D@## your moustache!

Has anyone heard this? Apparantly it is a very powerful insult in the Arab world. Seems silly.
you talkin to me?
Most of those insults seem silly. I mean, the obsession with footwear is almost absurd.

"He should be hit with a shoe!"

And someone said that the is the equivalent of the western "middle finger." Well, I see a lot of smiling people who are apparently also flippin' us off as we drive by them. So who knows?
Malcolm, the thumbs up was that way for them once, but it is widely believed that they adopted the western meaning and that is why they are using it.

I believe the phrase is ...

"I curse your mustache..."
And if it's near dinner time ended with
"....No soup for you!!!!"

No more silly than our silly insults.

Consider: "Yo mama"

"Your mother wears Army boots."

Interesting about that "thumbs up" thing about being equivalent to our middle finger. Especially if those two signals evolved from the same thing. Are there any women here that can verify this?

I don't think it's right to say the culture of other countries is "silly".

And I have no idea what the heck that's supposed to mean?

Sure it is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Everyone is entitled to express their opinions. I think the culture of many other countries is silly. I'm sure they think we're just as silly (and sometimes, I agree with them).

Cursing a moustache is extremely silly to us. Why can't we laugh about it? Because we might offend a few people? Forget that. If they can't see the humor in cursing a moustache, that's their problem, not mine. If someone from another culture wants to login here and say, "You Americans are so silly, calling people 'female dogs' as an insult! Hah Hah Hah!" .. I'd laugh right along with them, because they'd be right.

This world of "don't say what you're really thinking because someone somewhere will take offense" disgusts me.

What about "my ancestors spit on your haircut"? I've heard that one before.
In the UN a few weeks ago some of the Arab ambassadors got into a shouting match and one of them cursed the others mustache, I remember a few articles about how it was such a huge insult.

Also, what is the deal with hitting things with shoes? Is there extra meaning behind hitting a statue or picture with shoes or is it just the most convenient object available?
I read that the bottom of the shoe is in constant contact with all manner of foul things, so it's basically heaping dirt/schmutz/excrement on the object of scorn.

"So's your old man!"

Are you talkin' to my mustache? It's the only one here.

What about them whacky French with
Quote:
Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!

Now that's a pretty silly insult.

How dare you write such filth! I'm reporting you for THAT one!

(In my best impression of the wealthy lady on the Simpsons) "Why, I never!"

p.s. My father smells more of Boysenberry than anything else.

Yep, and I dislike that as well. But that has nothing to do with what I said. What I said, was that I don't think it's right to say the culture of another country is silly. I don't particularly care if I say something that might offend an individual, or a nation, but if I'm going to say it, I'll find out why it's the case first. Anyways, neither here nor there to have that discussion, as this is largely a joke filled thread.

I'm really beginning to like the shoe thing.
Could someone spoilerize what the hell "D@##" represents? For the life of me I can't figure it out. :b

I'd like to know to. I assumed it meant "Damn".

The deal with hitting things with shoes:
Quote:
The shoe equates the person with the dirt people step on
That's TOO funny.

I always thought in the arab world showing the palms of your hands was also an insult. Perhaps I'm misinformed?

I fart in your general direction!

I forget exactly, but there are some cultures that don't use toilet paper and extending your right hand to shake ones hand is considered an insult because that's the hand you...well, I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
Anyone who is able to look at North American culture objectively can see very clearly that it's just as "silly" as any other in its own ways.

not sure about the toilet paper bit, but IIRC in Malay culture, it's the other way around -- they use their left hand to deal with their business, so using the left hand to pass anything is considered rude.

in addition, after shaking hands (with the right of course), the right hand then goes immediately to the heart, which I understand is to signify that the greeting is a heart-felt one, or something like that.

interestingly, they also believe it's rude to point with an index finger as most of us would, so they point with somewhat lightly clenched fist with the thumb on top, using the thumb as the pointer.

Yeah, I wrote D@## as Damn but either the system or one of the moderators changed it.
I'm amazed that after they ripped-off the statues head that no-one bothered to shit down it's neck hole. I think that would be a fairly universal message.

Also.., In the middle-east, what do signs on stores say in place of "No shirt, No shoes?"
Yee-Ming is correct and far too modest (IIRC, indeed).

Exactly the same in my country. Even accepting anything with the left hand is rude.

I am a textbook example of that: I was born a leftie, but this tutor I had forced me to write with my right hand. So now, I am a rightie (is that word? don't care) with my hands, and a I play soccer with my left foot .

This happened unbeknown to my parents, they would have never condoned something so extreme and stupid - yes, it was stupid.

That's odd because I was taught that as a child, in an 'American Culture'
