Any Babylon 5 S2 reviews yet? - Page 4

Well I just finished going through all 6 discs yesterday. I noticed as people have said some grain,sometimes I felt like there was a white wash on the screen depending on the sceens. I found that the CGI was greatly improved over the first season.

I cannot wait to see season 3 and see if they will improve on it as well. I took out my VHS tapes of season 3 and started to watch them after finishing season 2 on DVD. Not the same quality of recording that is for sure.

Joseph, all good points, but just going back to the VHS & LD releases of B5, I think the major killer of those releases was due to the death of VHS and in case of LD, just too much of a niche format that also quickly met its demise due to the success of the DVD format.

As for the Mary Typer Moore Show, can't say I'm surprised by that. I mean, who's the target audience for that show anyway? How many of those people have DVD players? Exactly...

The B5 VHS and LD releases were primarily killed by a rumor that WB was working on a DVD release. But the point is that for both releases sales were initially strong, but that in a matter of months they tanked. In 1999 DVD was not overtaking VHS and LD that quickly, and to the degree it was it was doing so in cases where the same title was offered in all three formats, not in which there was no DVD release, only an internet rumor.

As for The Mary Tyler Moore Show - you could as well ask "Who is the target audience for M*A*S*H?" - which is doing very well on DVD. The fact is that for many years exactly the same people who watched MTM also watched M*A*S*H because both aired on CBS on the same night. So there is considerable overlap between their audiences. And plenty of us Mary fans do own DVD players, you know. We have all sorts of new-fangled gadgets the you young whippersnappers like to think are exclusively yours.

OK I watched the 1st three Eps. I think the quality is a little bit better. At least they looked that way on my my 30" Widescreen, the grain I'm sure would be more prevelent on my 65" set. One thing not mentioned here and I think WB deserves heaps of praise for this is the use of a "Play All" feature. Simply hitting play will play all the episodes in order on the disk. You can also chooses the episodes under the "Episode" button. This is a feature more studios should be adding to their TV product, especially half hour sitcoms. Watching these episodes agains reminds me just what a great show B5 Was. This show and the Sopranos are just such video "crack" you can go thru them so fast. I'm struggling to get thru my TNG Season 7 set with such winners Like "Dark Page" "Masks" "Genesis" "Subrosa" etc but the B5 set is racing by. Of course that's an unfair comparision between a series which was on it's way up and one that was winding down. I'll see if I feel the same way during those S5 Byron episodes .

Derek, your review contains one slight error - all B5 seasons (including S2) were 22 episodes, not 26.

FYI:

Babylon 5: The Complete Second Season, "The Coming of Shadows" makes it debut on Video Business magazine's Top 20 DVD Sellers list this week. (Survey covers the week ending Saturday May 4.) The list aggregates sales information from a number of leading vendors. You can also click and check individual lists from places like Amazon.com and Tower Records.

The set placed quite high on some lists and didn't make others at all, but sales overall were good enough for it to make the number 13 spot on the combined VB list. S1 never made the top 20 master list, although it did appear on some individual lists in lower positions, in some cases beating shows released at the same time like ST:TNG and X-Files. This time around only one other TV series made the Top 20, Mr. Bean of all things, despite a couple of them having sets released the week of the 4th.

I guess more than a few fans of the show were waiting to see if Warner Brothers would release subsequent seasons before making an investment.

I expect Season 3 to sell even better!

OK, I didn't know that. My bad, but considering that I didn't get into DVD until Xmas 2001, I wouldn't have known. I guess you can chalk that up and to why Paramount didn't finish the DS9 collection on VHS. I think they stopped at the end of S5 or so.

Well that's certaintly possible, but one other reason may be that M*A*S*H has a bit of military feel to it for obvious reasons while TMTMS was just a regular sit-com, no? and that why MASH is selling better is because of MASH's connection with military issues which would appeal to a much wider audience. To compare how is shows like Sanford & Son selling?

And to bring in my own purchasing habits, while putting aside my financial limitations, I simply wouldn't buy regular comedies beit today's shows, or shows of year's past. My purchasing style is based on genre, so I can see why TMTMS isn't selling well. Like for example, I am not buying any Friends sets because even though I watched the show in the beginning, I'm just not interested in watching it much less owning it now.
