HMV Japan has a pre-order, with a good price, on the first batch. Ironically, they are imported European sets with the PAL DVDs.

If your player doesn't do a PAL to NTSC conversion, then yes. A number of players are capable of this (and it isn't necessarily well advertised) but the majority are not. I'm a big fan of European films (particularly French ones) and I bought a player that does this conversion pretty well (and, in fact, outputs PAL and NTSC in its native format--not all those that convert PAL to NTSC will output a native PAL signal)--one that is region free right out of the box (the Cambridge Audio 540D--don't think it's still available new, though).

As for the DVDs you "can't play", if you have MCH SACD capability, the point should be pretty moot, though, as there are no video extras on the DVD that I know of.

I can't find a hack for my DVD player (Integra DPS 8.3) to turn it into a multi region player. So isn't the point to just wait until the Japan sets are available so that I'll get SACD and DVDs in NTSC format?

The Japanese discs are NTSC but they are NOT region 1 (there is the possibility that the discs, like some concert and music video discs, will be region 0, or all region, but that is not confirmed). If you cannot make the player region-free, then neither the Japanese nor the European DVDs will play on your player (unless, as mentioned, the Japanese disc is region 0). If you absolutely want both hi-res audio AND the DVD-V playback, the only way to be certain is to double order--the SACD from either Europe or Japan AND the US CD + DVD-V release. I just want the SACD MCH hi-res. The DVD (unless it has some interesting archival video footage--which I think unlikely) will be superfluous to me.

Not sure what you mean by "output a native signal"? If I'm in US and get a dvd player which claims PAL->NTSC conversion so I can play PAL dvds; are there different kinds of conversions possible?

I think what he's saying is that he has a DVD player that will output a PAL signal for those with PAL-compatible TVs. I don't know if that's an unusual feature, tho. The conversion to NTSC is more unusual.

A cheap way to do it is if you have a computer with a DVD drive, you can use that. Computers don't really care about whether the source is PAL or NTSC. Course, you also need the software to play a DVD, and you probably need to unlock the region on your drive with a firmware update.

Someone on the Steve Hoffman thread said that the DVDs will be region 0. I sure hope so -- sounds like they include some interesting extras.

There are a number of players sold in the US that can convert a PAL signal to NTSC so it can be seen on a standard US television. However, many projectors can accept and display a native (unconverted) PAL signal as well as an NTSC signal, so a player that can output a native PAL signal can offer a better picture with those projectors (the refresh rate and frame rate for PAL and NTSC are not the same and while players that convert can do a reasonably good job--like mine--there is still a slight judder to the video that some people find annoying and distracting. If I connect my player to a projector, I can feed it a native PAL signal and avoid the judder. I don't own a projector, so the point is moot to me, but some people are bothered by this conversion artefact. The number of players that put out a native PAL signal and do the conversion to NTSC available in the US is a lot smaller than the number of players that can convert PAL to NTSC).

I have to tell you, I was really kind of psyched about these at first. But now with the cost, and the difficulty of getting the SACDs and NTSC video, maybe all the remastered CDs I already have by them are going to be "good enough".

About two weeks ago I emailed Rhino (I'm *assuming* this is who will release these for Warners) about the release date for the CD+dvd versions for the U.S. Don't hold your breath because almost every time I ask them something to do with surround music it takes them at least a month and usually longer to reply. I think they know who I am and are worried that I'll blab the info on forums like this, which is true!

That's the European PAL version. It seems that the Japanese NTSC versions will be available for less than that.

I suppose now that I have 5.1 sound on my PC at home, I could just watch the region 3 DVDs on my computer. I'd really like those SACDs. . .

wow you're RICH!

I'm starting to wonder that the continuing lack of a release date for U.S. versions might mean Warner/Rhino is thinking of dvd-a versions instead.....O.K. I will admit that's being way too optimistic. But if they do, I hope they arrange the audio menu so ALL audio formats are listed i.e. MLP, Dolby, DTS, etc. That way people with players not yet set up correctly for hi-res (six analog outs) can hear something without thinking the disc is defective. DTS does this with many of their discs.

The only rational way of doing this if you're a completist is to get the box sets (of which zilch details of where they can bought, price, etc, as yet).

I shall be just slightly annoyed (Brit understatement) if I get the box sets and then discover there's a change of heart and the extras discs will be made available separately.

Incidentally, for all of my American cousins fainting over the prices - welcome to Britain.

I am totally guessing here, but I wonder how many people are ordering these just so they can resell them on eBay? I've read of similar occurances with other limited-production items (music and non-music related).

Unless your player is region free, you won't get any SACD/DVD-V combination that works in North America. The North American releases will have DVD-Vs that you can watch, but no SACD. You can complain to Warner's for not A) releasing the SACDs or B) for not releasing DVD-A versions. They are the reason North America is not slated for entirely compatible hi-res audio/DVD-V releases.
