Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman — the Emmy-winning creative team behind “Band of Brothers” — are mounting a new 10-part World War II mini-series centered on battles in the Pacific theater.

Outstanding! I hope it's just as good as the original mini-series was!

That's good news! Although there were a few episodes of BOB I wasn't too fond of, it was still a very good TV series. The pacific war hasn't been explored at this level that I'm aware of, so that'll be very interesting.

My grandfather served in the pacific, so I am naturally interested. And if its any where near what BOB was, I am sold.

Think any of the BOB cast will return and be re-cast?

Umm, Todd this is real. When Easy company was fighting in Europe, the pacific war was going, and the war ended before they could be transferred

So there would be no crossover

jeff I KNOW that, but that does not mean you can't use cast members? The war was real, the show is NOT.

I doubt it. The producers went to extrordinary lengths to attain realism in the show, like by having the names of the REAL soldiers withheld until the end of the show, to give the feeling that anyone could die at any time. They want it real, and I don't think they would spoil that by crossing over with their last series. Put a whole new group in, have them train together and bond, without the guy saying, "in the last series, it was way tougher..." etc, spoiling that chemistry that was marvelous in the first run of the show.

Also, the actors chosen for the roles in the original BOB were selected not only on ability, but a resemblance to the actual soldiers at the time. Ron Livingston, for instance, looked pretty close to the actual Lewis Nixon.

I agree also on bringing in a whole new crew and basing them on an actual crew fighting in the PTO. Has anyone heard if they'll be marines, or on a USN fighting ship?
I wonder if they'll cover the suicides of dozens of women and children when the marines landed on Okinawa? They all jumped off a cliff, with the helpless marines watching from below -- they truly believed that the marines were coming to rape them all.

The “Pacific Theater Project” is not based on any existing source material but is expected to follow a company of soldiers through the island campaign

I really hope they include the Okinawa landings if the above is true.

This is the first time I've ever heard anything about women and children commiting suicide beacause they thought U.S. Marines were going to rape them. Are we to believe that the Japanese army fed the women and children of Okinawa this lie?

Karl_Luph: The Japanese propaganda machine was just as sickening and cruel as our own. In addition, their media was more state-run than ours, so the people believed many rumors, among those was that American soldiers were rapacious beasts willing to kill and rape (not necessarily in that order).

Any more news on this series? Confirmations from Stomeve Spanksberg, HBO, etc.?

Looks like Spielberg is also doing a miniseries for TNT:

I have also heard that Tom Hanks is working on a miniseries about the American Revolution.
