, we can acertain that parts 1, 4, 6 & 7 will at least contain cut footage
Now I'm sold on this set.

lets all cross our dismembered bits & pray to Mrs Voorhees that the missing 47 seconds from part 2 are unearthed, along with the 90% of gore snipped from A New Beginning!

So far so good Paramount

Btw Ryan,
Here's a snippit of the interview with Mr Steinmann.

"The censors axe fell heavily on A New Beginning. Steinmann was forced to return to the MPAA nine times before the requisite R rating was bestowed on his film.
"The violence in the film is about 10% of what I shot", bemoaned the director. "Consequently there is very little blood in this one, but the body count is much higher".

Every kill was cut, starting with the first axe in the back. What you see is a kid leaving frame about to swing an axe, and a cloe-up of the victim screaming with the kid vaguely in the background. What was shot was a wide shot of the kid with the axe, and the victim coming towards the camera. The axe bursts through his back, blood spurting out all over. It was a good shot. It had about six chops, but they (MPAA) said "No good".

The throat slashing scene was reduced optically to a bloodless close-up of the victim's face.

The demise of the waitress orginally had an axe going into her body as she falls to the ground quivering. "They said no quivering. We also had to cut the axe, so all you see is her lying on the ground".

Steinmann hated to see some of the gore go because it was responded to favourably by preview audiences. "There were two really big jolts, like the head falling out in Jaws, and they were cut. One was when the guy on the motorcycle gets his head chopped off. Everybody jumped. In the original version it was in three pieces. It was much richer".

Steinmann also bemoaned the fate of another important effect shot. "the girl with no breasts that was killed on the bunk bed had a machete coming up through her was cut. You get the idea, but you don't see the effect Marty Becker made".

Also trimmed was extensive nudity shot by Steinmann. If he had known how seriously the censors would tamper with the film he estimates he could have cut his 33-day shooting schedule to about 25 days!

So am i still the only one gagging to see Part 5 restored?
Nope, I too am dying to see Part 5 restored, especially seeing that its my second favorite film in the series. Paramount really needs to come through on this one.
I knew part 5 was trimmed slightly, but I had no idea it was that extensive. I also thought part 4 was relatively uncut as far as violence is concerned, but I guess I was wrong about that as well. Man I can't wait for this set!
Were the surviving girls from the first two films there?
I've wanted to see New Beginning uncut since I heard Joe Bob describe most of the cut stuff mentioned in that interview. He said the MPAA really had a stick up their asses that year.
Anybody hear if they're getting Job Bob involved with this?
