Film Noir - LIST - Page 19

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I'd like for two of the three new Fox noirs (if indeed there are to be three
more) to be "Road House" (Widmark, Lupino) and "Slattery's Hurricane"
(Widmark, directed by De Toth).

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Film Noir Collection, Vol. 1
Classic Film Noir, Vol. 2
The Film Noir Collection: Volume 2

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I believe it was also mentioned in the Noir City Sentinel that CRY OF THE CITY is supposed to be coming from Criterion later this year.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Cry Of the City has already been released in both France and Spain (R2):

Phantom Lady has been announced in France for April 4th release:

Re: Film Noir - LIST

A Cry of the City Criterion would make sense seeing as how they released Siodmak's The Killers, hope it pans out.

The Fox rumor is good news, my vote for the 3 titles would be Road House, The Lodger & Hangover Square.

On a side note it still amazes me that given the boom in popularity of classic noirs that most of the studios aren't taking advantage of releasing these.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I'd love to see a Criterion Cry of the City - it is a favorite Noir. Irina is correct, there are French and Spanish editions, which we have compared HERE

I'd love to add a Criterion to that webpage.

Best,

Re: Film Noir - LIST

It sounded like the restoration work and commentary for VIOLENT SATURDAY has been completed, and ROAD HOUSE was once officially released as coming via Anchor Bay. I too would love to see THE THIRTEENTH LETTER, Otto Preminger's remake of Clouzot's LE CORBEAU, with sensational performances by Charles Boyer and Linda Darnell in uncharacteristic roles. Also William Wellman's Cold War noir semi-documentary with Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney. Both are rarely shown on tv.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

In my list remais noirs enough to make 4 more waves in the collection:

Road House
Iron Curtain
The 13th Letter
Hangover Square
The Lodger
Swamp Water
Slattery's Hurricane
Cry of the City
5 Fingers
Man Hunt
Moontide
Dragonwyck (if that one can be considered a noir)

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Not sure if this was posted before but 17 previously released Fox film noirs can be bought together on Amazon for $134.99 (pre-order for March 1 release).

I saw that to, but not so attractive for foreighn buyers because of the additional costs.

Buying these 17 (and even more) seperately at www.DVDPacific.com in Florida is far more interesting.

Not that it matters but DVDPacific.com is located in Florida.

Thanks, mistake fixed! (I bought there more than 250 DVD's... )

By the way, DVDPacific has stock problems with THE SCAR, now order changed in BLONDE ICE S.E.

I was just curious as to what additional costs the foreign buyers have to pay at amazon.com.

The shipping-costst are rather high (in comparison to DVDPacific for instance) and the customs duties.

Thanks for the information! This is very interesting. I live in the USA and buy DVDs from all over the world. I don't recall ever paying for customs duties on the DVDs. The shipping costs vary by retailor but amazon (UK, France, Germany) is pretty reasonable. Besides, amazon also deducts about 17% VAT for orders outside of EU.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Unfortunately, some EU countries, like France, apply custom duties for DVD parcels with a value of more than 40 USD (more or less). And it ALWAYS happens with Amazon parcels. With DVDpacific you have a chance to get through...

Indeed!
However, I NEVER had any troubles with DVDPacific parcels so far. (No additional tax, customs duties, and no damages. Their service/helpdesk, fast shipping and packages are outstanding. Almost all my R-1 Film-Noir DVD's are bought at DVDPacific.)

Anther interesting on-line shop is http://www.play.com at the Isle of Jersey, U.K. However, their packages are rather fragile. In about 4 out of 10 orders, the DVD-cases have been damaged during shipping. But, replacement of these cases are cheap (5 for $ 1.00), so, still an attractive address to buy.

You may find The Blue Dahlia and The Glass Key DVD's at rather low prices at www.play.com by the way).

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Play.com does not ship to the USA.

I also like DVDPacific.com. Their service is fast and their prices are often the best.

I often use www.dvdpricesearch.com for R1 DVD price comparison.

I use www.find-dvd.co.uk for R2 DVD price comparison in the UK.

www.deepdiscount.com is another good site for R1 DVDs. I am not sure if they deliver outside US/Canada.

Fortunately, this is more than just a rumor. Warners said in the recent chat that both were on the schedule for 2008. They indicated that they've finally got good material on AMBERSONS. What wasn't clear is to what extent, if any, this footage contains previously cut material.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Regarding Amazon.com deliveries. Here in Ireland their boxes are easily targetted because of their logo. All 3 of my Xmas packages attracted Customs and 'Postal Handling Charges' (?) of >25 euros ( > $32) so I'll be sticking with dvdpacific.com too. Great customer service.

I'm betting none. Given the legendary status of the lost original cut, I think we'd have heard if a complete print had been located (Christ, talk about newsworthy!). I'm thinking the statement refers to a good print of the cut version, as well as supplements. I'd LOVE to be proven wrong about this, of course.

Sleep, My Love will be released in Germany in late April. http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NKH88E
Maybe it's the same transfer as the Spanish release.

The Man Between (Carol Reed - 1953) was released in Germany in November, 2006:

Born To Be Bad (Nicholas Ray - 1950) will be released in Spain on March 21st.

Caged (John Cromwell - 1950) will be released as part of WB Cult Camp Classics Volume 2 Women in Peril on June 26th in a strange company of The Big Cube and Trog. It will also be sold individually. Cover art is already available at www.dvdempire.com.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I'm glad the film is getting a nice release but I really don't see it as noir any more than THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS is a noir.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Since there is no strict definition of 'film noir', it's really a matter of a personal opinion. What matters is that it's a fantastic movie and, hopefully, Criterion will give it its proper treatment.

This is one of the longest film noir lists I have ever come across:

I'm afraid I wouldn't go that far, Irina. By saying that, one could call "Bambi" a film noir, if one wants to.

Admittedly, defining what is and what is not a film noir is a very slippery proposition since no one basically decided to make a noir like they decided to make a western or a period piece. And yes, different people define noir in different ways, some more inclusive than others. But still, one should have a defined rationale for picking the films they think are noir. Its rather more than personal opinion, which is more of a taste.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I was going to suggest that we here try to develop a criteria. Something along the lines of...

To be calssified a Film Noir it must have 6 of the following 10 (I'm making these numbers up):

1) Anti-hero protagonist

2) Shot in black and white (not exclusive) with murky, shadowy grays.

3) Ex-convict or recent ex-convict characters.

4) Flash-back (remembered) narratives.

5) Occasional obtuse camera angles.

6) Plot derived from the hard-boiled pulp fiction novels.

7) American crime drama or an attempted representation of such.

8) One or more Femme fatales - “an irresistibly attractive women... especially ones that lead men into danger or disaster”.

9) Plot devices of amnesia, shared guilt, pathos, or classic nemesis.

10) Enviornment of the downtrodden, lower classes, or economically depressed.

This is just a sample which I'm sure can be greatly improved upon. I'd love to hear suggestions for other attributes and the numbering system. We could value each with points and to be a Noir it must obtain X points... again just thinking out loud.

NOTE: I am sure there are some very astute film fans that can name some non-noir films that have 6 of the 10 above. That is not what my post is about - it is not a contest.

Anyone have any ideas? We could at least develop a rough guideline this way.

BTW, I just rewatched Ulmer's Detour last night. Might be my favorite Film Noir.

Best,
Gary
