That's just the old VHS cover, with the flopped artwork. Also, the main title on the cover should be the one used in the film (and in advertising), black letters with a blue (or green glow).

Well, we're rushing headlong into October...

Any recent news for this release?

Peter Staddon said The Fly would "probably make it into 2004, but no promises". 2004 isn't gonna last much longer.

How close to the end of the year was it before Fox finally announced the Alien Quadrilogy last year? If I recall, they cut that very close.

Yeah that was officially announced around the beginning of November I think for release just a month later. Or maybe it was around the end of October. I definitely remember it being less than 2 months notice.

I can pretty much tell you not this year. I know someone involved in the film and he said he's been approached about doing an interview for the special features and/or to be part of a commentary track. What this means is they haven't started dealing with the extras yet (or at least that part of the extras). I'd find it hard to believe they could do commentaries, shoot interviews and get this whole thing packaged and ready before the end of the year. My guess would be summer 2005.

Yeah I figured it would probably end up coming out in 1st or 2nd quarter 2005. Hopefully they don't decide to sit on it until 2006 for the 20th anniversary.

I wonder who that "someone" could be. No matter. If this is reliable info, then it would seem 2004 is out of the picture at this point (as I said, Peter Staddon made no promises about it).

David Prior stated Cronenberg was onboard for the commentary, and that was a while ago. Better to spend enough time on the SE to ensure a quality release, methinks.

The Criterion Videodrome DVD was a fantastic presentation of that film. It was really laid out well in every area (extras, menus, packaging, etc.). The *only* ommission was deleted scenes and such, and that was at Cronenberg's request.

Not to have you betray any confidences ArthurMy, but was this "person" approached recently, or some time ago? Did this person already participate in the making of the special features, or is partipation pending? Or did he decline?

Update: My friend has, just last week, shot his interview for the special features. So, that much we know. I asked if he knew when the DVD was scheduled to be released, but they didn't tell him anything. I still think next year, given that they still have to edit, but I suppose if everything were on a fast track it could be this year.

This confirms that this release is fully underway, and that the DVD will include more than Cronenberg's commentary. Hmm.

But the *real* hot-topic issue would be those deleted scenes...

I don't want to give any false hope, but they showed him the deleted sequences. Whether that translates into them being on the disc or just snippets included in the interviews, I cannot say.

ArthurMy, I take your posts on good faith as being the truth (and not the posts of someone trying to create false info/hopes).

That said, your comment does give me hope. We'll see. David Prior said he'd see what he could do about the inclusion of said scenes.

The only reason I could think of as to why your friend would be shown the scenes is to stir up memories. Hmmm.

The very fact that they dug the scenes out for this provides great hope. Why dig the scenes out *just* to evoke memories?

But we'll see.

You forgot his superb adaptation of Stephen King's THE DEAD ZONE, which was made between VIDEODROME and THE FLY.

He mentioned the monkey one as I recall. Can't remember the other. I know it's difficult to take these posts on faith, and all I can assure you of is that I'm just passing on info I was told and that my friend is pretty high up on The Fly food chain.

The monkey-cat scene is the most coveted of the deleted scenes. The butterfly baby epilogue would probably be next on the list (or the insect leg amputation--which is technically part of the monkey-cat scene).

Indeed. I only saw the film in its entirety for the first time about 4 1/2 years ago, but the wait has seemed like an eternity!

Spiffy. Hey, if anyone gets a chance to see it, could they keep an ear out for those sound mix differences I mentioned a few pages back (synth music stings when Brundle sees the fly graphic, Stage 3 Brundle lunges out at Ronnie from the shadows, and Brundle's shadow on ceiling above Stathis in lab)?

AMC is actually showing the *1958* Fly. Hmm.





Animal Planet is airing a special on Saturday night (10/30 as well as 10/31) called "Hollywood's Creepiest Creatures", a special devoted to animals in horror films. Films such as Jaws will be profiled, and there will be interviews with people such as John Carpenter.



The Fly was listed specifically in my TV guide synopsis, as was the fact that Jeff Goldblum would make an appearance.



I don't get that channel, so any info or transcripts would be nice.



I've not heard much from Goldblum about The Fly in terms of interviews and such. Hmm.

Nothing, as usual. Pretty obvious it's not coming this year, and I'll doubt we'll get any solid news on it until sometime in 2005. I'm worried that after all this waiting, its release will ultimately be anti-climatic and disappointing if they don't come through with the kind of extras we've been hoping for in this thread.

Well personally, if this special edition doesn't include the legendary deleted scenes, then YES, I would be disappointed. Cronenberg's participation with featurettes and a commentary would be really nice, but the deleted scenes are the holy grail of this film and it's what I think a lot of us want most of all. Since they are not yet confirmed, I'm already preparing myself for a letdown when the specs are finally announced.
