The Simpsons S3 - When?

Just wondering if there is any word on this. I guess there is virtually no chance of a May Release at this point, huh?

Gord isn't the type to post rumors, so I assume this news item wasn't "heard" from "just anybody".

In the UK see Choices Direct (listing a 28/07/03 release date)

11 months apart seems to be the pattern:

S1 - September 2001
S2 - August 2002
S3 - July 2003? (according to that rumour)

That is actually closer to a year when you look at the days of those months. I will be expecting this one sometime in October

Why are they taking so long with the Simpsons releases?
Seriously. I like having special features and all, but with 13 seasons of this show unreleased, at this rate standard DVD will be long since dead by the time the whole series is finally out. If Star Trek fans can get all of TNG in a single year, why can't we Simpson's fans get the series' entire run in 5 years? I think that's a reasonable amount of time, though even that would be too long for my liking. Would anyone really complain if we ditched the audio commentaries to get the discs out in something resembling a timely manner?

Obviously, if Fox wants the participation of Matt Groening and Al Jean, DVD production is going to be slow because of their commitment to the show as it is. I like the commentaries, but I do wish they could maybe record a few seasons worth at a time (depending on how long it actually does take) or maybe can can do commentary on every other episode. I would take that compromise if it would get the sets out faster
post #9 of 32
Part of the delay is probably because they are releasing Futurama too, and I thought I read that Matt was recording commentary on that as well, but there are less Futurama seasons so when it is done, they should be able to ramp up Simpsons (hopefully, although I'm glad to have Futurama too =p).

Actually, considering how reasonably priced the simpsons were compared to a lot of DVD-TV product, it's about one of the only ones where massive releases wouldn't hurt my budget, so I agree, churn em out!
I doubt it's because they're busy with the Futurama sets. The first two seasons have been out in region 2 for ages and the region 1 release appears to be pretty much identical, so it's not like they require a lot of time to work on them these days.

They already have. The hold up, whatever it is, isn't because of the commentaries.

2-3 seasons released each year would be more reasonable. One every 11 months is insane. Fortunately I don't care about reaching season 13 (or 14, or whatever the hell they are up to now.) The series has sucked for the last 4-5 seasons.

Actually, there seems to be a bit of uncertainty about that. USA Today reported around the time of the 300th episode that commentaries were still being recorded for S3

I don't think I would go that far

Matt Groening specifically said in a recent interview that what's holding the DVDs up is that his insistence on recording commentaries for every episode.

I don't mind slow releases as long as there's commentary on every episode. I mean, they show 4 Simpson episodes every day on tv so I'm more concerned with 'extras' on the DVD releases rather than trying to get my "fill" of episodes.

Well at least Groening is adamant about participating in the season sets.

I wish the would come out faster though. Fox does not show episodes from the first few seasons much anymore and some episodes are so badly butchered in syndication that I sometimes get angry watching
post #18 of 32
True, they do show Simpsons reruns all the time, but it seems like they are almost always from 1998 and later these days. In my opinion, these are the weakest episodes of the Simpsons, and I would really like to see more of the stuff that aired in the early 90s. Some commentaries would be nice, but I really don't want one for every episode. Maybe just for the 5 best episodes of the season. With 300+ episodes, how much can Groening really have to say that will be interesting, informative, and original for each?

The long wait for the Simpsons DVD's is a pain. The Simpsons is one of my favorite TV shows. I currently own Simpsons Season 1 & Season 2 (I purchased Season 1 & Season 2 in August 2002. I also watched these 2 seasons in August 2002). It brought back memories because I haven't seen the episodes in years (I was only 12 years old when the first Simpson episode aired in Dec 1989). I really wish that FOX, etc would release 2+ seasons per year.

Really? I heard rumors last year on the Internet which stated that commentaries for the Simpsons were recorded up to Season 5.

I think part of the problem is the syndication schedule.
I haven't seen a good Season 3-10 episode on for awhile. I don't know who controls what's syndicated, but man... I've been dying to see the softball episode from S3...

