Re: Film Noir - LIST

I would have never have believed that there would be 10 films in the next volume. This is great news!

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Personally, even though I'm aware of most of them, I've only watched 4 of these 10 upcoming noirs from Warners - CORNERED (1945), ACT OF VIOLENCE (1948), THEY LIVE BY NIGHT (1949) and WHERE DANGER LIVES (1950) - and all of them are well worth watching.

If we are indeed getting all 10 in one set, I really do hope that Warners take the double-feature slim-cases route as, frankly, most of these are minor noirs and, realistically, don't each necessitate a SE DVD as with previous Noir volumes. Incidentally, I still haven't purchased Volume 3...or the "Tough Guys Collection" for that matter...!

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I think that the movie selection for the upcoming WB Film Noir set is outstanding. I have seen 9 out 10 movies (I have not seen Illegal) from this selection and all of them are great, a 'must have' addition to any film noir library.

I don't agree that these movies are minor noir. They Live By Night, for example, is a classic of world cinema regardless of its 'film noir' status. Elsa's Lanchester's performance in Mystery Street and Audrey Totter's killer femme fatale portrayal in Tension are simply unforgettable. I think that all of the selected movies in this set are top notch examples of film noir.

Irina,

I certainly wasn't alluding to THEY LIVE BY NIGHT (1949) - or, for that matter, CORNERED (1945) and ACT OF VIOLENCE (1948) - when I dubbed this list as being made up of "minor" noirs.

As I've said earlier, I haven't watched either of MYSTERY STREET (1950) or TENSION (1950) but it's great to know that you think so highly of them.

Mario,

I think it's great that we are discussing this upcoming release. With all our minor differences of opinion aside, no one can deny that Warner has outdone itself this time - a wonderful collection for all of us to enjoy!

The first half is an excellent Film-Noir, the 2nd half (when Ryan leaves the city) the film is an Xmass story. So, overall....hmmm.
I am looking forward to vol. 4; in my opionion on the level of vol. 1.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

X-mas story?...all I can say is you must have a pretty bizzare holiday season then... ...seriously though I think that's more a strength then a weakness, it's like getting two stories in one and it makes sense with the character, one of Robert Ryans best performances I think. Watch his face as he's driving back to the city...you can see it all without him saying a word.

The Bernard Herrmann score is awesome too.

The fact that it ISN'T a typical noir is what elevates it (for me, anyway) beyond the genre and makes it a great film. And yes, the Herrmann score is brilliant... I'm a huge fan of his work, and I'd easily rank it in his top ten scores.

I only mean a story, nice to tv-broadcast during Xmass period (like Wayne's "3 Godfathers"). A hybride: mix of a Noir and a drama; my IMDB-rating 7/10.

Yeah, and with DECOY too. DECOY with Gene Gillie:

...(thumbnail)

"Jean Gillie is one of the more cruel femme-fatales in Film-Noir lore."

DECOY (1946): Jack Bernhard directs a darkly atmospheric, but disjointed Film-Noir that is rife with plot inconsistencies. The film's main virtue is the sinister performance by British newcomer Jean Gillie as Margot Shelby, who is the unredeemable femme-fatale with a history of using men and even resorting to violence to achieve her ends. Gillie is one of the more cruel femme-fatales in Film-Noir lore!

The two halves of the film complement each other; neither would be complete without the other. The entire story follows the classic hero myth. The hero first goes into the underworld; then, through a carthatic experience, he fights his way back to the living world.

The rumored films to be included are:
Act of Violence (MGM, 1949), Cornered (RKO, 1945), Crime Wave (WB, 1954)
Decoy (Monogram, 1946), Illegal (WB, 1955), Mystery Street (MGM, 1950), Side Street (MGM, 1950), Tension (MGM, 1950), They Live By Night (RKO, 1949), Where Danger Lives (RKO, 1950)
When I was back-tracking above films, I noticed, that at least 2 actresses died at a young or rather young age. Jean Gillie (34): DECOY, and Kathy O'Donnell (47): THEY LIVE BY NIGHT.

This reminded me of other Film-Noir actresses, who died at a young, or rather young age, let's say below 59. Actresses like Carole Lombard, Veronica Lake, Joann Crawford, Gloria Grahame, Linda Darnell, Marilyn Monroe.

So, with the help of some pals (names) and the IMDB (causes of death, age) I made a list "Actresses who died too young".
Maybe a bit off-topic, however, I think a lot of Film-Noir actresses are on this list too.

The list (Name - Cause of death - Age)

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I assume Joan Crawford was a type. She was 72 when she passed away.

I have 104 additional actresses in my database who passed away before they turned 60. Some additional names are Judy Tyler,23; Edie Sedgwick,28; Claudia Jennings, 29; Marie Prevost, 38; Gilda Radner, 42; Barbara Bates, 43; Hattie McDaniel, 57; Edna May Oliver, 58.

I'll post the list if this isn't considered too off topic and if anyone is interested.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Has it been officially confirmed that Fox has ended their Noir line? They have made announcements through March of '07 and it appears that the line ended with 20 releases (plus a limited edition "Boomerang") instead of the 24 that were planned originally.

I think many Fox products are grossly overpriced, but their noirs were a nice exception with most titles available for $9.99 or even less.

It's interesting to know that The Blue Dahlia has already been released in Italy, especially with the UK edition coming up very soon on February 5th.

I also noticed that Ministry of Fear (IL PRIGIONIERO DEL TERRORE) has also been released in Italy.
