Disaster Movies: An Old-Fashioned Non-Draft Tournament! - Page 4

The Sum of All Fears (You put Clark in a movie = I like it. Simplest formula ever. They could probably have Corey Feldman play him and it would still work. OK, maybe not.)

The Stand (I've been stuck here in Boulder for years waiting for the damn plague to start. It's about my only reasonable method to find an affordable house.)

How the heck did I miss this tournament for this long?

Dante's Peak - It even features a Wilhelm. I can see the tourism brochure right now:

"Come visit Dante's Peak. The water is pH balanced to dissolve your grandma in seconds!"

The Stand - I love scenes with deserted metropolis streets (12 more hours till 28 Days Later!!). Also, The Day After is far too real to be much fun for me as a disaster film.

DANTE'S PEAK

THE STAND- One of my all time favorites, and easily the second best King adaptation out there! I treasure this film, but I also really love THE DAY AFTER.

The Stand
(The Day After is excellent, too)

abstain (no Sum)

The Stand easily. Day After is like a b-movie.

The Stand although The Day After was a well done, very scary movie too.

Dante's Peak and The Stand move on.

Next matchups:

Deep Impact

vs.

The Quiet Earth

----

Dr. Strangelove

vs.

The Poseidon Adventure

---

My votes:

The Quiet Earth because it's a great movie and Deep Impact annoys me.

The Poseidon Adventure only because it's the sort of 'disaster movie' I was thinking of when I started this tourney. If you really think I believe TPA is a better film than is Strangelove, then I want what you're smoking.

DEEP IMPACT- I love this film.

DR. STRANGELOVE

I'm with Scott here. Dr. Strangelove is a top 10 film, but it isn't a disaster movie in my mind.

The Quiet Earth (This is more of an anti-vote for Deep Impact)
Dr. Strangelove:..." (I fully understand the reason behind selecting TPA, but I just really freakin' love this movie and have to cast at least one vote for it.)

Poseiden Adventure

haven't seen Quiet Earth

The Quiet Earth

abstain - For this tourney, no rationale exists which could force me to vote for The Poseiden Adventure over Dr. Strangelove

The Quiet Earth and The Poseidon Adventure move on.

Next matchups:

Earthquake

vs.

Piranha

---

Godzilla, King of the Monsters

vs.

The Perfect Storm

---

Two easy picks for me:

Piranha over the silly quake flick and the original Godzilla over the tiresome boat flick.

Godzilla

Abstain (I haven't actually seen Earthquake, but I did go on the Universal Studio's tour!. It was kinda lame, but in a cheesy fun way.)

Next matchups:

Independence Day

vs.

A Night to Remember

---

Jaws

vs.

Night of the Comet

---

My vote goes to Jaws. It's been way too long since I've seen portions of ANTR to vote properly.

I like Independence Day better than A Night to Remember, which is light years better than Titanic, but I can't really bring myself to think of it as a disaster movie.

A Night To Remember

Jaws
