I Swallowed Half A Toothpick Last Night

I was eating dinner. My wife made stuffed chicken which is held together with toothpicks while it cooks.
I thought I took them all out but I accidentally swallowed half of one which was buried inside.

I called my doctor and he said it will most likely pass through the digestive system.

Anyone ever swallowed a foreign object before ?

Any advice ?

Just consider it extra fiber Seriously. . eating wood has got to be safer than eating metal or glass, or something else that will not partially digest. That is, if the splinters don't get to you first!

Leila,

That's what I was thinking.

Anyone know for sure if a piece of toothpick will digest at all in the stomach ?
I don't know how much it will digest but if it doesn't pass soon, it may just sit there till it does. Wood is just like other plants/vegetables we eat, just a bit more fiberous. I do know that if you get a splinter under your skin, your body will absorb it in due time so I don't think there's any real risk to your predicament. Obviously, though, follow your doctor's advice.

I don't know about toothpicks, but one night I was making Spagetti and meat sause (I amke a killer sauce) when I was in my teens, sampled the sause and swallowed the bridge from my braces.

Went to emergency, was x-ray'ed, they couldn't find it. THey then said I had two choices, exploratory surgury, or wait to see if it passed in the normal course of things. If any pain started, come back right away.

Never felt a damn thing....

A friend of mine told me about his sister swallowing an earring. His mom wanted it back, so she waited till it showed up. After giving it a good cleaning, it was ready to be worn again.

Your only concern might be that it could perforate your intestine, a toothpick being a sharp object. This could lead to semi-major complications such as peritonitis.

This is pretty unlikely, though. My advice would be to keep an eye on your, er, "output" and watch for the piece of lumber to make an appearance.

As far as swallowing a foreign object, do fortune cookies count?

Good luck,

Jon

My son got a Peanut Butter Captain Crunch up his nose...
My Nephew swollowed a quater and got stuck in throat vertically he could breath but couldn't eat, The ER Doc got it out.

I swolled 12 live Gold fish in college, it was a competition and on the 13th one we had to start chewing. SO we called it a draw and split a $5.00 Coffee Cottage gift certificate (a local coffee house).

I eat my wife's cooking every night and hope it passes through:b

Jon,

How would I know if it did ?

You should have just baked them up in a loaf of bread

The toothpick will likely pass, but if you feel pain you should definitely call the doctor immediately.

Your only worry is if the toothpick wants to come out sideways!

Seriously, you should be okay. Chances are your digestive system will soften the toothpick to the point that all the sharp ends will bend at the slightest pressure. But if in doubt, ask your doctor.

I eat tothpicks all the time. There is nothing to worry about.

That's what I was thinking too, Francois.
Thanks.

Watch your stool for blood or dark color.

Human stomach acid can dissolve razor blades. I don't think swallowing half a toothpick is reason for too much concern.

Shit.

Sorry... I fucking hate synonyms euphemisms

But how long would it take?

Being rather handy and doing a lot of stuff for everybody I've swallowed a fair share of nails, screws, springs and the like through the years. Never really got concerned over it since chewing and digesting pens and pencils in elementary and middle school never presented a problem. Tolerance build up?

Eric is quite correct.

I think you might mean euphemisms, Rob.

I'm sure y'all heard about the woman phoning the hospital:

Woman: "I'm calling to check on my son; he was admitted because he swallowed a dollar bill. How is he doing?"

Nurse: "No change yet."

"I accidentally swallowed half of one "

OH MY GOD!!!!!!! AND YOU HAVEN'T DIED YET!?!?!?!?!?!

hehe... seriously... I've never done anything like that, just hope the sharp end doesn't pierce anything on the way down or out, I guess.

Good luck and good poopin'!!

I want to thank you all for giving me a nightmare last night that I swallowed a toothpick whole and later found it under the skin on my stomach... pulled it out like a giant sliver.

Thanks Shane.

OK, what Shane hasn't told you is that he is one big mofo, over 7 ft tall. He could probably swallow a hedgehog and it would fall right through!

I just can't help but think of Coupling while reading this thread.

Jeff: We were just spending a quiet evening in front of the television. In the course of events I swallowed some of her jewelry.
Steve: You what?
Jeff: There was a swallowage incident. I swallowed an item.
Steve: Right?
Jeff: Now normally when I swallow some of Julia's jewelry
Steve: No no, Jeff please. Normally...has never been used in the sentence before
Jeff: Well, you know what it's like when you've got your own actual real life girlfriend. It's like you got a woman with a nudity switch. Sometimes when she's laying there and she's just so so totally naked, I can't control myself. I just sort of hoover.
Steve: Ok.
Jeff: Obviously now and then in the course of any nudity hoovering you're gonna ingest an item. Now normally, I remain calm, let nature take it's course, and in due time slip the relevant item back into her jewelry box.
Steve: I see.

There's a lot more to that conversation, but I'm sure you all get the gist.

Eating toothpicks is a habit I picked up from my Dad. He will actually throw out totthpicks because they taste bad. I haven't developed this taste yet. I try and avoid metal objects, however I think a couple nails and screws have gone down there. Just drink more coke it will destroy anything.
Well once you actually put the toothpick in your mouth, I wouldn't recommend continued use, so yes, throwing them out because they taste bad would indeed be a good idea.

He eats the toothpicks but there are apparently some in a box that don't have the same taste asa the others.
