It's official -- Peter Jackson's next film: King Kong - Page 8

Don’t you feel like they are doing too much? They are revealing and showing things too much, too early!
This is off topic but PJ looks like he dropped at least 60lbs. I could only recognize him by his voice in some of those clips!

From Sci-Fi Wire...

Kong Spoilers Revealed

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The Kong is King.net Web site reported that Peter Jackson's upcoming King Kong remake will feature a giant spider creature excised from the original King Kong movie in 1933. The site also reported that Andy Serkis' character, the ship's cook Lumpy, will be an early victim of the creature.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Serkis will also provide the movements for the title giant ape, performing in a motion-capture suit as he did to create Gollum in Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The site reported that Serkis' suit will feature extended arms to give him a more "gorilla-like" appearance. Serkis will also have a microphone that goes through an audio processor to make him roar like a gorilla to give the other actors something to perform against, the site reported. King Kong is currently in production in New Zealand for a December 2005 release.

How is that second part a "Spoiler" Kachi? More like general technical information IMO.

There's an intriguing shot in the latest production diary (Day 127) on www.kongisking.net. Near the beginning, we see PJ posing for a picture next to a large prop of Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
a skull in the jungle. I'm no zoologist, but it looks sorta like an enormous ape skull. One of Kong's relatives?

P.S. I know it's a while until December, but I'm frankly dying to see some actual footage from this thing. Anyone know or care to speculate when we might see a teaser trailer?

I know it's a while until December, but I'm frankly dying to see some actual footage from this thing.

You know, because there have been so many remakes and sequels of this story, I'm actually not dying to see actual footage. Oh, I'm sure by December I'll be in line with rest of you, and I'm sure the film will be a terrific artistic and commercial success, but as far as general excitement goes, I'm not feeling it.

As i mentioned 15 months ago: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Think Jackson has more than one giant spider sequence up his sleeve?

I guess he does!

All made with fairly low budgets and primitive/cheap FX.

This Kong will be a living, breathing, rampaging giant ape the likes of which were never possible until recent FX developments.

I cannot wait.

I'm with you, Ernest. I'm actually looking much more forward to the DVD release of the 1933 original, which I suspect will still be the definitive Kong even after next December rolls around(not that I won't be seeing the new one, and enjoying it for what it is).

Well, yes, of course I am very eager to get the original on DVD, and it is classic that Jackson's cannot match, but really, more than any other film being released past May 19th, only two films have me very eager to head to the multi-plex: the Wallace & Gromit film and Jackson's version King Kong.
I'm a bit worried - it's April, and no official site, no teasers, nothing related to marketing at all. I've talked to quite a few non-movie geeks (but these are people who rent and go to the movies a lot) and this isn't even on their radar.

I was hoping for something during the Superbowl, but Universal seems to be dropping the ball WRT building anticipation with the greater movie-going audience, not to mention the online movie fan community.
Have you been to KongisKing.net, Michael? With the production diaries, one could say that Kong has the most significant web presence of any movie this year.

Yep, I've watched most (if not all)of the video production diaries.

But I was talking about "general" marketing, not quicktime movies sent to an unofficial fan site. Don't get me wrong - I'm loving the VPDs. I still can't get used to a thin PJ! But with no official Website, no teasers, no teaser poster...it seems odd that there's been no official marketing done, especially any efforts to start building anticipation among the moviegoers at large.
Well, for an "unoffical" fan site, KongIsKing is 100 times better than the official fans sites most movies get.

If you're waiting for a website with the film's trailers, screen savers, and desktop backgrounds, I guess I wouldn't be worried until early June. If Jackson hasn't prepped one good trailer before then, I would be scratching my head. I don't think launching an official site until at least one trailer is ready and "out there," is a big deal because KongIsKing.net is doing such a superior job.

i would say after the biggest summer films have been released would be a better time to start the hype machine for this- right now, since it is so far away(DEC!) from being relevant to the average moviegoer- it would just be white noise.
Sith, Batman, WOTW, and the others are just more immediate.
i expect around August we will start seeing a slowly escalating drumbeat of hype for it.

I agree. No worries on hype now. They will be able to ramp it up quickly for this one. Big name product, big name director, holiday release. You could TV ad this thing one week in prime time and probably blow it up into a major must-see.

Looks like we're getting our first Kong trailer in front of War of the Worlds.

