Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

Wow, the original suit?! That's pretty awesome. I didn't think they'd even consider it for a second. Really good news there. I'm curious to see which villain as well.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

I'm curious how they'll pull the suit off on the big screen. The suit from the comics always seemed more like a strangely flexible one-piece metal suit as opposed to separate pieces of armor at the joints, etc.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

IIRC, the comics established that the armor moves the way it does because it's some kind of super-advanced mesh, basically like clothing but incredibly durable and seething with technology. OTOH, that's probably just to cover up the notion that artists probably don't like drawing real armor

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

The earliest Iron Man story I read was Avengers #1. I was surprised to see he had the cloth armor that early.

I need to find that Masterworks. I think it's out of print, though. I'm starting to have high hopes for this film.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

saw Joe Quesada getting interviewed on G4 yesterday and he said the property that he is most enthusiastic about is Iron Man. Not Spidey 3, not Wolverine or FF2, or Cap America.

interesting.
I wonder how much of that is the businessman in him talking as I expect that IM has the greatest merchandising potential of any of the properties (I'm expecting a rival to Transformers in the different kinds of configurations that we are going to be seeing w/ IM figures and toys)

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

It'll be interesting to see how they adapt the Mandarin to the screen. He's a great villain but as a Fu Manchu derivative he's the kind of character the PC police like to keep a very close eye on.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

I wish they had decided to go with the Crimson Dynamo. I bet they are going to work Mandarin in to Iron Mans origin.

Teaser poster, with word that this is not necessarily the final version of the armor:

AICN is reporting that Robert Downey, Jr. has been casted as Tony Stark.

Variety seems to have just confirmed it as well. Cool.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

That's an interesting choice. I like it, though, as Downey is very talented and this is a good sign for the flick.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

Downey is a very good actor. This may turn out to be a quality film.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

I think this is brilliant casting. Downey has the looks, the acting skills, and experience fighting addiction. Perfect for Tony Stark.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

Perhaps it is time to rename the title of this thread.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

I'm sorry, but this...

... is NOT my idea of Tony Stark.

Okay, so the guy knows what it's like to be a drug addict... but, geez, actors can... act. My anticipation for this movie was high but has now hit the ground.

Should've gone with an "unknown" who fit the bill.

I will see how things progress. Anything can happen. Downey may still be fired off the project yet.

Man, this news sucks.

Re: Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

Hmmm. Downey, Jr. is definitely not what I had in mind. I was expecting someone younger and perhaps more suave.

But I think he is a great actor, so it's definitely an interesting choice.
