Re: Film Noir - LIST

The mention of LAURA in a post on another thread made me wonder what ever happened to the FOX line of film noirs? Each release was so well-produced, with always fascinating extras.

Has the series finished, or has the recession finished the series?

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Has anyone managed to pick up the recent VCI double bill of Reign of Terror/Amazing Mr X. It was supposed to be released at the end of last month but it's still reading as on order from DVD Pacific. I'd heard they were using better material than had previously been the case. Is it out? Anyone got it? Any reviews?

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Thanks for that.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

DVDSavant is reporting the following:

Quote:
I've received a report of a rumor that I believe is probably true: Sony is preparing a really terrific-sounding Noir boxed set, their first. It contains five great titles: Edward Dymtryk's The Sniper with Arthur Franz, Fritz Lang's The Big Heat with Glenn Ford and Gloria Grahame, Phil Karlson's Five Against the House with Kim Novak and Brian Keith, Don Siegel's The Lineup with Eli Wallach and Irving Lerner's Murder by Contract with Vince Edwards. Only The Big Heat has seen a previous release; all of them aregems.

I think this will make a lot of people happy

ME! A hard to find Kim Novak title is always a reason to celebrate.

Thank you, CinéKarine--and Mike Schlesinger if you're out there! Murder by Contract is in my top 10 unreleased.

I'll buy it. You listening, Sony?

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Put me down for a purchase as well!! Very exciting news (if it happens)

Speaking of The Big Heat, does anyone know if a documentary has ever been done on Fritz Lang?

Ditto; quite excellent news.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Good news indeed. I can't think why The Big Heat is in there though - it's already been released and looks fine. Lang's other Glenn Ford/Gloria Grahame picture Human Desire is still MIA and it would have been nice to see it included.

The only thing I can think of is the William Friedkin's 1975 Lang Interview that appears on Disc 2 of Criterion's M. It covers a good amount of history from Lang's perspective. Lang is a fascinating character - a full-fledged bio would be a great watch.

- And thanks for the info on the new VCI double feature - it's been on my "to buy list" and I was wondering if I should sell off my Image Amazing Mr. X. ... here's hoping for a DVD Beaver comparison! I believe the only other Reign Of Terror available is the Alpha Black Book, which is unwatchable.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

With Warner starting to slow down it's regular DVD releases, Columbia is really starting to become my favorite studio for catalog titles...can't wait for this set!!

Same here.

Too bad Human Desire didn't make the cut.......maybe for Vol #2. They have enough quality Noirs for at least another couple of sets.

I would've preferred Human Desire or Knock on Any Door, it would've saved me from now having to get rid of my copy of The Big Heat.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. Unless there's a night and day difference I'm fairly satisfied with the standalone Big Heat, though I haven't watched it since upgrading my HT two years ago.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Remember that none of this has been confirmed yet. So I'm kind of hoping someone got their wires crossed and that Human Desire - the other Ford/Grahame picture - might still be the one coming.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I've noticed there's been a R4 release of Lang's Scarlet Street, which looks like it's been licensed from Universal.
I was wondering if any of the members from down under could comment on the PQ - like is it comparable, better or worse than the Kino R1?

From ClassicFlix:

VCI has announced a June 30th release date for British Cinema - Crime and Noir. It will contain: Blackout (1950), Bond of Fear (1956), Home To Danger (1951), Meet Mr. Callaghan (1954), No Trace (1950) and Recoil (1953).

On the Classic Horror Film Board, Mike Schelsinger says a Sony Sam Fuller set is in the works:

Great, thanks for the link.

Sony is becoming one of my favorite labels. Keep up the good work, Mike Schlesinger.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Looks like all the money I used to spend on Warner Boxed sets will be flowing into Sony/Columbia instead.

My oh my, how things have changed.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I have an awful copy of THE CRIMSON KIMONO so I'd love to get a quality release. That said, the film is a pure detective story versus a film noir.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

This is wonderfully unexpected - excellent work Sony!

Well I never thought my football team would win the Premiership last year.

But it happened

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I'm very new here, and I have not had a chance to read all the replies in this thread. Has anyone mentioned the French origins of Film Noir and some of the French greats in this genre. A few days ago I watched Le Corbeau, and I'm wondering if it could be regarded as a sort of Film Noir. I enjoyed the film immensely.
