S.W.A.T.:The First Season

Three-Disc DVD Collection Featuring All 13 Episodes
Available Exclusively on DVD June 3

Culver City, CA (April 2, 2003) - The hit TV cop show from the '70s that has
spawned the upcoming major motion picture release starring Samuel L. Jackson, Colin
Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez and LL Cool J, busts onto DVD for the first time in a special
re-mastered three-disc collection of S.W.A.T.: THE FIRST SEASON, featuring all 13
original episodes from one of the toughest, highly explosive crime-fighting police action
series ever. S.W.A.T.: THE FIRST SEASON will be available exclusively on DVD June 3
at the collectible price of $29.95 SRP from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment.

Starring TV legend Robert Urich (Spencer for Hire, Vega$) and executive
produced by Aaron Spelling (Charlie's Angels, Starsky and Hutch), S.W.A.T.'s
combination of cool cops and intense action made it a cult favorite and the genre-defining
series for all cop shows to come. Spun off from The Rookies and fueled by its signature hit
theme song, S.W.A.T. chronicled the realistic exploits of the Los Angeles Police
Department's Special Weapons and Tactics team, an elite group of five men who tackle
crime-control assignments too dangerous for even the police to handle. They are a team of
highly trained and heavily armed police officers whose purpose is to make coordinated
assaults on armed and dangerous criminals in sensitive situations and defensible locations.

After a convicted felon agrees to expose a crime syndicate's dirty laundry before a Senate

WOW!!! This brings back memories of that ass-kickin' theme song!
When I got this earlier, I was astounded to see that the "13th" episode (only 12 aired during the 1st season proper) was NOT the pilot from The Rookies third season, but instead was a second-season-aired episode that had been produced during the run of the first season.

In other words, this is being presented in production order rather than airdate order, and the season counts are off as a result.

Worse...no pilot.

Worse yet, they can't spell "Spenser."

Hah! I missed that!

I noticed no credit given to him for "Love Boat: The Next Wave"

Now Spenser and Vegas would make great dvd releases. But, I still am psyched to pick up SWAT.

EDIT: Duplicate post

Sweet!, but I'd really be doing cartwheels if news came out that Emergency! was coming. Any word on a possible release of Johhny Gage, Roy DeSoto and Dixie McCall on DVD?
Michael, there has been no new word on Emergency! since the pre-announcement last August.

I've just about given up hope on these...seven or eight months is a long time to go with no new word!

As for Universal, keep in mind the fact that their financial situation right now is pretty bad. That as much as anything could contribute to the disappearance of their "lost 8" TV shows.

That said, it would be sad to see the whole library withheld from DVD.
So, David, would you still recommend the set?
Man, I remember SWAT from 5th grade. K-Mart sold green plastic M-16 rifles for $.98, so we would buy them, and play SWAT in the field near our house.

Who else had the SWAT action figures and van????

What, based on JUST the fact that these are in production order instead of airdate order? Nah, that doesn't make a difference to me...I wouldn't own 40 Star Trek: TOS discs if that was a sticking point!

I expect these to have the same video compression issues that Columbia TV-to-DVD releases tend to have (Mad About You comes to mind). I doubt it would stop me from getting the first season. If it looked truly unwatchably awful, I'd think twice about subsequent seasons, of course. But video quality is still a TBD issue for this set.
Any reviews on this set?
I just saw this at Walmart for $22. Surely someone has this by now.
Just got the set and watched the 1st episode and was pleasantly surprised. I did not notice the feared compression problems that Columbia has had with many of their T.V. shows. The color was bright, alot more than I was expecting and the video was cleaner (less artifacts and grain) than Buffy, Xena and Babylon 5 on DVD which are all much newer shows. It still has that 70's look but I'm happy with the quality. No chapter stops, subtitles of extras but the price is low.

So I take it no luck for a Season 2 release? That is all that is left of the show... or is this as Dead As Police Woman ?

Even worse, they don't give Mark Shera any credit for making that show popular.

It's as dead as Sony is as a DVD company. I think they have more unfinished series than all of the other majors combined.
Unfortunately the first season of SWAT was tied into the movie release of SWAT with Samuel L. Jackson.
What a shame. SWAT season 2 is one of my top wished for releases.
yeah, it is sad they have not released the 2nd season, especially due to the fact that Vega$ was just release, which included Robert Ullrich.

I wanted the 2nd season, but, it is doubtful that it will ever be releases, because it has been 6-7 yrs since the first season came out.
They are missing alot of sales for S.W.A.T. season 2 but then again Sony has been clueless on TV DVD releases from the very beginning.
Any word as to why the pilot for this series was not included? Was Sony given orders not to? Or could Sony have included it all along but decided not to?

This is just a guess for the reason but  what is considered the pilot was an episode in the third season of "The Rookies" and at the time "The Rookies" wasn't out on dvd. They still haven't gotten to the third season from what I can tell.
Now to me "the pilot" was included on this set because they have the episode that showed how the team came together and how they became the team that we know. The pilot that was on "The Rookies" only had three of the team members.
When SWAT became available on the amazon downloads for a while they listed an episode they were calling the pilot and it had the description of that Rookies episode. However if you purchased it, you were given the episode "Coven of Killers" the second SWAT episode. I contacted them about it and they had to remove it since they were not able to get the actual pilot from the Rookies.  I just wanted to see it to see what it was like since people keep talking about it.
