Yeah, he's the only director since Hitchcock who can reliably draw crowds on his name (although he's probably declined a bit since his peak in 93). I think King Kong will go a long way toward determining how much pull Jackson's name has.

I'm not sure what Women think of Kong, but just speaking for myself, I might have to see this one on my own. My fiancee watched the original with me when I got the dvd and while she admired the film very much, and cried during the climax, she ultimately didn't have very much fun watching it. I think she's much more a fan of the happier Mighty Joe Young

I think I'm overloaded on reviews at this point. The general consensus has been established, the flaws pointed out, and now I just want to see this movie. Really badly.

Unfortunately I have a Final on Wednesday night and I'll need to study all day...we'll see if that happens.

Damn it, Peter Jackson, if my grade drops in Psychology I'm blaming you!

I would say Spielberg is in that category. Not every film of his has been a big hit, but neither was Hitchcock's.

Rotten Tomatoes is currently at 28 fresh reviews and 2 rotten ones with an average rating of 8/10. Pretty solid.

My theater isn't doing a midnight thing which is a bit annoying, I'll go to a matinee if they have one.

I'm so excited.

Also did you guys see the post in the software forum about the Kong DVD, it's coming out in April! This was during the software upgrade before it was reverted back so I don't know if anyone posted it again.

Definitely Spielberg. To a lesser extent, M. Night Shyamalan as well.

Oh, and of course Uwe Boll.

Spielberg and Hitchcock are probably the biggest "name" directors in Hollywood history. Both of their resumes are unmatched and are littered with classics. Both are rightly considered among the handful of true masters of cinema.

I think the biggest "name" directors in today's marketplace are Spielberg, Jackson, Cameron, and Shyamalan. Moviegoers trust these names (regardless of who is appearing in their films) to consistently put out good work (for the most part anyway).

If Jackson continues the way he's going, he could very well end up being considered among history's elite directors (joining cats like Hitchcock, Spielberg, Kubrick, Ford, Wilder, Capra, Scorsese, and Lean), but that's a whole other conversation.

The National Board of Review gave "King Kong" an outstanding achievement in special FX award. What's interesting is that this marks only the second time the NBR has given such an award to honor a film's visuals. The first time was back in 1997 when James Cameron received a special effects technology award for "Titanic".

I thought it was interesting that Rotten Tomatoes counted the New Yorker review as negative, and Metacritic counted it as positive. I'm assuming it was the same review they were talking about, as I didn't read it.

Anyone see the disturbing Burger King commercial spoofing King Kong, with an oversized Burger King in the role of King Kong looking inside an apartment and delivering a Kong-sized whopper through the window?

Yes, I seem to remember that thread. It got a bit (okay, waaay) off track for a while, but with some editing by the moderators, it is fine again.

That was based on the comments of the guys who filmed for the documentary to be SE content on the DVD itself, not "production diary" content.

Just got back from seeing Kong!!! Don't waste your money on Narnia (don't get me wrong, it was good) but King Kong is where the real adventure is. I didn't find it slow at any point, in fact, I was sad the adventure was over when the credits rolled. This film proves that it wasn't just the great source material that made LOTR so great; Peter Jackson is a film making genus. I just can't believe how he takes these stories and makes then so compelling, moving and exciting. This is early '90s Spielberg magic from Jackson here. He makes you believe that this really could happen. It is rare these days that a movie really transports you to another world and totally absorbs you in the story but, Jackson has done it 4 times in the last 5 years. I really can't find anything bad about King Kong, at least not after this first viewing. I've never been a huge Kong fan but this movie has floored me, almost in the same way FOTR did back in 2001. My one very minor gripe is that Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the big bug battle didn't feel as big as it could have coming after the amazing T-Rex vs Kong battle.
If Jackson keeps this pace up he will easily make it into the director hall of fame. I'll even go as far to say that King Kong is the best film I've seen this year so far. I think it deserves a Best Director and Picture nomination. Maybe that is a bit much but King Kong is a great movie. Length did not bother me a bit. I'm probably going to see it again tomorrow at midnight. Great, great, great! I've been blown away.

Chris, I'm so glad you loved it. I can hardly wait to see it myself, uber-Jackson fan that I am.
But as I've previously stated elsewhere, I don't think that, with the advent of DVD and home theater any movie ever again will hit the heights that Titanic did (and this from one who is NOT fond of that film.) That ROTK got even within spitting distance of it is awesome. I would think that, for the most part, the demographics for most popular movies is very aware that within 3-4 months or so you can own the movie you see in the theaters, and would regulate the number of times they go to see it accordingly.
