No kidding. Making silica salsa... kids these days...

edit - Whoohoo! Page 9!
You mean kids make silica now? Or is it just extracted from the youger kids, where the silica supply is most abundant?
Wait a moment. Where did you come up with the theory that younger kids have the most abundant supply of silica? Do you have any scientific evidence to prove this?

Or do you mean that younger kids have an abundant supply of salsa?

With age, the levels of Silica decline in the body. In our youth, our tissues absorb and maintain high levels of silica and simultaneously our bodies remain flexible, resilient, and energetic with soft supple skin. When we age, our Silica levels decrease and we begin to exhibit other signs of aging such as dry skin, lack of energy and slower healing. It is believed that Silica supplementation may be a part of this solution to aging. Maintaining a regular supply of Silica to our bodies as we age should help us to maintain a more youthful state and to live our lives in minimal pain.

Tony, it's completely Bob Graz's theory. You might want to ask him for the scientific evidence.

Well, do little kids enjoy eating salsa? hmmm....

I do see a problem with Bob's theory, however:

Does silica not dry out things? So if there were high levels of silica present, wouldn't it in fact have the opposite effect, and make our bodies brittle, with dry skin?

Yeah! What about that? I think this Bob Graz guy is just full of crap. He's only trying to create false beliefs about silica. However, us silicaites know the truth! YOU WILL NOT BRAINWASH US WITH YOUR SILICA BEING NON-ABSORBANT PROPAGANDA!

Silica-it absorbs moisture and STINK! That is why they come in shoes, they are supposed to stay there! You dirty swamp feet people!
Hehe, so i work at a shoe place sellin shoes... I was opening a box and out popps a packet of... yup, silica! Curious, i cut it open, and put it in water, expecting it to soak it all up...

All it did was sit there and fizz... I was shocked! Maybe this packet was defective, so i got anther one... Same thing! Could it be?! The silica is not all-powerful? I sat there dejcted, head in my hands, all alone in the stock room... WHY?! WHY?!

Maybe it works better with salsa...

Silica dries things out by absorbing the moisture and pulling it away from the item. Since we have silica in our bodies, it absorbs the moisture and keeps our bodies 'wet'. If not for this silica, we'd probably have no way of holding that high percentage of water in our bodies.

Don't bad mouth the silica

p.s. My name is Mark, and I am.....a Silica-holic.

It's not my theory, I'm just reporting what I find in the "silica literature" on the web. Here's the link, oh ye of little silica faith...

You see, the stink is embedded in the moisture, so when the moisture gets absorbed, the stink gets absorbed too.

Nick, your problem is cutting it open. I think that you need to leave it inside of the packet, because the moisture probably needs to stay inside of a contained area.
Does anyone here work at a mexican food joint? Lets see if we can get Nick to send someone some of those shoebox silica packets, and you can test the salsa theory. We may be getting close to something here.

Just remember not to serve the salsa to people after. It might smell of shoes.
You can buy silica packets here or here.

After reading this entire thread, I have concluded that the little silica packets absorb time.

This thread has indeed been very absorbing.

That is all.
David, you may just be on to something...

Why is it that none of the other brains in the HTF have come to this conclusion? Time.

This requires further research. I do wonder, if the multifaceted silica particles absorb water, is there also some sort time absorbant, like a mini black hole.

Or possibly each silica particle is a tiny unverse. Would that mean that we ourselves are living inside of a silica particle?

Oh, will it eve end?

COMING THIS FALL TO A THEATER NEAR YOU!

HG Wells' presents:
THE SILICA MACHINE!
It gets worse.

Not to bring you down my friends but consider this. Silica is a natural ore that must be mined. If you don't believe me do a google search for "silica mine" and you'll come up with the link I can't post because I don't have enough posts on the forum to direct you to the silica mine for sale in Utah.*

For silica to be mined, there naturally must be miners.

Inhaling silica dust will cause fibroproliferative lung disease. No, I'm not kidding. I get paid big bucks to know this.

[Remove excellent link to NIOSH website detailing miseries of pneumoconiotic lung disease.]

So next time you go ordering a hard drive just because you like the way those tasty snacks go with salsa, think of the poor silica miners.

Say no to silica.

* P.S. We should all go in on this one because one of the derivatives of silica mining is gold, which has some value I understand.

Recent production of 2,500 tons of silica ore averaged 7,605.24 ounces of silver, 217.815 ounces of gold, totaling $122,404.35. Property is designed to service copper smelters with silica, which is needed as a flux in the production of copper. The silver and gold are purchased by the smelter.

At what point did this thread go from a goofy Seinfeld thread, to an episode of the X-Files????

p.s. And why did I dream of being a fireman or astronaut instead of wanting to be a Silica Smelter?
Come on! Let's get off the crazy theories and back to the goofy salsa-y world this used to be!

Tony, We're through the looking glass here! Trust No one! The day you ignore the silica conspirators is the day you wake up REALLY, REALLY thirsty!

ACK! I'm feeling thirsty!

It's absorbing thoughts out of our head.
Oh great.. silica absorbs THOUGHT now?

Well... that explains this whole thread..
Hey! Wait a minute...Silica doesn't absorb thoughts

EDIT: Hey, what happened to the rest of my post
post #265 of 770
Hey guys, so i am at lowes yesterday looking at stacked dado sets. they have two sets for roughly the same amount of money, the one comes in a plastic case and the other a wood case. Since i couldn't see through the wood case i had to open it to look at the blades, and when i did lowe and behold a silica packet was in there...do i really need to tell you which one i bought?

now we can buy more tools and electronics
post #266 of 770
Silica packets absorb moisture. I also read somewhere that they absorb salsa. I wonder if they also absorb the chunky vegatables in the salsa or if you have to pick those up once the moisture is out. Probably just crush the vegatables into a powder and suck them up with a vacuum.
Excellent choice Mike! Gotta make sure we silica enthusiasts have a good selection on hand. You know.. just in case.

Hey! Maybe we should start the HSF! The Home-Silica-Forum!

Obviously, the stuff has absorbed some of my mental capacity, along with thought...

Silica gel is nearly harmless, which is why you find it in food products. Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz. The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can adsorb and hold moisture. Silica gel is essentially porous sand.

Silica gel can adsorb about 40 percent of its weight in moisture and can take the relative humidity in a closed container down to about 40 percent. Once saturated, you can drive the moisture off and reuse silica gel by heating it above 300 degrees F (150 C).
