well, that was too cool for school. my package (heh..i said 'package') arrived and within two hours i had cut 50 of my dvd's. talk about great! i'm officially hooked.

now i need to order me some double-slims so i can take care of those.

the only ones i haven't hacked are my collector/box-sets. i figure since the dvd cases are designed to fit in the box just so...i'd better leave those alone.

i cleared out almost an entire shelf's worth of space. awesome.

my only casualty was my import of shaolin soccer. i didn't realize until it was too late that the actual case and sleeve are bigger then normal. i would have had to hack off *way* too much of the sleeve to make it fit in the slim-case ... but i had already hacked off too much to make it attractive in the original case. grrrr!

Ted: I've had a couple of instances where I didn't think the cover looked quite right in the slim single...so I simply used a slim double--which gives you a lot more room on the spine--and simply didn't put a second disc on the extra spindle. I hope you'll find this works when you order your doubles.

thx for the tip mike!

btw, how are you all handling the insert with the double-slims? the ones i'm looking at don't seem to have a spot for them?

if you have a recommended place to order these, lemme know. ordering a 50-pack from ebay will cost me about 30 bucks.
Ted:

In January, I ordered 52 slim doubles from Tapeandmedia.com
for $.52 each. Total $27.04 Great service.

I order the clear cases...
...and put the inserts behind the covers so that they show through behind the discs. I do the same with the singles.
Here's an example from my pictures posted back on Page 17:

There are other examples there if you want to look.
thx mike...i think that will work. it seems like most of the inserts are pretty slim anyway. do you have any bulging issues?

(heh..i said bulging...)

thx for the link as well.

I've managed to reduce Farscape from what had been slightly more than one foot across of shelf space, to two inches.

Granted, the original packaging was beyond excessive, but I'm still going to make a big deal about it anyway.

I did it by using the UniKeep Disc10 cases that you can find at MicroCenter, but I put 13 pockets in each rather than 10 each. That can be done because the Disc10 claims to fit the CD plus the booklet, but without booklets one can manage to get in 2 or 3 more discs:

what did you all do for dvd sets that came in a custom box (like the indy jones, high school reunion, etc...)?

obviously those boxes were designed for the original case. if i go to the slim case and cut the sleeve -- i sort-of "obsolete" the box...don't i?

part of me says no biggie, since i clearly don't care about retail value anymore. but another part of me just hates to get rid of the box.

------

on a side note, i swapped out my two-disc cases, but the space savings wasn't that much more significant. i was kinda surprised. did i buy the wrong kind of slim double, or did you all have similar results? considering the minimal savings, i'm not sure i wanna cut the originals up...

For some things like the Indiana Jones set, I scan the box and resize it to fit a case like a slim-6. For others like Futurama, where the individual DVDs are already in slimpaks, I just toss the box. Then again, even though Roswell came in individual thinpaks, I use a slim-6 with a scan of the cover. Just follow your personal preferences and don't sweat tossing out the box.

yeah, i think that's what i'm gonna have to get over.

cutting the sleeves wasn't too painful, but tossing the box??? my goodness!

baby steps ted ... baby steps ....

Not sure, Ted. But here's one of my pictures from Page 17. You'll see on the right side, the Shrek two disc in a slim double next to the Singing in the Rain box (which is the size of a standard Amaray). Its slightly smaller -- not nearly as much trimming! They are REALLY smaller than the double Amarays (like the Fox 5-star collections/Disney Treasures/etc.).

In this picture, the ID4 slim double is placed right next to the INdy set which is still in standard Amarays. Is this the same size you got?

BTW, what are ya thinking about how your collection looks?
Definitely, not a fan of the thinpak spines.

I'm saving my space where I can via the single dvd case sized doubles, triples, and quads along with the 1in. slim 5/6 dvd cases with custom covers. Works great for TV series and preserves most original art for resale. We need a slim 7 case to shrink the X-Files sets down some more.

Unfortunately I still have about 20 snapper and super jewels to convert until everything is in a keepcase. The single dvd sized cases are now the perfect solution for all those bonus "Best Buy" discs as well.

Storing all the left over digipaks, carboard boxes, and snappers is a pain though. I'm out of self space though probably until I move with 1500+.
mike, my double-slims look pretty much just like your id4 & shrek (which i also have) cases.

when i was all done, i stacked the new slims next to the empty cases. i think i only saved about two empty cases worth of space. so, for all the hassle of cutting, etc, i'm not sure i'm gonna keep it up...but haven't made a final call yet.

i absolutely love the single-slims though and like how it sits on my rack though. i'm totally glad i did that.

i think i'm gonna ace the cardboard boxes as well. i think i'll toss away my high school reunion box first - that will be less painful then tossing my indy box.

i guess i can think of my reunion box as the "gateway drug"...

Does anyone know of any stores that carry double or triple thin cases. I've seen the single ones, and I really don't want to order online I only need 3 of them for My Due South Collection, those cases are awful.
thanks for any help.
Yeah. I, too, would love to know where to get "just a few" of the multiple cases. It seems like most on-line order sites want you to get large lots of cases.

As time goes on, I am getting madder and madder at myself for not getting-in-on dvdcoverart.com. There were a number of custom covers I wanted to get...Band of Brothers among them. And, I've still got a bunch of snappers I'd like to convert. Its time for me to crank up the scanner and get crackin'!

He who hesitates is lost.

