Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD? - Page 5

Good to know these MOD programs are fully embrasing the double-dipping trends of the past for pressed discs. Maybe they should accept the old DON'T as a trade-in discount for a new remastered edition.

Hear, hear...but the WA did say at that outset that some of these titles might be returning in new editions if demand dictated.

Except the 25% coupon won't work for the new horror dvds that are 30% off too. At least it appears that way for me.

I wonder if that's a ploy to not get the movies discounted too far down where they become insanely affordable. Well, it doesn't expire until the end of the year, which is good, because once the prices go back up on the SciFi amd Horror flicks, you can get them back down again with the coupon.

I'm hoping to acquire at least one at the end of the year. It's going to either be THE GREEN SLIME or the Special Edition of DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK.

Perhaps, the bumping of the remake out of it's initial January release date affected this version, too. Have to wait until next week and see.

Wow !  Finally a special edition, Hopefully it wont be like the warner archive, that took forever to be at amazon.

Well, this is an interesting development, Warner Archives responded to my email about whether this Special Edition was actually coming out, and this is the response I got:

Thank you for your interest in Warner Bros!

Sorry, we do not have any published information regarding an upcoming release for this DVD at the moment. Most new movies and television shows are released onto DVD within a few months. Most of the Warner Archive videos that are being released are not remastered though.

So, what does this mean? I wonder now if my original assessment was right, perhaps, the title was pushed back due to the remake getting pushed back. Ron, do you have any theories as to what this email could mean? I was really looking forward to this one.

Oh no.  Don't make me withdraw the dancing banana.  Please.  Do not.  I beg of you.

I don't know, Charles, it's looking pretty iffy for the dancing banana, at the moment. I seem to think if this was coming out, it would be up for pre-order right now. I should probably go check, since I haven't today.

I wouldnt worry. The remake has been pushed from January to Febuary 11.  Im predicting the special edition dvd will street on either Febuary 1, or 8. So dont expect them to announce anything till at least December.

It sounds like she didn't check into it at all just a basic response from CS...I'm sure she has no clue what Don't Be Afraid of the Dark even is. I would keep the dancing banana on stand by.

So, here we are days away from the remake's release, and apparently there is NO current version on DVD? The Archive version seems to be deleted (I don't know why a MOD disc would ever be unavailable) and there's no retail version that I'm aware of.

These studios no longer seem to understand the idea of a tie-in. There was no Blu-Ray release of the original "Fright Night" either to benefit from the remake.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is now available in a remastered version from the Warners Archives. Check again.

I'm still not sure about this remake, it looks creepy but it also looks, like all remakes and modern horror, to be far too glossy, high tech and polished.

I'm keeping my mind wide open but my gut is telling me that this remake has missed the point entirely.

We will see, I hope I'm wrong.

They've altered the plot to place a little girl (who wasn't in the original) at the center rather than the wife played by Kim Darby. The plot now sounds like the Drew Barrymore sequence from Cat's Eye.

Yeah, I'm staying away from this just as I did Fright Night.  These are films that I truly enjoyed as originals and don't want them messed with.  The were original then.  Why can't we have originals now?  Where are the new classics?

Don't know about FRIGHT NIGHT but the DARK remake is very good and benefits strongly from the guiding hand of co-writer and co-producer Guillermo del Toro, who's no slouch in this genre.

I agree with you on del Toro, but we will see.  I don't see a very strong box office for this one and more than likely The Help will be number one again.  FilmDistrict was able to open both Soul Surfer and Insidious to decent grosses, but both were PG13 and depended on the teenage audience to support the films, but using a young girl as the object of the creatures desire is not a good sell for an R rated film.  Also the genre is tired out for this month, Fright Night and Final Destination kind of used up any mojo for horror films that was out there.  The early reviews have not been very kind either.

Guy Pierce is a good replacement for Jim Hutton and Katie Holmes is always interesting, but Kim Darby gave an amazing performance in the original.  And there is no William Demarest.

Australian veteran actor Jack Thompson is fine in the new film's take on the Demarest part.

Sorry but I guess Irene is going to prevent us from really telling the true story of how the remake will do at the box office.  Without those east coast grosses this weekend the numbers are in the tank.  Thank goodness my theatres are in the south, but then Katrina did it's job them.  My remastered copy arrived today so I have some fun.  Happy to hear you will stay dry.

And Thompson is a very fine actor.

Just came back from the 2011 Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark remake. Big thumbs down! Tedious in just about every respect.

I saw it yesterday and LOVED it. Much better than the FRIGHT NIGHT remake. Will be picking it up on DVD when it comes out,
