I hope the disc 3 extras include a "Why we felt the need to perform unneccessary wholesale alterations just to put in some Nazgul" segment

*Jonny K does some math*

Whoa. Looks like that'll go for what, 70 dollars in Canada? I remember the first EE DVD is about 35 dollars. Yikes.

*weeps quietly*

That's the gift set, not the regular EE release. That's actually $10 less than the previous gift set. Presumably because there's no National Geographic special this time.
^ yeah, but there's the "Evolution of Gollum" documentary.

Is that on a seperate DVD?

I may just get the EE only version this time. The Gollum statue is kewl, but I don't know if I'm willing to pay 30 bucks for it.

Hate to say it, especially here, but I am honestly thinking about not getting it or ANY VERSION OF TTT! I know what most of you are thinking at this point, "Tony, are you on crack?" Well, maybe so, but I didn't really like FOTR , and I have not seen TTT yet .

Hell the only reason I decided to pick up the EE of FOTR was for the extra features, picture quality, and sound.

If it's cheap enough, I'll consider getting it. But I'll probably rent the 2-disc beforehand to see if I like it.

:b

If in doubt always rent.

I'll be buying the Gift Set again, I like the neat packaging and the little polystone figures WETA make. Suits the area that I have my LOTR DVD's.

Followed by the complementary docus "Théoden: How to turn a warrior king into a babbling wuss in 10 easy steps" and "Faramir: This is not the character you're looking for"

Those complaints aside, though, I'm tempted to pick up the gift set this time around (I didn't with FOTR). A documentary on Gollum's development sounds great.

November 18? THAT'S MY BIRTHDAY!

Last year, Episode 2 and FOTR:EE came out the day after my birthday

If didn't like FOTR, you will not like TTT. I found TTT to be a disappointing film, not as good as FOTR, but will be buying it 'cos it's a 4 disc set...and worth giving another chance

All too true! I liked the Theoden 'possesion' twist but much of the rest of his characterisation didn't read true to me. Aah well.

Forth Eorlingas!

C'mon, give ol' Theoden some respect

I don't know. I thought they were pretty different so maybe he will like it.

I'm still out on which I'll buy, which most likely will be the Gift Set. The price better be less than the FOTR Gift Set due to the fact that we get less material in it, including only 1 little statue instead of 2 bookends.
I would have to agree he probably won't like TT if he didn't like FOTR. Yes, there were differences between the movies, but it's really just a continuation. Remember, all three films are really just one LONG movie.

On the other hand, Richard Roeper hated FotR, but gave a to TTT, so you never know. But the "rent first" strategy is probably wise for those who didn't like FotR.

NOt really.
looks like TTT EX ED is another winner to me

Ah the beauty of not reading the trilogy till AFTER the movies thus not comparing the film adaption to the books.
No complaints as to why they made some changes!

Personally I thought the FOTR and TTT were 2 of the best movies I have seen in years and the EE for FOTR was awesome.

TTT EE is a must buy for me!
Conroy, since the books are the source of the movies, and have been around about 50 years longer it's not a beauty, but IMO your loss that you've missed out on them thus far

And if rumors are true, the destruction wreaked in TTT will pale in compare to the outright raping that ROTK is getting.
Looks like a fantastic set. I, for one, am thrilled they are going to have four commentaries on this set as well.

Oh dear. Normally I stay clear of spoilers but if you can point me in the direction of these rumours that would be great.

I was horrified at some of the changes in TTT and had hoped RotK would be a welcome return to being mostly faithful to the book.

Spoken with the hyperbolic manner only Jeff Kleist could muster!
That said, while I am normally one for giving adaptations room to breathe, all the changes mentioned in this thread (plus the contradictions forced upon the Ents) are to the severe detriment of the final product.

And is it just me, or do the extras on the Appendices look close to exactly the same as those found on the FOTR set?

The most distressful rumors I have heard
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

(no Paths of the Dead - Aragorn raises army in Dead Marshes; Sauron takes physical form and fights Aragorn at the Black Gates)

have already been debunked. OK, the Scouring is out, but that's been known for well over a year. PJ has gone on record as saying TTT strayed farthest from its source. Everything I'm hearing about RotK has me very encouraged.

The One Ring.net tracks these things pretty closely. There's also much rumor discussion in the TTT/RotK spoiler thread over in the movies section.
OK, I hadn't seen a debunk on the spoilered rumor, but if it's official and confirmed to be untrue I will tone down from "raping"

However, the Scouring should NEVER have been taken out. I could cut it down to less than 10 minutes of screentime, and the invented "solution" to it is HIGHLY unsatisfactory.

I hope not, even some of the actors were surprised by what was filmed and what was shown, it went from a powerful drama to an (IMO pretty good) action film.

I'll get the EE, no gift set. I'm surprised everything about Gollum isn't part of the appendices, he's about the only thing I'm still interested in. The FOTR set was enough for me, and the TTT:EE material does look similar. Will ROTK:EE be more stale without the possibility of a Gollum like cinematic accomplishment?

On the other hand about TTT:EE, the commentaries have me pretty excited.
Jeff,
That's the price you pay for living in a society that has not 100% read the source book. PJ must serve BOTH audiences as best he can. They have to take some stuff they don't want, and you have to accept some changes.

It might not be the best film FOR YOU, but it seems to suit the different audiences. I trust what PJ is doing. I called him where I thought he failed THE FILM in TTT. But he hasn't failed the book.

IMO,
Chuck

There was no need to make said changes though, 100% no need, just PJ's need to change things to fit his personal whims.

I agree 100% with Jeff on this one. I was very dissapointed when I heard the Scouring was not to be included in the film.

Hopefully, the theatrical TT DVD will include the rebate for the EE, like they did with FOTR.
