Disaster Movies: An Old-Fashioned Non-Draft Tournament!

Hi all. I do love a good draft (especially during the dog days of summer HAWHAW) but I've been itching to do a plain old tourney. I couldn't think of any good topics and then I did.

Disaster Movies!

For a movie to be eligible for nomination, it must be about (or extensively deal with) some sort of natural (or man-made but real scary) disaster. A movie must be seconded and thirded to be in, and each of you movie-addicted loons are allowed three of each: noms, seconds and thirds.

I'll start us off with a few high-profile titles and then y'all can go from there. Please keep track of your own remaining noms (etc.) although I may be divvying out some more down the road. And please don't forget to dramatically announce your film's corresponding disaster. We start with:

When we do the voting, I'd ask that people do not necessarily vote for the better film - but for how cool/scary/effective the cinematic disasters onscreen actually are. Or a combination of both. Bah, vote how you want. I'm not the bossa you.

Nominated, awaiting seconds:

Arachnophobia - Spiders, more spiders and John Goodman's butt-crack!
Beginning of the End - Giant Radioactive Grasshoppers!
Black Sunday - Looney Bruce Dern and a Killer Blimp!
The Deadly Mantis - Giant carnivorous mantis!
The Fifth Element - Giant evil ball and Chris Tucker and that horrific opera-singing creepozoid!
Ghostbusters - Ghosts and giant marshmallows!
The Grapes of Wrath - Bankruptcy!
Kingdom of the Spiders - Spiders and Shatners!
Last Night - Scarily vague impending armageddon!
Mission to Mars - Boring interstellar whatnot!
Rattlers - Rattlesnakes!
Saving Private Ryan - Astonishingly Realistic D-Day!
Scarface - Um...!
The Swarm - Copious amounts of pissed-off bees!

Seconded, awaiting thirds:

The Day the Earth Caught Fire - Self-explanatory!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space - Extra-terrestrial killer clown invasion!
Night of the Lepus - Giant Radioactive Bunnies!
Testament - Nuclear war!
Threads - Nuclear war!
War of the Worlds - Evil tri-colored aliens!
WarGames - Global Thermonuclear Warfare!

IN THE TOURNEY:

The Abyss - Stressed out underwater marines and misunderstood aliens!
Airplane! - Poisonous fish and a silly doomed aircraft!
Airport - Gravity! (and a mad bomber!)
Apollo 13 - Real-life outer space doooom!
Armageddon - Meteor!
Damnation Alley - Nuclear holocaust in a movie I've never seen!
Dante's Peak - Volcano eruptions and granny-swallowing lava!
Dawn of the Dead - Flesh eating zombies and clever social commentary!
The Day After - Real scary and realistic nuclear holocaust!
Deep Impact - Meteor! And BIG-ASS Tidal Wave!
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Couldn't Be Bothered to Type Out the Entire Title - Nuclear holocaust!
Earthquake - Earthquake! Duh!

I LOVE disaster movies, as I always think about the different ways the world might end, when it might happen, etc., and I terrify myself whenever thinking about such things, so naturally, disaster movies along with horror are among my favorites! Hmm, what shall I nominate? Here we go:

THREADS- horrifying and graphic nuclear holocaust classic.

TESTAMENT- Very unnerving and truly saddening film about a town being killed off by fallout after a nuclear holocaust.

I'll use my third nom later.

I third the very frightening and emotional DEEP IMPACT and the excellent giant ant epic, THEM!.

I don't know if these meet all of your criteria or not, but I'll nominate:

Airplane!
Apollo 13
I'll nominate:

Jurassic Park - Hungry dinosaurs on the loose!
Dawn of the Dead - Hungry zombies on the loose!

At first, DOTD doesn't seem like it fits, but when you think about it...

I'll second:

A Night to Remember
When Worlds Collide

I'll third:

Godzilla
Twister

One nom, second, and third left.

Hmmmm, perhaps I should have just stuck to "natural disasters". These picks are kinda all over the place.

Oh well! If a title's liked enough to be seconded and thirded, then it should be good enough to include.

Off to update the main list. Let's get some more movies in here! Everyone who's participated already gets one free "auto-in" title - but it's GOTTA involve a natural disaster - and it can't be one mentioned already.

Third: Testament & Threads

Sorry Calvin. These ones weren't seconded yet, so American numerals state that they can't be thirdeded. You still have those thirds in your cubby-hole.
Nominate-

Mission To Mars-(Holy Shit This Sux!)

Scarface-(Holy Shit One Man Versus An Army!)

Saving Private Ryan-(Holy Shit D-Day!!)

I'll nominate:

The Quiet Earth - energy field zaps humankind into another dimension, or something!

Titanic - Iceberg and Leonardo DiCaprio! (I do love him, but someone will say it)

The Stand - Captain Trips, the virus we're all waiting for

SECOND:

The Day After - Real scary and realistic nuclear holocaust! (my hometown went kabloooie in that)
Testament - Nuclear war! (excellent film)
Threads - Nuclear war! (the most terrifying of the three)

THIRD:

Mars Attacks! - Goofy aliens who hate us! (Slim Whitman...damn I love it!)
Damnation Alley - Nuclear holocaust in a movie I've never seen! (I have, at the Drive-In, on acid....oooh, pretty colors!)
When Worlds Collide - Aliens with an Agenda!
(Hmm? This is about how 2 planets come too close to the earth, one of them on a direct hit trajectory, and people have to build a spaceship to get to the other before it happens. I read the books as a kid and I always wanted them to make the sequel, After Worlds Collide. I have both in one volume. It's been a few decades since I read them but I don't remember anything about aliens)

My error. I mistook it for another film. I've not seen the film, although I DO remember the old VHS cover.

The one...with the...two planets about to...collide. :b
