Genesis on SACD soon - Page 8

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

Or...you could just buy a cheapie Oppo player for your secondary system. The plethora of features you get for only $200 makes it an incredible value. I'm impressed with it even with my main player being an Esoteric DV-50.

As for the backorder comment, the discs don't come out til April 2nd.

I have a Pioneer 59AVi. NTSC player. But it does PAL passthrough (*not* PAL to NTSC conversion). I also have a professional Panasonic plasma. I didn't know this when I got it, but it does accept and display the PAL signal correctly. (With my last CRT TV, I could "watch" PAL discs from the Pio player, but the vertical rate was off. 50Hz vs 60Hz I think, right?)

I don't 100% understand why my combo works, but it does.

A very, very few.

I have no worries as my Cambridge Audio 540D is both region free right out of the box AND does a great PAL to NTSC conversion (it also does the reverse as well as pass each format natively--a handy feature for those who have projectors/displays that can do both formats), so I will get the European sets without hesitation. But 99.9% of players in people's homes in North America will not do what mine or yours does and they, without a gear upgrade, are out of luck if they want to avoid incompatible video/lack of hi-res/double-dipping for two sets of discs.

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

At the worst, you can always use a PC with a DVD drive and playback software to watch the DVD. PCs don't care about NTSC or PAL.

Well, hello there!

The Japanese releases must be region 0 if that's the case. Awesome!!!

Elusive also has a pack of the first 5 sets for $130. (They also sell the PAL sets for $40 each and the set for $180.)

Does anyone know whether these SACDs are hybrids?

I emailed Elusive Disc to see if there was a box set version of these SACD & NTSC dvds they are selling. I included a link to the box set on Amazon.uk. They replied that they never heard of a box set, and thought it was mislabeled and was a cd set. I replied that severalplaces are selling it and it is indeed sacd. I also said that I thought there was no such thing as a SACD & NTSC dvd version available (that seemed to be the story here, right?)

So if they are selling SACD/NTSC single albums, could there be a box set with the extra discin this format too?

So is this a Japanese version if it's NTSC?

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

it sure was easier in the 80s when all you had to worry about was whether to buy the LP, cassette or one of those cee dee things........

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

A friend of mine told me that Steve Hackett is selling them on his site, and that he will sign copies of the ones he was on. The price is comparable to Elusive Disc, so you wouldn't be paying that much more.

Problem is...the DVD's are only in PAL. I want the box set but it's got to be NTSC!

Anyone see any vendors that are going to sell the box set with NTSC DVD's ...post a link!

And once there if you click on the picture of the box you see a picture of what the set looks like inside. Nice

But that works out to $206 Canadian $$ for me + shipping.

No can do

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

Well, as a Brit, the PAL issue doesn't bother me. But it's still expensive (even by Brit standards). It's only because it's Genesis (the only band I'll uncritically buy any product from other than the Pet Shop Boys - weird bedfellows, I know) that I've put in a pre-order for it from Play.com.

Incidentally, anyone noted that the Duke bonus disc contains the Lyceum concert? I have an nth generation copy of it and I long to have a decent version. For those uninitiated in such things, the Lyceum show is reckoned to be one of the best, if not *the* best of the Collins-era shows. Alas, the video doesn't include the full set (that was available audio-only on radio and of course in innumerable bootlegs, often labelled as 'Duke's Source' or similar).

Just ordered from Elusive. Thanks Danny for the tip!!!!

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

I know I have seen this but now I can't find it. Any list of what the bonus tracks are for each disc? I saw over on AVS that the Duke release might have a Live at Lyceum show that is reportedly a pretty good one. Nothing up on Amazon (U.S.) yet though.

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

Took the plunge on the box set from www.hmv.co.jp last night at 11,512 yen (shows as 12,088 yen but drops to 11,512 yen at checkout for some reason). Shipping is another 1,200 yen. At 110 yen or so to the dollar after the credit card fees for foreign transactions, it will be about $120 or so.

Hopefully these really are NTSC Region All DVDs as it clearly states on the HMV site, although I care 90% about the SACDs and 10% about whether the DVDs are viewable.

If you want the full track lists, go to www.hmv.co.jp, then scroll down until you see the "English" link at the bottom of the page. Then search for Genesis and scroll down to the box set. The page that displays when you click it shows the full track lists for the first discs, with a link at the bottom that will bring up all of the discs.

To all recent posters: thanks for keeping this thread alive and thanks for the HMV Japan link -- I gave up on this thread about 6 months ago and just stumbled back over it yesterday. It must have been fate because right after I ordered the SACDs my wife showed me an Amex Gold Card Events email that had Roger Waters coming back to NY in the Fall (I saw him last fall). Right below Roger Waters was the Genesis pre-sale at Giants Stadium that started today. Needless to say, I also bought two tickets today for the upcoming Genesis show.

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

I emailed Elusive several days ago, asking them to verify that the DVDs are compatible with region 1 players, but haven't gotten a response yet.

Those hmv.jp listings make me nervous too -- "Europe imports."

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

Craig- Thanks for the info.

Hmmm... I don't see anything that looks like what they were talking about at AVS: Live at Lyceum. Although the Trick of the Tail live stuff looks interesting.

Please let us know when you get these and if they are what we all think/hope they are.

$120 isn't too bad for all this.

Elusive shows PAL versions and NTSC versions of the single CDs and only the PAL version of the box set. HMV's single CDs match the catalog number of the Elusive NTSC CDs; the HMV box set doesn't match the Elusive PAL box set so maybe we're ok. Elusive wrote me;

> Phil, we found the BOx set and it is SACD but with PAL DVDs.
> We are going to offer it for sale. The US versions are CD and DVD but
> we will not be likely to carry them. The SACDs with NTSC DVDs are from

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

Don't mean to soil this sacd thread with talk of lossy formats , but this Billboard article that talks about their North American concert tour also mentions a box set from Rhino.....with a release date of April 24. I'm pretty sure this is the CD+dvd version for us Americans since why would the article mention a boxset only available in Europe and also the fact it's coming from Rhino (IIRC Rhino is the American distributor for Genesis material).

BTW: CD Universe has BOTH sacd+dvd versions up for preorder:

sacd + PAL dvd for $43.75 and sacd + NTSC dvd for $25.35.

What's the "HON" prefix mean? "HON SACD Hybrid"

CD isn't technically a "lossy" format. MP3 -- lossy. MiniDisc -- lossy. CD -- just lower-resolution than hi-rez formats.

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

I just preordered the box set from
http://store.acousticsounds.com/
http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...7611&sct=music

$129.99 plus shipping, on EMI/Virgin and the DVD's are NTSC, region 0.

Re: Genesis on SACD soon

Hmmm... I thought info over at AVS said that the original 2 ch mixes wouldn't be included?

3 box sets, $130 ea, $390 total?

At least it does look like it won't be too difficult to get SACDs with NTSC DVDs here.

I stand corrected...box set is $249.99 and is PAL. I'll stick with the $129.99 set of 5 cd's/dvd's. It appears that the box set has the first five SACDs/DVDs and another SACD/DVD. Way too expensive for my blood!
Thanks for clearing that up!
