DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases - Page 34

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Thanks Mike! I looked around the second vendor a bit and not only is there a smaller minimum and a smaller per-unit cost (ok, so it's 25 and 51 cents respectively, but still), they offer free shipping too. They're not exactly the same, but they serve the same purpose and with the shipping being a difference of 8 bucks, I'm definitely gonna go with those. Thanks again!

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I'll just start typing and if anyone knows what I'm writing about, maybe you can help me out.

When I picked up those James Bond Ultimate Collection Sets, each film came packaged in a very nice two-disc, slim case - except for two titles. These two titles (On Her Majesty's Secret Service & Goldeneye for me) came a in notably cheaper type of case. It was flimsier and the spindles didn't hold the disc at all. They also had a stench of wet plastic. A few months later, I purchased the slim case re-release of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and curiously enough Season 7 came in these same cheap 2-disc slim cases.

So my question is, does anyone know where I can find the "good" 2-disc slim cases to match the other ones? I tried ordering these, but they turned out to be of the cheaper variety, only they seem to have improved the hub mechanism a little. The smell is still there though.

But I'm still curious if anyone knows where to pick up the better kind.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Ray, thats the million dollar question. I dont think you can get those exact cases now. But get rid of the ones that stink, and fast! I would bet they are the Scanavio slim cases that leave a "fungus" like residue on your discs. I know we had a thread on the subject not long ago.

Huh. I'll keep that in mind.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I looked into the matter, but I'm not sure if the cases I'm having an issue with are from Scanavo. They are unbranded and I don't think they feel "oily" as described in that thread you linked to. Since I paid more for the James Bond sets and frankly, the last two seasons of Buffy weren't that good, I switched some of the "good" cases from the Buffy S6 set with the shoddy ones from the JB sets. I noticed that one of the Buffy slim cases was indeed branded "Scanavo" and was a little different from the "good cases" but still seemed to be of a higher quality to the cruddy ones I described, but if the issues are true, I'll need to look into the matter a bit more.

Still, I don't know what the shitty cases I have are. Nor do I know if they cause an issue. While the ones that I purchased seemed to fix the hub, they still smell bad enough that I typically consider airing them out.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

FWIW, I received, today, an order that I had placed with Sleeve City.com. The order came beautifully packaged. It was a small order of a hodge-podge of different items--some single-disc Blu-ray cases, Super Jewel cases (think DVD-As) and some plastic sleeves. Nothing slim in this order (I have plenty on-hand right now) but they DO carry slim single and double DVD cases.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I might be WAY behind the times on this issue...but I have finally seen some VERY slim Blu-ray cases.

I picked up, tonight, a copy of the Essential Holiday Film Collection at my local BJs Wholesale Club (Elf, A Christmas Story, Nat'l Lamppon's Christmas Vacation, The Polar Express). The four films were housed in four extremely thin Blu cases.

I only saw their spines (titles VERY easy to read), but I would like to think they are functional as well as space-saving.

Mike, The Matrix , Blu-ray, set also comes in these cases. They are sweet for box sets, unlike the Bond Blu-ray boxes.
If not for the fact they hold Blu-rays i cant say i would like them. DVDs would get scratched, cause the disc seems to touch the case. But its not a problem for Blu discs.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

It seems I'm having a problem with my slim cases also.

About 18 months ago I converted everything over to slim using Memorex brand cases (They where on sale at Radio Shack at the time for $4.99 for 25 cases).

I've already pulled about 16 discs out of the cases because of a milky/oily looking discoloration on the DVD playing surface. And I've only checked 1 shelf. I have 8 more to go with about 75-80 cases on each one. This really has me upset.

The discs seem to clean up easily with soap and water, but a few discs still have some of the residue left.

Thankfully I have a few 96 disc binders left and have begun storing the problem discs in them until I can resolve this issue.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Does anyone happen to know if any of the cover sites out there have any custom covers for the Blu-ray version of Band of Brothers? I'm hoping to take mine out of their metal case and put the six discs into three double Blu cases.

I seem to remember that custom covers were all the rage for the SD Band of Brothers set...but I haven't been able to find any yet for the BD version.

Maybe I'll have to take some initiative!

I second Mike. You make em, and i will be glad to use them!