Mike: I've still got the Photoshop files I used when I made Band of Brothers covers for my collection. Basically I took one of the covers from DVD Cover Art for the box set, took the front and back covers, added some episode information (e.g., "Disc One/Part One - Currahee/Part Two - Day of Days") to the front cover and something like "Band of Brothers Disc One" on the spine. I made the covers as one slimpak case per disc--six total. I did this mostly because I got the discs used (one by one) at Blockbuster and never had the tin for them. Front and back images are the same on all six covers, which is fine by me.

This is what I started with:

and this is what I ended with:

Anyway, PM me or reply if you want a copy of them, either to use as-is or modify to suit a different keep case. I still have the original cover art file from DVD Cover Art if you want that, too.

I've been wanting to get in on the slim-case bandwagon, but like many others I can't bear the thought of cutting up my covers. If DVD Cover Art was still around, I'd be downloading scans, cropping them to thinpak sizes, and printing them out myself and then storing the originals in a safe place. But since they're not, I don't know what I'm going to do. I've still got some covers that I've downloaded, so I'll probably start with those and then start scanning and printing the other covers. I'm sure my roommates would be happy if my DVD collection took up less space.

DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!

it's not as bad as you think. heck, after i put my first one together i was hooked.

i decided i'm probably not going to hack my doubles though. the space savings just isn't worth it to me. but i think i am going to ace my box sets (indy jones, star wars, etc.) now throwing away those boxes...that may hurt a little.
When I get around to doing the box sets and digi-pacs, I actually think I'll stick the boxes and other packaging inside a big plastic storage tub and put 'em up in the attic.

Why? I have no idea.

This comes at a time when I am purging all kinds of old memorabilia out of my life, too. Maybe its as you say, The, "baby steps, baby steps..."!

I went into Office Depot last night looking to pick up a cartridge for my little Ptouch label printer. I walked out with the cartridge, an X-Acto 12" rotary paper trimmer, and a 25-pack of Memorex-brand slim DVD cases.

I converted 30 or 35 DVD cases last night while I watched Along Came Polly. I started with a couple of the older titles in my collection that I told myself I didn't really care about "damaging" by trimming the art. That quickly turned in to "grab whatever discs are handy on the shelf and trim them." I'm especially hopeful that when I'm done, all my DVDs will fit inside my locking DVD cabinet, so I can keep my roommates away from them if I want to. (Right now that cabinet holds maybe 3/5 or 2/3 of my collection).

I'm hooked.

I'm going to need a ton of slim singles, a lot of slim doubles, and a dozen or two 4-, 5-, 6- and 7-disc cases.

I was going to order 78 doubles and 195 singles form tapeandmedia.com, but the shipping is kinda killer: $42.02 ground. Ouch. Without having to dig through this entire thread, what's the best place to get these cases? IIRC, lots of places online sell the Nexpak Thinpak singles and doubles, but the larger cases are usually found only on eBay. Did I remember that right?

Thanks guys!

I was at Staples tonight and found these. A 20 pack of clear slim Double DVD cases:

They were pricey. $15.99 for the case. I got these because I was short on doubles and they are as slim as the ThinPak singles! They look great!

They also stocked 25-packs of Memorex clear slim singles.

Dave:

I just ordered a bunch of 3,4,5 & 6 disc cases from effectuality.ca. The 3&4 disc cases are the width of a single Amaray, and the 5&6 disc cases have a 1 inch spine. They are dirt cheap: $0.61-$0.91 CDN.

If your order is less than $10, there is a $5 handling charge, if it's between $10-20, the handling fee is $2.50, and there's no handling charge for orders over $20. Shipping is via Canada Post, so the rates should be reasonable.

hey mike, can you confirm that? if they are *truly* as slim as single-slim cases, i may go for it. i gave all my other slim doubles away already.

Truly, Ted. Go to your local Staples and check 'em out! Same exact size as the slim singles!

I wish I'da known you were getting rid of your other doubles!

Longtime thinkpak user here. I tried cutting a cover recently rather than going through my laborious "scan, adjust spine, print inkjet cover" process. And I immediately regretted it.

Just thought I'd share that, since many people are expressing their love of cutting the actual covers.

I'm sticking to inkjet. That said, I've switched to cheap matte paper rather than glossy. That way I don't have to wait for it to dry, I can just pop it right into the replacement thin case.

awesome mike. i'm gonna stop by on friday!

sorry i didn't spare ya any of my doubles...

So, Will: What are you doing? Storing your original covers and cases in a separate location?

Are you thinking of potential re-sale factors? I'm curious about what your motivations are. I was originally hesitant about cutting covers but then decided, what the heck?!? In fact, during the six-hour Red Sox/Yankee telecast last night, I went to town on some recently-purchased DVDs that I wasn't sure I would cut. These included the Star Wars Trilogy. (However, I will admit that, instead of putting them in slim singles I put them in my semi-slim doubles to match the two-disc Episodes 1 & 2.) I also put my That's Entertainment box set in slim singles.

C'mon. If George Lucas can make changes to the Trilogy, why can't I?

I right now am in the middle of producing new covers to get rid of all the snappers from my collection and replacing them with thinpacks. I am thinking about storing all my original snappers and multi-set cardboard boxes in a separate place. But, I'm not sure why.

Interested in your thoughts.
For those that want to convert your snappers and a few others, I wounder if it would be OK to start a thread on Coverart swap?

Would that be against forum rules?
