DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases - Page 9

I got them through a company in Australia. When I get home I'll email you with my contact's email. He said he'd be happy to take more orders from interested people. Be warned though, it is kinda pricy when shipping is taken into account.

I've tried to contact any company I could find with these, and they were the only ones to respond. Good people to deal with though. I haven't found anywhere in the U.S. with these.

We should tell the owner of genesysdtp.com about these, he might order them for his store.

Update: I've just sent him an email.

Those 6s are definitely pretty decent looking. Shame nobody carries them in the US, because those definitely would be a nice alternative to the packaging the babylon 5 sets come in, which is prone to dropping the discs off the hubs.

Those look so much better than the digipak packaging. It's a shame that studios aren't using them.

What is the packaging called that is used for Babylon 5 and Deep Space Nine? Even though I have been making my custom DS9 covers to go in 6 and seven disc Alpha cases, I really like the packaging (the mechanics not the pix!). Essentially, they are plastic pages that open up like a book, instead of the endless folding out of digipaks.

I don't even know if they are made by the same company, because there are differences between the two. The B5 sets have the pages bound to the spine (causing creases on the spine, where they open up) and an inferior hub. They hole their discs on both sides of the plastic pages, unlike DS9. The DS9 set spines are not connected to the pages, so they don't end up with that creased look. The DS9 sets are also a little skinnier and are about an inch wide. The first season has one less disc, but the spines are the same width because they just made the pages thicker.

I would love to see a company release packaging like the DS9 sets but with a sturdier cover that you could insert your own artwork in. I'd like to see them come out for 5, 6, 7 and possibly 8 disc sets, and somehow keep the spines at the exact same width. Also get rid of the 3rd outer cover flap that is on the DS9 sets.

Anyway, that's what I want! Now who can I write to?

Got my cases from Wade. I love them! Here's a picture of some cases I've converted to them (two 6-discers converted from 6 disc Alpha cases and one 5-discer converted from custom packaging).

The cover art I converted to 3330 x 2175 pixels with the spine being .94 inches (15/16 of an inch). They look great. Thanks again, Wade!

I should also mention that the fantastic Sports Night cover art and Battlestar Galactica cover art is by none other than Ric Easton. The Godfather cover art I downloaded from dvdcoverart.com.
BTW, perhaps a mod can change the thread title to "DVD Thinpak and other Slim Cases" (for posterity searching titles...).
Ric! Put that Sports Night Cover where us mortals can find it! I've had an outstanding request forever for that and no one has yet done one!
I'll submit it to DVD Cover Art. A word of warning though... It's really nothing special, just a straight convert of the box. Its the big fat 6 discer, I didn't do the mod that skinnyfied it! If I upload it tonight, it may be there in a few days... They tend to get backed up.

Thanks for the plug, Andrea! Your new cases look great!

I just received a shipment of the Slim 4's and I have to say I like this case alot. This is what is being used instead of digipacks. Try to get any of the disks out of the Battlestar Galactica set without bending and prying.
Anyhow these will definately replace my Sopranos, Shield sets and any four disk set I have.
Actually andrea any chane of getting that converted galactica cover from you ? If you can email me that it would be great:

scarpad@netzero.net

I'd love to find a source for those slim 6 cases, they match the 4 slims nicely
post #252 of 1013
Sports Night cover is up at DVD Cover Art.

I'd like to see a US source for those slim 6'ers also. My only concern is that there is no room for a booklet.

Well, there is room for booklets in the slim-6, just not any clips for them.

I'm liking designing cases for these. Just finished making artwork for Buffy Season 2 and the Black Adder sets, and getting ready to continue the Buffy seasons.

If anyone's still interested on where to get the Slim-5 and -6, email me. (I just don't want to put his email out in the open where it could get harvested. He'd definitely be interested in selling more)

No problem. If anyone else wants the "skinnyfied" (a Ric Easton technical term!) cover of Sports Night or Battlestar Galactica, let me know.
Thanks. I wonder if you can put clip on pages into the Slim4's to turn them to slim6's?

