Re: Film Noir - LIST

Now that we're in October I'd thought I'd ask if Fox has announced the titles of their Q4 Noirs? Apologies if it's been announced and I missed it. After releasing a series of high priced box sets Fox has been relatively quiet on the classic film announcement front. Perhaps they're trying to figure out how to clear their warehouses of Betty Grable and Will Rogers sets?

Re: Film Noir - LIST

It is too bad if those sets really not sell well, because both stars have plenty of unreleased films.

But haven't the film noirs sold decently? I have been waiting for an update about the next set of releases as well.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Maybe not a 100% "Noir", but I think a great thriller series from the '30s:
Secret-agent X-9 (bases on a comic-strip from Dashiell Hammett & Alex Raymond):

Al least a great cover, after seeing that terrible AFFAIR IN TRINIDAD DVD-cover.

* IMDB: X-9 link (with trailer)
* More DVD info I found here.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

2 more Hammer Film Noir sets coming in November.

Volume 4 - Terror Street & Wings of Danger
Volume 5 - The Glass Tomb & Paid to Kill

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Treat this as unconfirmed internet rumor, but a poster on the noir message board called "The Blackboard" says that he's been advised that Fox has no future Noir releases planned.

This posting didn't indicate whether the line is dead or just on hold nor was the issue of whether volumes 22-24 would come out. Another posting said that "Brasher Doubloon" (which was a rumored release) is having rights problems.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Random Speculation: The teaser in November's Criterion newsletter, "Eight million stories. And we've got one of 'em", suggests a CC release of THE NAKED CITY is on the way.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Yeah, however a DVD-release of DECOY (1946) with Jean Gillie would be great too.

Not for those of us in region 1!

On to better news.... according to the latest Noir Sentinel, the next Warner noir set (July 2007) will feature.... drum roll please.... a whopping 10 films instead of the usual 5, two features per disc (presumably with little or no bonus features) for a total of five discs. The rumored films to be included are:

Act of Violence (MGM, 1949)
Cornered (RKO, 1945)
Crime Wave (WB, 1954)
Decoy (Monogram, 1946)
Illegal (WB, 1955)
Mystery Street (MGM, 1950)
Side Street (MGM, 1950)
Tension (MGM, 1950)
They Live By Night (RKO, 1949)
Where Danger Lives (RKO, 1950)

Yay!

Re: Film Noir - LIST

It's a good sign about the Universal Noirs. I have a feeling these will see a Region 1 release later in 2007. (For example, Region 2 got the Preston Sturges box almost a year before R1. I plunked down the money figuring it'd never be released here. Wrong!)

4. Crossfire
5. The Blue Dahlia
6. The Glass Key
7. The Big Steal

I know, very expensive and a bad transfer (see DVDbeaver too).

Re: Film Noir - LIST

The price for The Big Steal right now is 9.99 EU which is not too bad. The quality is not too bad, either.

Good film - wrong version. It's the Dick Powell version in the Universal set (allegedly, it's also available as a box set), Murder My Sweet in the US. Universal has the UK rights to RKO films and generally releases versions inferior to those released by Warners in R1.

OK, however, the additional shipping is € 9.74, makes € 19.73/$ 26.12.
The R-2UK is £ 7.99 /€ 11.99/$ 15.63, including shipping.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Other great Film-Noir news: expected in the Warner "Film-Noir Collection Vol.4":

Act of Violence (MGM, 1949)

Crime Wave (WB, 1954)
Decoy (Monogram, 1946)
Illegal (WB, 1955)
Mystery Street (MGM, 1950)
Side Street (MGM, 1950)
Tension (MGM, 1950)
They Live By Night (RKO, 1949)
Where Danger Lives (RKO, 1950)

It really depends where you live. The free shipping from play.com does not apply to the USA (I cannot speak for other countries). Play.com only delivers to the UK addresses.

As far as buying from amazon.fr, it does not make sense to buy just one DVD. If you order several DVDs, the shipping cost becomes reasonable. Besides, amazon.fr deducts 17%VAT for its North American customers. To ship to the USA, Amazon.fr charges 10.90EU for the first DVD and 1.90EU for each additional one.

Robert, if you'll scroll up a bit, you'll see I already posted this news...

What a fantastic list of titles! Something to look forward to.

Two movies from this list have already been available on DVD:

I absolutely agree. I'll happily take twice the number of films for (presumably) the same price. I'll miss the supplements, but the film's the thing.