I haven't seen any reruns of the early seasons of The Simpsons on TV in years.

Well, someone made a very good point about the Simpsons on a newsgroup. You can read the posts at http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...0mb-cg.aol.com

The persons newsgroup post said this (excerpt):

It's hard for the staff of The Simpsons to record commentary tracks on top of
the regular work they have to do for new episodes of the show.

I think Matt's interview regarding the commentaries was rather tongue in cheek - I wouldn't take it that seriously regarding the delays.

Most of the evidence seems to suggest the season 1-3 commentaries were all recorded at the same time. That doesn't stop new commentaries being recorded though, and perhaps USA Today heard about commentaries being recorded and assumed they were for Season 3 as it was next to street.

Personally I think the delays are for music clearance rights. The Simpsons makes use of lots of popular, well known music. If Fox state Ally McBeal will never be released in the USA due to music clearance issues, I can see the rights on the Simpsons releases being just as big a nightmare... if not more! And it's better to have the episodes released with the original music tracks, than cheap subsitutions. Fox know the Simpsons sets sell, so I'm sure they're doing their best to get a good product out as quickly as possible.

You will notice the Futurama sets are coming out at a faster rate (in the rest of the world anyway) and I put this down to being newer, most of the secondary rights issues would have been included in the original contracts. If this is so, hopefully some of the newer later seasons or the Simpsons will be the same, and turnaround on the season sets will be much quicker.

Piss on commentaries - just give me the season box sets.

I want up through Season 8, after that I couldn't care less. Season 9 was when I went from being in love with the Simpsons to really angry at how sucky the show became. I watched the rest of Season 9 before I gave up, just to give it a chance to get better. Since then I have watched several episode from Season 10 onwards, and have hated every one without fail. I am looking forward to getting the next six seasons on DVD though.

I know that the Simpsons aren't as good as what they used to be, but I still love the show. Sub-Par Simpsons is better that no Simpsons in my book. I still get at least one or 2 good laughs from every episode. And even a not very good episode is still much better than most other shows

Is there a link to this interview somewhere?

We're talkin' softball
from Maine to San Diego,
we're talkin' softball,
Mattingly and Canseco,
Ken Griffey's grotesquely swollen jaw,
Steve Sax and his run-in with the law,
we're talkin' Homer,
Ozzie and the Straw

Classic episode!

This is from a thread of DVDTalk: Here

Here is a quote by Matt Groening from an article about TV shows on DVD in yesterday's L.A. Times:

Another speed bump has been the process of providing special features, a key selling point for DVDs.

"We're doing audio commentaries for every episode, much to the chagrin of Fox Home Video," said Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons." "They want us to put this show out much faster than we're able to crank out these audio commentaries."

Although things are going much faster these days, Groening joked, "we've run out of things to say, and we're just like whistling and doing little songs and stuff."

I see the whole of his comments being somewhat "tounge-in-cheek" - plus the fact that he as stated many times (even before season 1 was released) that the commentary has been done for seasons 1-2 I can't see a 24 month wait to do the season 3 commentary (you'll notice the same joke appears in this article - all the way back to 2001. I'm not sure of the date, but the article makes clear the interview took place substantially before the page was published.)

Quote:
MG: We're doing both DVD sets of Simpsons and Futurama. Virtually everybody on this panel worked on audio commentaries for Futurama. We did audio commentaries for every episode. And it was a little easier on Futurama. We haven't run out of things to say about Futurama. The Simpsons, on the other hand, we have 280 or so episodes. And we've finished the audio commentaries for the second season now, and basically we're just, you know, whistling and stuff, because we've run out of things to say.

The Simpsons DVD…. In addition to the first 13 episodes, it has some scene excerpts from the very first episode of The Simpsons, which almost killed the show because it was so bad. And the great thing about that is the audio commentary, because you'll here the producers screaming, basically, while they watch this. There's no screaming on the Futurama audio commentary, which should be out around Christmas or January.

James I agree with you on the music rights issue. It's been my suspicion all along. Especially from Season 3 onward they used more and more popular songs.