Perhaps we should do a 'group purchase' of these... I could use 10 or 20 of them at least.... I know that shipping to/from OZ is pricey, but paying 'the first pound' for every order is painful...

I'd be interested if someone wanted to do this. However, I recognize that my organizational skills are not up to handling the process myself .

Has anyone actually found a source for just the clip on pages? I've got a few things where I'd love to just drop a flip page in a case that has the tabs for it (for things like bonus disks), but haven't been able to find a place to buy just the pages.

.017 cents each located here:

great place to deal with I get my orders very quickly
post #260 of 1013
Hmm, not quite what I was looking for. I'm more looking for the type that attach to clips on the spine of the case, similar to what a lot of two disc releases are like these days. (Like Terminator 3 had as one I can think of off the top of my head).
I could probably organize a group buy sometime after Thanksgiving. I have the feeling we would need to combine for at least 200 cases for it to be worthwhile. I know that with all the good TV product coming out, I was gonna stock up on another 20 or 30 6'ers. If anyone interested would email me before December 3rd with a quantity they would want to commit to, I'll see what I can do.

The cases for 4-6 DVDs all have the same outer dimensions. Would we want to mix and match, or just order strictly 6-DVD cases?

When I last bought them, the case prices alone were: (all in OZ $)

4-DVD - 2.25
5-DVD - 2.65
6-DVD - 4.45

Multiply by .72 to get the approx price in US $
post #262 of 1013
Yeah, I'd like to stock up on more 6-discers myself (and start converting things like Babylon 5). Are there any plans to make super slim 7-discers? I'd like to convert my Cosmos and Star Trek TNG sets at some point...
I asked about 7- and 8-DVD cases in this style, and they don't exist...at least not yet.

I'd like to 'skinnyfy' Cosmos, as well as DS9 (although that means Ric's great spine artwork wouldn't be OAR anymore).

OAR rules!

Add me to the list of ThinPak supports. I first saw them when the I Love Lucy DVDs started showing up in them and since then I've used them extensively myself. The double thinpaks are great for storing football games and long sports events I record with my DVD recorder.

I need some help from some of you more experienced in converting standard dvd cases to Thinpak's though. My first five Columbia House I Love Lucy volumes came in the normal keep cases, they didn't switch to the Thinpaks until the second group of five discs. I'd love to convert these original five discs to Thinpacks and "reconstruct" the covers to match using one of the current thinpak discs. The problem is I know essentially nothing about graphics design, if I scanned the old covers and one of the current thinpak ones could anyone out there help me with this? It shouldn't be that hard, it's mostly a matter of just matching the fonts and changing the episode summaries.
So how is everyone going about printing covers for the 4 to 6 disc cases? The case is a little longer than a 8 1/2x 11 sheet, so I'm wondering what people are printing on...

Thanks,
Dave
When I go to Copyworks to print out covers, I end up just using legal-sized paper for anything bigger than a single thinpak. To aid in making them, I altered one of the templates from dvdcoverart to a spine of about 15/16". I'll email it to you when I get home if you want it.
That'd be great - thanks Wade! I was going to work on a template today, but if you have one already.... Sometimes I go to a Kinko's here where I can print from a computer, but their printer usually has something wrong with it. I can also get higher quality prints from my inkjet (which says more about their crappy printer than my inkjet).

On TechTV this week they showed a $700 Epson that produced 13"x19" photo prints. Perfect for the budding DVD enthusiast. =)

Dave F. - YGM

Rick P. - YGM

ChadP2k - YGM

The total so far for the group order is 85, with a couple of others getting me their total needs. This total is only counting myself, Andrea W, and Rick P. If anyone else is interested in the 4's, 5's and 6's, contact me before the 3rd and join the group.
Is anybody planning a group buy for the slim 3 cases currently being sold on eBay? I'd be interested in 5-10 of these, but don't really have any use for 10. Also, are the slim four cases being sold at tapeandmedia.com similar to the ones Wade is taking orders for?