Kachi Khatri-

For you first spoiler, I think it is fanboy speculation only, since there are a bunch of previewed SideShow/Weta statues for King Kong, and one clearly shows the demise of Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Lumpy
: he gets attacked by a Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
raptor
.

This movie's time on Skull Island is looking more and more like Jurassic Park with a giant gorilla and less like an island with fantasical, never-existed Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
giant spiders
.

And I'm with the two of you. If this project isn't done correctly it will be major cheese. An early script had been posted on the internet a while back. Now I understand the current shooting script is nothing like that early draft. I hope that is the case because that early draft came across to me like a typical cheesey modern action film.

This is extremely unfortunate. As a fan of the original, I want to see the original story, but done with today's film technology. The last thing I need to see is imitation Jurassic Park with Kong taking the place of the T-rex.

PJ himself has addressed this. His earlier draft was done pre-LotR, and was very much aimed at trying to please both the Suits and the audience (or the presumed audience's hot buttons). Once LotR was done, or at least nearly done and he had decided on Kong, PJ and Walsh and Boyens did a complete rewrite, bringing the lessons of LotR with them: take the story seriously, don't wink at the fantasy elements, and make sure character matters.

From what I have read (and I haven't read the earlier Kong draft myself), the earlier draft was more in line with The Mummy, only worse: an Indy Jones knockoff, with a lot of bad cheese.

I am concerned with how the actual story is going to be, but I've full confidence that the monsters are going to kick major ass.

Thanks for posting this Michael. This renews my faith in this remake.

Now, if only we could confirm that there are NO velociraptors..... !

SteveJKo,

Do you really want the inaccurate flesh-eating Apatosaurus from the 1933 original again?

The original film had a Tyrannosaurus Rex, Elasmosaurus-like dino, Pteranodon, Stegosaurus, (deleted giant spiders), and the aforementioned man-hungry Apatosaurus. That is pretty Jurassic Park-ish.

If, in prehistoric times, the Apatosaurus was an herbivore and wound not have eaten (or probably attacked the crew), what does Jackson put in its place at that point in the film?

The original Skull Island is a lot like Jurassic Park. (No small wonder consider the film is something of an homage to King Kong, particularly the part in The Lost World where Rex is let loose on the city.) I don’t see why having Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Velociraptor
in this new film would be contrary to the original vision of Skull Island, although, looking more closely at the updated sculpts, it looks like Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Lumpy
is attacked by a Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Venatosaurus
and not a Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Velociraptor
.

It also looks like we might see a few enlarged Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
insects
since one sculpt appears to show two characters struggling with a Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
centipede-like
creature.

I seriously doubt this film is going to spend more time on Skull Island than the original did, nor will any dino get the kind of star treatment Velociraptors received in the Jurassic Park films, but if it has dinosaurs, why should Jackson limit himself?

Heck, I even saw an early sculpt for this new film where Kong is battling two, not one Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Tyrannosaurus Rexes
. I say bring it on!
Mark's correct - from what I have read Kong battles Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
two or perhaps even three T-Rexes.

That should be seriously cool.

Great point. I really hope we don't have paleontological purists pissing and moaning about the dinosaurs being from a mix of eras.

It's King Kong - the epitome of big, ass-kicking monster movies. Enjoy the roaring and devestation and relax.

Or is Jurassic Park very King Kongish?

I wouldn't mind him at all actually. King Kong is fantasy, actually at this point it's been raised to the level of myth. In any case it sure isn't documentary. By the way, I believe it's in the book "The Making Of King Kong" that it's pointed out that we NEVER actually see the creature eat someone, it's biting people that we see. It was also said that an elephant is an herbivore, but is also a dangerous creature that may attack a human with no provocation.

In any case my main objection to Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
velociraptors attacking the crewmen
is that, besides being done to death in all three Jurassic Park films, it could change the atmosphere of the new Kong film to a JP rip off. I remember many objections made about new characters introduced to the Star Wars universe in Phantom Menace, some felt these characters looked more "Star Trekish" than Star Wars and that they IMMEDIATELY changed the tone of Phantom Menace, to it's detriment.

I actually look forward to the other creatures mentioned. They "feel" like they would inhabit the world of King Kong.

It's King Kong - the epitome of big, ass-kicking monster movies. Enjoy the roaring and devastation and relax.

Now you're talking. To this I hole heartedly agree!
