I hope he takes the time to do special editions of Heavenly Creatures and Frighteners. I don't mean Extended or anything just better discs with commentary and background material...I hear there is a great making-of bit that was on Frightener's Laser disc that hasn't seen the light of day on DVD.
That LD you mentioned has more than enough material to make a three disc SE set let alone a two disk SE. I mean the supplements are already in the can and ready to roll.....
Why the hell is Universal sitting on such an obvious marketing bonanza as a "From the Director of LORD OF THE RINGS" SE DVD of The Frighteners?

Because they're Universal, silly!

As of late I am beginning to agree with that sentiment...

No one but us clowns would buy that DVD!

Part of me hopes this is a whole new story and take on the original as I don't see what was so great with the original to warrant a new film. I understand being wowed as a child seeing the original but hopefully he has more to say on the story of King Kong. It would be great if he got all of us to cry when Kong makes his fall.

Oh dear god noooooooooo! THAT's exactly what Dino De Laurentis wanted HIS Kong to make us do and look how that Kongstrosity turned out.

I think the exactly quote was (with a thick accent) "When big monkey die, everybody cry!"

There seem to be 3 main reasons why PJ wants to do Kong.

1) It's his bestest, more favourite film of all time. The one that made him want to make movies.

2) He believes that we are living with the 1st generation of youngins who will not watch B&W films and so will miss out on it.

3) He wants to attempt to recreate for modern audiences the EXPERIENCE of what it must have been like for unprepared moviegoers to see Kong in 1933 and have their socks blown off!

Well, that what Kim's mom said and she knows this guy who met that movie person at that Con who told them that . . .

here is more from Phillipa Boyens about KK

Okay, firstly are you rewriting the whole thing from scratch?

PB: "Yeah. Well no. We're basing it on the 1933 version. He's definitely going to be a gorilla. We thought about changing him into a Kiwi but [laughs], it didn't work."

there is a lot more plus more about Lord of the Rings as well

I don’t understand the hostilities toward the 76 version. What’s wrong with it? Actually I think if PJ makes a remake it would be closer to the 76 version. I mean emotional and caring for Kong. I remember how PJ talked about the cave troll in FOTR. He said how he wanted to make him look sad and people be sorry for him. That’s why I think KK could be closer to the 76 remake.

Remember PJ saying how he imagines that the cave troll’s mother has probably made him hot milk and is waiting for him!

the onlything about the '76 version that still makes me wince is the relationship between Dwan and Kong.
the dialouge in those scenes is teeth grindingly bad.
that said, this is the harder aspect of the story to handle, imo.
what would a *real* reaction consist of?
if this were a real story, apart from catatonia or a heart attack, i can't envision how a real girl would react when being toted around by a 5 story tall ape.
constant screaming is somewhat more realistic, but as a dramatic quality, it becomes tedious and wearing fairly quickly.

on the other hand, i enjoy the way the '76 version deals with the absurdity of the situation.
this primordial sensation is quickly reduced to a cheesy marketing gimmick.
that's realistic. sad, but realistic.
the crass motives of the Wilson(denham) character,
the integrity and intelligence of the Prescott(Driscoll) character.
to me, those were big pluses of the remake.

jackson can go back and riff off of the '33 plot all he wants, but the audience thats going to be watching his film won't have the sensibilities of a 1933 depression era, pre WWII audience.
that's a big difference.

I was just channel surfing and E! just reported that Naomi Watts is "a done deal,"
as the female lead in this project.

Oscar mentioned this possibility a page or
two back.

I have no idea how much credibility to invest in E!,
because this channel just seems so sleazy and reinforces
every bad feeling I have about the leeches of Hollywood,
but I thought this was worthy to report.

Apparently this little tidbit came from Ted Casablanca
during his chats with celebs during the post-Golden Globes
parties.

We'll see....

a lot of other sources have been reporting that as well.

a few ays ago i found my copy of the earlier Jackson/Walsh script and read thru it a little bit.

the scenes between Ann and Kong seem to amount to a lot of fainting and then when he has her beack at the cave, it goes into a somewhat similar vibe as the '76 version where Kong brings her fruit, tends to her wounds, and they have a somewhat 'cute' conversational relationship-
not as cheesy as the '76 movie, but still somewhat suspect.
it seems like any remake will HAVE to make the creature a somewhat sympathetic, heroic figure as thats whats happened to him since he became an icon.

i think it would be more interesting if they actually go the other way and play against that 'built-in' feeling and make the creature more wild, more unpredictible, more violent.

Will Kong be called to the witness stand and testify with sign language???

Peter Jackson, who is directing a remake of King Kong, told The Hollywood Reporter that he will be using veterans of his Lord of the Rings movies on the crew, but that it's too soon to say whether any Rings actors will come aboard.

But as far as the crew, King Kong will feature Rings producers Jan Blenkin and Caro Cunningham, director of photography Andrew Lesnie, composer Howard Shore, production designer Grant Major and supervising art director Dan Hennah. In addition, both Weta Workshop, led by Richard Taylor, and Weta Digital have been at work on Kong for some months now, Jackson said. "We are talking to all other crew at the moment and imagine the majority will be LOTR veterans," he said.

So it should look and sound just as good as LOTR.

Ok I don’t get it. I heard reports saying that they will film it this year but yet again we hear that there is no script. When is the production phase?
I thought I'd heard they were going to start filming in August? That's plenty of time to get the script finished.

Jack Black on board for King Kong

I like this news and i'm glad to see him go for a different type of role.

Uh, no thanks.
I pictured Denham as older, thinner, and more refined but it is a rather interesting casting choice.
Jack Black??? You might as well have cast Adam Sandler.

Anyone notice the resemblance of PJ and JB? Big and ungroomed.
I'm not sure how I feel about that casting. I guess I'll just have to trust PJ that he knows what he's doing (which isn't hard after LOTR)...
This is an interesting choice. Could be inspired, could backfire.
I think it'll be inspired. Not typical, but I'd rather have JB as the showman than a pretty boy. He's got a lot of talent, and I think he'll flourish. PJ knows one thing, and that's casting!

Take care,
Chuck
At first, I have to admit, I didn't care for JB being cast as Denahm. But, JB can have a rather piercing stare, and having him use that the first time he sees Kong may work. But someone JB's age mounting an expedition to Skull Island seems a little far fetched. But like others, I trust PJ.

Jack Black as Carl Denham? God, I sure hope Peter Jackson sees something in him that I am missing...I am SO anxious about this after LOTR (and hoping this will make up for Dino DeL's fiasco!) that I don't want him to screw it up by playing it for laughs...it bombed the last time, it will do the same again!

It's official -- Peter Jackson's next film: King Kong

Just because it has Jack Black, doesn't mean they will be playing the film for laughs.
You have to remember too, that before Tenacious D Black was a trained stage actor. Just because he hasn't been getting these types of roles doesn't mean he isn't capable.

And he shares the basic physical profile of Robert Armstrong; short and chubby.

I think this has the potential to be great. Casting Black has really gotten me interested in the film.

We're watching the '33 version in my Fantasy Lit. class. It's going over surprisingly well. The subtext is very modern; for instance when Denham literally grabs her from the streets and proposes the job offer, she's worried that he wants to use her as a prostitute. I think a period era retelling could work.
There are a lot of movies in his IMDB listing that I don't recognize, but of those I do recognize, nothing seems to suggest that Jack Black is right for this role. That is, unless Denham will also play wacky rock-n-roll vignettes between forest excursions.

I hope I'm wrong, but this doesn't bode well, IMO.

Given their success with LOTR casting, I'm not going to get too fired up over their KK casting until I see the film.
