DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases - Page 33

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Hey guys,
I'm making custom Star Wars dvd cases, and here is what I need:

Star Wars: a New Hope-translucent blue standard dvd case.

The Empire Strikes Back-translucent red standard dvd case.

Return of the Jedi-translucent green standard dvd case.

Along with the custom covers(original poster art) I think mine will look far better than what I have now.

The problem is I can't find translucent standard dvd cases anywhere(seen a ton of slim cases though) and I'm wondering if any of you know a place online to buy them?

Sam: Now you're just showin' off!

Bryan: Cannot think of anywhere, but they must exist. I know www.shop4tech.com has some solid colors (not translucent) but you also have to buy 25 at a clip, I think. If I come up with something better I'll let you know. Do you want single disc or double disc?

Single is perfect. Thanks!

Excellent work, Steve. Nice find!

Maybe pink can substitute for red?

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I looked at that website again for the transparent colored dvd cases. Looks like it is a distribution company in China and the minimum order is a 40 foot container. That would hold a lot of Star Wars DVDs.

I looked for them elsewhere but I couldn't find any. Sorry.

Hmm, 160k cases in a container. And I thought people here were trying to reduce the amount of shelf space they needed .

That's ok. I'll keep looking. with all the companies that sell dvd cases, I'm sure they will turn up sooner, or later.

But only because collections are getting so big, Gary! I think RAF (and others) has about 160k titles in his HT room!

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

My favorite DVD binder company that I've used to hold my DVDs, UniKeep, sold itself to another company -- the similarly named Univenture -- a couple months ago. This worries me a little bit, however, the press release says that "The company will continue as a wholly owned subsidiary of Univenture, Inc." and just to make things weird, the CEO of Univenture is the same person who owned UniKeep. So it seems UniKeep did not go far. The press release calls it "an acquisition that is designed to build growth of the company and its brands."

So hopefully they'll still make the DVD binders I use. I'm in email contact with them but they haven't given me a direct answer yet. If not, I figure I'll wrap up my DVD collection with them, and then find something else for BluRay once I move on to BluRay.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

How many binders are you up to now, Will?

I have fallen drastically behind with my ThinPak conversions. I have fallen behind in many other things in my life, too!

That's too bad about the binder company. I guess your options are as you state them: wait and see if they are still going to be available...or buy up a whole bunch now--like a hoarder. But I think your choice makes a whole lot more sense.

My big project has GOT to be shrinking down my Disney Treasures. That would save me a WHOLE LOT of shelf space. Disney must be one of the last companies still using those darn double-wide cases.

Sam: If you check back in here...are those standard CD jewel cases you are using for your Blu-ray discs? If so, do you find them to be all that much slimmer than the standard Blu-ray cases?

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Yeah, I've got to make time to cart all my snappers to Staples and do some reduction colour copies. Not easy when I started a new job last year.

13 binders for the movies (80 capacity each). The letters have turned out this way: A, B, C, D-E, F-G, H-J, K-L, M-N, O-R, S-S, S-S (2nd), T-U, V-Z.

TV series (and music videos, and Cirque du Soleil discs) have required 11 more of those binders (with multiple shows within each), and 11 more of the smaller 1" binders (for individual shows that lasted several seasons and can therefore take a smaller binder entirely of their own).

About 51 inches of shelf space, total.

I am renting more than buying now, though. So the collection is not growing much any more.

Plus my philosophy has changed from "get every movie I might want to watch more than once!" to "get only those movies that reflect a part of my own interests".

At least they are colorful.

Unless, of course, you think grey (or is it a dull silver) is "colorful!"

Stephen...just a word of warning. Many Staples (and other copy centers) won't allow copies of copyrighted materials.

Sometimes they'll look the other way...sometimes they won't. It's a real YMMV situation. Just don't be surprised.

I scanned all my snappers (they're real easy to take apart) and brought a CD to the store and made the copies myself at their self-serve color copiers. One staffer was a little uneasy but I gave a full explanation that I was simply shrinking the covers to put the discs into smaller spaces and I was allowed to continue.

I may do that with a thumb drive. I've got a 2 gig one that should be more than adequate.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Ok. Here is a question to those of us that have any Blu-ray or HD-DVD titles in our collections. Are any of you converting the HDM cases over to thin pak cases?

I've done a few so far and would like some feed back.

One thing I like is the insert fits into the slimcase without any trimming. But you are left with some room at the top.

Here are a few photos of my conversion of Behind Enemy Lines.

1st is what it looks like.

2nd is the view on the shelf, it's on the right at the end.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I keep mine in Blu-ray cases, they are slim enough. But OCD me likes them to all be the same kind of cases. So i order Blu-ray cases from Sleeve City. They are out right now, unfortunately.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Sam... I had to laugh at your "shunk" sized cases which are actually CD jewel cases. It is what DVDs first came out in 1997 (the first titles). And it is like the old DIVX cases from Circuit City rental on demand days.

I like the slim cases since studios got away from the booklet inserts and surprised that the Cult Classics box sets from Warner didn't come that way but instead in full size cases.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

i really wish that the studios would use these a little more, works well for the signature series fro WB, wonder if the upcoming re-releases of Gangsters will follow the same thinking, also for continuing series like the chans fro fox this would be optimal, shelf space becomes a concern.

And that, Dana, is the very raison d'etre of this thread. My entire collection is now housed in slim cases...making it possible for me to have twice as many titles on my limited shelf space.

That's not to say I'm still fighting a losing battle of shelf space vs. growing collection. And, I am a few months behind in converting my new purchases...but the thinner cases just make more sense for a whole slew of reasons

Joe: I wasn't planning on swapping my BD discs into ThinPaks because I didn't think it would really make that much of a difference. Maybe I'll have to get the ruler out, though.

It looks like you are using the slightly bigger Thins for your titles with wider lettering on the spine, eh (the Batman titles, Beauty & the Beast SE, etc.)?!

Mike,

I've abandoned the idea of converting the BD or HD cases.

I use the slightly thicker cases for my 2-disc sets.

Heck, I don't even know if I'll be mixing them in with the DVDs yet! Mine are in a wicker basket all by their lonesome selfs.

That sounds like a thread waiting to happen. They always seem to be very popular. Maybe I'll go give it a try!

I got some of them originally and have them mixed in...but I use the Thin double-cases now that are the same size as the singles you are using. I think I've been getting them at Staples.

Just reporting that I saw Verbatim Trim Cases (100 pack) at my local BJs Warehouse Club tonight for $24.99. They were black...but looked pretty nice.

Here's what a case of 25 looks like from the Verbatim site:

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Does anyone know what the cheapest place (online or B&M) to pick up a small amount of clear double slims? I know you can't really buy them individually but I just picked up a set with a busted hub from an indie record store that didn't have any other copies to exchange it for and it was too good a price to get a refund on.

Anthony:

Come to think of it, I used to get mine at CompUSA--which has since shut down its local stores (and most stores, I think, across the US--except in FL). So I don't know what I'll do when trying to get some slim doubles. Probably some online vendor.

Anyway, I found these at tapeandmedia.com. But, there's a minimum order of 26. (but they're only $.52 apiece. Not bad.).

And, shop4tech.com has a number of different options to choose from.
