I have this set. The quality is far from perfect but quite decent. I consider it a treasure trove of public domain titles. There are fifty titles in all for under $20. The movies come on 12 doulble-sided DVDs. For film noir fans, I would also recommend Mystery Classics (50 Movie Pack) from the same series:

I have a suggestion for another noir title.

Elevator to the Gallows (1958) (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud) Available in Region 1 (Criterion). A film tough to pigeonhole but you can say that about many of the best films.

Noir elements include:

Femme Fatale: Woman involves lover in plot to murder her husband.

Fatalism: Man is doomed as shown by the black cat that goes by him after he commits the crime.

Moody: Terrific Miles Davis jazz score helps a film loaded with atmosphere

Lighting. This was Louis Malle's first feature and he used natural light whenever he could.

Elevator to the Gallows is a great movie on all levels: cinematography, acting, script, music. The Criterion edition is fantastic.

I am totally with you. There are so many different schools of thought on the subject of attributing film noir. I also prefer classic film noir without any style/genre crossovers.

I'm certainly have a broader definition of noir than many but one has to draw a line somewhere. I guess you could say that line is Where the Sidewalk Ends.

I have not heard any definite news about the release but I was very surprised to find out that the DVD is available for rent at netflix.com.

Well, at least you are candid about it.

I could mention that this is just stuff, but the reality is that I bombed out to Borders when I heard reports that they had Boomerang.

I've grabbed all three copies that the store had. I haven't made the time to watch it yet. The other two copies will go to folks that will be really glad to get them. No way I'm putting them on Ebay.

Rich, I would also be love to get one of your extra copies of Boomerang. Unfortunately there aren't any Borders stores around here, so I wasn't able to find a copy. I was really looking forward to this release, I hope it's just a delay.

Count me in as someone who would also be OVERJOYED to have a copy of Boomerang. I understand that you only have two copies and two people have already shown interest before me (DAMN!) but I thought I would take a number just in case.

Doesn't the fact that the documentary on Warner's Film Noir 3 shows "The Big Steal" & "Stranger on the Third Floor" indicate that they'll be in a future volume soon? Also, one of the people they interview says she is happy to hear that "Decoy" is being revived. The first two are RKO titles, so it seems likely to me, but "Decoy" is a Monogram picture--who owns the rights to Monogram? I think the rest of the pictures shown in that documentary have been released in the 1st three volumes of Warner's Noir series... And "Crime Wave" (also in the documentary) has been indicated that it'll be released.

It just doesn't make much sense to me that Warner would produce a documentary on film noir without promoting current & future releases..

First, I didn’t mean to be such an inconsiderate jerk. I should have realized that posting about extra copies of Boomerang amounts to being a tease.

However, now that I think about it, what better way of getting a noir film into the hands of people that enjoy noir films than offering them up in a Noir thread.

So, here is the deal.

Herb: in thanks for all the effort in creating and updating this thread, I’m offering you a copy of Boomerang (free and shipped). If you already have secured a copy I will offer up my two spare copies to others.

So, I’ll be giving away one (1) or perhaps two copies of Boomerang (new and still sealed). Free. That’s right free (including shipping).

I’ll post four trivia questions to decide who gets the copy (or copies).

Do you want me to start another thread for this contest? If it stays within this thread I would limit it to those that have posted to this thread at some point (prior to this post). Naturally, I’d like to keep it here and keep it to those that have supported this thread and therefore avid noir fans.

If I go to a new thread, naturally I have to open it up to all comers as that would be just another form of teasing: i.e. no ‘win a free copy of Boomerang (but not you) sort of thing.’

I plan on limiting the contest, so this thing doesn’t get dragged out.

So... hey, Rich, if you're giving one copy away in a trivia contest, and Herb already has it... well.... since I was the FIRST one to offer to buy one of your extra copies.... Well, I think you know what I'm asking. I'll certainly play along if you choose to include both copies in the contest. I'm a bit worried that I'll miss the contest, since I don't have internet access during the day (7:45 - 5:45)....

As it is already Tuesday by my watch, the contest offering up two free copies of Boomerang will start tonight @ 10:30 pm. giving the West Coast folks a chance to get home too.

That also gives me time to figure out the rules and a few questions.

That's right.. but I also forgot about the Chanthology box set that contained Monogram's Charlie Chan movies....but it was released by MGM. So, what's up with that? Warners owns the old MGM right? Is Monogram split between MGM & Warners?

Anyway, in regards to my question about Decoy, I guess it was kind of a dumb question in the first place since Warners included the movie in their documentary... Thanks!