Having seen the recent referral to this thread by Mike, I thought I'd post a quick note to say that my past comments disparaging DiscSox use of vinyl are no longer valid -- that company has made an active effort to switch their products to pure polypropylene.

I'm actually looking at their "HiDef Pro Sleeves" for my BluRays now (because I do not want to use binders for my BluRays, though binders were perfect for my DVDs).

http://www.mmdesign.com/products/hidef-pro-poly-sleeve.php

(note these are for BluRays only -- they're shorter than DVDs).

I have, however, written to DiscSox asking them if they'll make a top-loading version, since their current design is side-loading -- which means that they're only useful if you stand them upright, as on a shelf. But I put my movies spine-up in boxes, so the discs would unfortunately fall out of the current version of the "HiDef Pro Sleeves".

I also wrote to one of their competitors, pointing out DiscSox's oversight and inviting them to make a similar product more to my liking.

Thinner DVD Packaging Coming

In the apparent belief that consumers will buy more movies on DVD if they take up less space on their shelves, Sony Disc Manufacturing said that it has begun using Nexpak's Thinpak DVD cases, which are about half the width of conventional cases, for two Image Entertainment releases. The company said that it expects other DVD producers to follow suit. The thinner cases will also allow video stores to stock more product. Moreover, Shelli Kaiser, director of marketing for Nexpak, told Video Store magazine that the Thinpak cases can be automatically packed by machine, eliminating the current cost of hand packing. "It saves money ... and it speeds the time to market," she said.

I was unaware DVDs were ever packed by hand. Interesting. I guess that might explain why so many brand new discs were scratched (often badly) in the early days.

...and fingerprints.  That was a dead giveaway that the human element was in play.

Nice quote, Matt, from the OP in a nearly seven year old thread!

Re: the fingerprint issue.  I always thought it would be cool to get the CSI lab teams on the case and find out who is personally responsible for soiling our newly purchased discs...
You know, on all the discs I've bought over the years, I've never gotten even one with a fingerprint. Scratches were the only indication, but I suppose I attributed that to misaligned machinery. Thankfully, this period coincided with a time when retailers were more flexible about returns and exchanges.

But yeah, call in CSI!

Uh oh. I knew it was just a matter of time.

I wonder if I should start now?!?

Slim Blu-ray single cases at squaredealonline.com.

A couple of questions.

I am now in the market to buy some slim Blu-ray cases.  I might order from the link in my last post.  Has anyone ever ordered from them?  Or, do you know of other e-tailers who are now stocking slim blu cases?

And, do you know of anywhere which might be stocking two-disc blu slim cases?

=====

I've purchased a bunch of used blus at the Blockbuster sales and figured if I'm going to buy blu cases to put them in (they all come in DVD cases from Blockbuster), I might as well go "slim."

As far as slim 1-disc blu cases, I've also found these.  I've ordered from Shop4Tech before with excellent results.

But I still can't find 2-disc slim blus.  Maybe they don't make them?

I bought a 10-pack of Triple Blu-Ray cases from Sleeve City for $8.69 (shipping $8.50 - total $17.19). They are the same width as a normal Blu-Ray case. There is a spindle on the inside front, inside back and a swinging piece with a spindle. I think the price goes down the more you buy. So, while they are not 'slim', at least they are same width as a normal single.

I initially bought them to take the single disc Wizard of Oz BR and add the two 'extra' DVDs from the DVD set. I did the same with Gone With The Wind (bought the single disc BR, and moved over the two extra discs from the box-set).

Since the swinging piece is easily removable, it also functions as a two-disc case (I did that for Maltese Falcon - one side BR, other for DVD with other versions).

I do not see a manufacturer on the cases. Also, since there is a spindle on the front inside, it is not ideal for holding a booklet (although the clips are there).

Hope this helps.

I just bought the Ten Commandments box 'o stuff and the tablet storage device is the worst I've ever encountered. I've either got to move the 3 blu's to a 3 disk blu-ray case or all 6 discs (3 dvds) to a case that holds 6. Or I could use 2 3 disc cases or I could not give a rats ass about the dvds. I haven't decided yet..

Can anyone recommend a good 6 disc case or a 3 disc case? I see the previous poster is mentioning a disc case.

BTW, anyone come up with custom art for the Ten Commandments?
