Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

But unlike the website photo, these are interlocking hubs. I don't love the 'clip' style spokes though (my photo, 26k):

Interesting, Tim. I'm amazed that the discs aren't even off-set.

Ray: Sorry I can't be of more help right now...but there's TONS of info within this thread on how to do the converting, scanning, etc. Myself, I advocate the "trim the original artwork" method. There are lots of pictures of different people's results, too.

I'm figuring I'll keep the original slipcovers, snap sleeves and the like in those clear binder sleeves. I'll browse through the thread to see how to do the option I'm wanting to do. Gonna do the scanning and converting to thins. I have enough space for the double-slim amarays but not enough for the singles. I'm also going to convert all the snapcases I have too.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I found the perfect site to download covers of the singles that I'm going to convert. All I need now is Photoshop, a thinpak template and I'm set!

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

When I converted regular amrays to thinpaks, I trimmed the art, 1/8" off each side.

When I converted snappers to thinpaks, I made a two-sided color xerox of the cover art, at 90% reduction, and then trimmed the pages to fit.

No scanning, or Photoshop necessary.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

What exactly are the new Fox TV series cases called and where can i get them ?

You know, those clear slim doubles used for 24 Season 5, Boston Legal, Mission: Impossible season 1 etc.

The hub is similar to the one from a regular CD Jewel Case and the two sides interlock together when you close the case.

I've been thinking of getting some more for my other TV series but i want to be sure to get THAT kind of slim cases...

I think my DVD collection just got thinner!

Ditto, been looking high and low for these double slims. All i can find are the slightly fatter ones!

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Finally, i ended up going with the Staples/Business Depot cases, not exacly the same thing but close enough. They are the same width (7mm) and do the job well enough.

I found black ones at Future Shop, if that helps.

I've exclusively used the slim clear doubles from Staples...but those disc hubs are off-set.

THESE from Uline may be what you are looking for.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

By the way, for anyone interested in clear single thin cases, I just got 125 from my nearest Radio Shack, which is selling a set of 25 for $5.99.

I'm in NYC.

Dee: THAT IS a great price! Must be nationwide. I'm on my way!

Thanks so much for posting!

**EDIT: BTW, that sale expires 2-10-2007.

Excellent timing. Thanks DeeF!

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

A few odds and ends re: slim DVD cases:

My local Target has added slim DVD cases to its shelves. They are marketed under TDK's name. They seem to be stocking black only (unfortunately) and come in a package of 10 for $6.xx

Thanks again to DeeF for posting about that Radio Shack sale. I was able to pick up 6 packages at that price! I'll wish I had picked up more when I use those all up...but maybe they'll run the sale again. It's also just good to know that Radio Shack is carrying those 25-packs of Memorex clear slims for just $9.99 (regular price). I've paid twice that (impulse buy) at places like Staples.

I also just railed against the flimsy slim cases used in the St. Elsewhere: Season 1 set over in a thread in Software/TV. They are just about the worst excuses for cases I have ever seen. Every time I pop one of those cases open to take out a disc, one (or both) of the flippers in the case pop off their hubs and start floating around. They are the loosest hubs I have ever seen. They have no "bite" to them whatsoever! I don't know who the manufacturer is, but using those particular cases (especially with flippers) is a crime.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I notice Big Lots has some generic slims (black too) for about the same price as the Targets.

I managed to snag 3 packs from Radio Shack. But I have to admit, my main interest in slim cases has become taking two-disc sets that come in separate keepcases and combining them into a single slim-double. The payoff is unmistakable. Simply swapping single discs into slim singles doesn't quite give the same level of satisfaction for me yet!

Just wait...as your collection grows, Douglas!

Thanks for the info on Big Lots. I may have to check out mine. I usually avoid my local store. It's kinda disorganized and grubby.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Just want to point out that Radio Shack is still carrying those 25-pack of Memorex slim clear singles for $9.99. The same product at Staples is $19.99! And $10.99 at CompUSA.

Double slims at Staples are $15.98 for a pkg. of 20.

Meanwhile, at CompUSA, you can get 25 slim clear CompUSA brand) for $7.98, 50 slim clear for $16.99 (does THAT make sense?) or 200 for $39.99. Great deal!

I know there are better prices available on-line...especially in bulk. But, for some reason, I tend to pick up cases as I need them when I am near these types of stores.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I was facing a space crisis in terms of DVD storage. When I got the Errol Flynn Vol. 2 set, I was sold on the idea of the thinpacks. I've been picking them up from Fry's for about $7.99, for 50. I also picked up a bunch of their slim double disc cases. I've gone from having no room whatsoever to having 2 empty shelves on one of my racks. However, I still have done nothing about the snappers yet.

I wish I had gotten some of the cheaper ones others have found, but I am almost finished now.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

Read back through this thread, David, and you'll find all kinds of tips on what to do about snappers. PITA...but worth it.

I've picked up a few over the last coupla years that I've got to go back and convert.

You better stock up at that price!

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I'd like to avoid reading this entire thread, if possible. Are there any sites offering free printable cover art for the slimpacks?

Johnny: Hope this helps.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

That does help, but so far I'm just finding scanned art that is not thinpack ready. Does someone have a photoshop template for the thinpacks? I got mine at Radio Shack.

Gotcha. There is a company, NexPak, that sells slim cases.

They posted this .pdf file of a template.

I may have a different one on my home computer. I will check tonight (or this weekend) and let you know.

Re: DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases

I would appreciate you checking on your pc. The one you linked to doesn't make sense. When I open it in PS it measures less than 10" wide and the spine is about an inch. Doesn't make sense for a thinpack.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong in PS, but haven't figured it out yet.

I'm sure I've got one. Just not sure if it's different from that one. You might check around on the site to see if there's something different available. Maybe I directed you to an incorrect template.

Anyone...I'll let you know about the other one. Glad to help.

It doesn't make sense opened in PS as is because it is for reference only. The PDF states at the top "NOTICE: Insert Not To Scale." It is simply a guide outlining all the measurments so you can lay out your own template in whatever image editing or page layout program you prefer to use.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
