Film Noir - LIST - Page 9

Herb, thanks so much for the link. Not just for that info, but because it led me to a great article about Laurence Tierney. Sample portion:

I returned a minute later with a jumbo-sized plastic Prince of Egypt soda cup. Without a moment's hesitation, Tierney stood up, dropped his trousers, and dispensed a jetstream into the capacious Dreamworks souvenir. I wished Spielberg-Katzenberg-Geffen could have been there. Never has a piece of shoddy, superfluous mass merchandising been put to such immediate and beneficial use.

That apparently occurred during a screening of Born To Kill.

Herb,

Woo hoo! CRIME WAVE is coming! Sweeeeeet! Thanks for the link to that. THEY LIVE BY NIGHT will be most welcome, as well.
And it looks like THE BRASHER DOUBLOON is also coming.
Hey, how about a Philip Marlowe box set?
I don't know which is more exciting, Crime Wave and The Live By Night coming to DVD, or Fast Eddie teaming with James Ellroy for a commententary on Crime Wave.

Thanks Gary... I've got to sit down and do a major cleanup of the list - tons of changes. BTW, I just received the newest batch of French EM noirs and I'm fairly pleased with all of them.

If any of you "noirheads" have a fast internet connection, you may want to try to download some classics at http://www.sladinki007.net/index.php?showforum=196

Interesting selection

In an added bit of related yet blatant self-promotion: Film Noir fans might appreciate Jonathan Rosenbaum's new article on DVDBeaver - Ten Overlooked Noirs.

Thanks Gary.

And I thought I'd pretty much read everything one could read on the topic of noir... that is till I read the distinction of "Closet Gay Noir" and "Deep South Noir"...

Thanks Herb, Gary and Jonathan Rosenbaum. VAL LEWTON HORROR COLLECTION, THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS and THE BLACK BOOK (a/k/a REIGN OF TERROR) will soon be part of my collection.

Have you noticed that DeepDiscountDvd has been consistently and substantially beating Amazon on price?

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Stolen Identity is being released in Austria along with a German-language version of the film, Abenteuer in Wien, and a book (in German only) Austrian Noir. Here's a link to Edition Filmmuseum with more info in English. It'a also available in German Amazon.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

... and to think that Sony is sitting on so many wonderful Columbia noirs ... not to mention all the UA titles they recently took custody of. Will they ever get it together over there?

From Barrie Maxwell's latest column at The Digital Bits:

Paramount has delayed all of its Republic catalog releases previously scheduled for May (Love Happy, Letter from an Unknown Woman, Secret Beyond the Door, Body and Soul, The Dark Mirror, War of the Wildcats, Wake of the Red Witch/Night Riders, New Frontier 1935/New Frontier 1939, Red River Range/Three Texas Steers). No new release dates are available as yet. The same situation seems to have befallen the July releases of A Double Life, Force of Evil, Johnny Guitar, and Pursued.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I sure would like to see "Cry Vengeance" (1954) again. It's been so long since seeing it, I can't really recall how 'noir'-ish it is. But I remember enjoying it. I think Mark Stevens not only starred, but also directed it. Can't recall what studio put it out, and I suppose it won't be showing up on dvd anytime soon. I hadn't thought about "Try and Get Me" (1950-?) in ages, but it also would be nice to see again. Same with "Make Haste to Live" (1954) which I have only a foggy memory of, other than Dorothy McGuire being menaced in a cave. Probably minor-league stuff, compared to the classics, but I do miss these darned things, which used to be such staples of late-shows.

Another oddball film was "Rogue River" (1950), which most folks are apt to regard as a western. But, it was a contemporary story about the aftermath of a bank holdup, shot on location in a small Oregon town. Being in color, and shot somewhat blandly, its 'noir' quotient is probably rather nil. But, I always found it a rather intriguing, albeit slow, film. Before all the appreciation for film noir seemed to set in, I tended to batch all these crime melodramas together, even if a few lacked the stylishness of the classics.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I just read that Fox cancelled the release of Boomerang planned for the next Wave of Fox classics.
I remember happening the same thing when this title was going to be released in vhs.
I think there are some legal reasons behind all this. Here hoping that they will be cleared soon, cause this is an excellent movie and really needs to be out on dvd.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Allen Baron's Blast of Silence was released on DVD in Germany, Region 2. It's in English of course, also German.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Does anyone know if Fox plans to continue their Film Noir line after this year? Are there any more audio commentaries being done for forthcoming titles?

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Eddie Muller recorded a commentary for The Brasher Doubloon, but according to him, the film is in legal limbo right now.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I know the list haven't been updated in a long time, but here's another title to add - Richard Fleischer's Bodyguard is being released on July 5 from Manga Films in Spain. His melodrama Child of Divorce is scheduled to be released same day.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Hi Gregory.... thanks very much for all the updates - they are very much appreciated. I'm off for a stretch of time over the summer, so I will get the list cleaned up. I've got probably close to 200 other titles to add (mostly British crime/noir titles) as well.

BTW, I picked up Blast of Silence from Germany. The image is cropped from it's original 1.66:1 ratio, however, it is a vast improvement over the copy that is floating around within noir circles. It also has an Allen Baron commentary as well as the theatrical trailer. I also picked up The Clay Pigeon and Criminal Court as well from Spain, but haven't had a chance to check them out yet.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Finally.... the list is updated. I still have a number of non-released titles to add to the list but I believe all of the DVD releases have been listed. If I've missed any, please let me know. Any title scheduled to come out in the next month or so, I have simply listed as released - on the off chance of something being pulled, I can always go back and remove it.

While ordering Bodyguard from DVD-GO, I just noticed that Fleicher's Armored Car Robbery (1950) is also now available in Spain.... FYI.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

They should get Gregory Mank to do commentaries on both The Lodger and Hangover Square. He wrote 2 wonderful articles on making of these films for Video Watchdog back in 1993. And he already did some commentaries for Warner and Universal.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get Road House (1948), The Lodger (1944) and Hangover Square (1945) before the Fox Noir line comes to an end.
