Disaster Movies: An Old-Fashioned Non-Draft Tournament!

Hi all. I do love a good draft (especially during the dog days of summer HAWHAW) but I've been itching to do a plain old tourney. I couldn't think of any good topics and then I did.

Disaster Movies!

For a movie to be eligible for nomination, it must be about (or extensively deal with) some sort of natural (or man-made but real scary) disaster. A movie must be seconded and thirded to be in, and each of you movie-addicted loons are allowed three of each: noms, seconds and thirds.

I'll start us off with a few high-profile titles and then y'all can go from there. Please keep track of your own remaining noms (etc.) although I may be divvying out some more down the road. And please don't forget to dramatically announce your film's corresponding disaster. We start with:

When we do the voting, I'd ask that people do not necessarily vote for the better film - but for how cool/scary/effective the cinematic disasters onscreen actually are. Or a combination of both. Bah, vote how you want. I'm not the bossa you.

When Worlds Collide - nothing less than the destruction of the entire planet, and an early entry in the sub-genre of apocalyptic SF.

Also a couple of classic films that deal with radioactivity and humongous critters...

Them! - Gigantic ants terrorize the SW U.S. ( One of my faves from the '50s. )
Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1956) - Giant dinosaur lays the smack down on Tokyo.

I LOVE disaster movies, as I always think about the different ways the world might end, when it might happen, etc., and I terrify myself whenever thinking about such things, so naturally, disaster movies along with horror are among my favorites! Hmm, what shall I nominate? Here we go:

THREADS- horrifying and graphic nuclear holocaust classic.

TESTAMENT- Very unnerving and truly saddening film about a town being killed off by fallout after a nuclear holocaust.

I'll use my third nom later.

Hmmmm, perhaps I should have just stuck to "natural disasters". These picks are kinda all over the place.

Oh well! If a title's liked enough to be seconded and thirded, then it should be good enough to include.

Off to update the main list. Let's get some more movies in here! Everyone who's participated already gets one free "auto-in" title - but it's GOTTA involve a natural disaster - and it can't be one mentioned already.

The Stand - Captain Trips, the virus we're all waiting for

The Day After - Real scary and realistic nuclear holocaust! (my hometown went kabloooie in that)
Testament - Nuclear war! (excellent film)
Threads - Nuclear war! (the most terrifying of the three)


THIRD:

Mars Attacks! - Goofy aliens who hate us! (Slim Whitman...damn I love it!)
Damnation Alley - Nuclear holocaust in a movie I've never seen! (I have, at the Drive-In, on acid....oooh, pretty colors!)
When Worlds Collide - Aliens with an Agenda!
(Hmm? This is about how 2 planets come too close to the earth, one of them on a direct hit trajectory, and people have to build a spaceship to get to the other before it happens. I read the books as a kid and I always wanted them to make the sequel, After Worlds Collide. I have both in one volume. It's been a few decades since I read them but I don't remember anything about aliens)
