How do you like your Dahlquist speakers - Page 3

Leon, I think you have some major room enhancement maybe? I didn't really notice a difference plugged or not or is that ? Anyway, I didn't notice a difference maybe I don't play it loud enough I turned it up though, seemed just as clean and deep. I don't find I get too much reverb if any.

James, it sounds as though you are blessed with a neutral environment Due to my layout, it's not surprising that I have a room enhancement. I'm glad to hear that blocking a port did not an impact on the bass for you. Guess that means those of us with a room node can get closer to the full potential of the QX10 by blocking a port, since blocking a port did not cause adverse affect in a your more ideal situation.

I have to admit, in my room the difference is not overwhelming, but to me the slight improvement is the difference between sounding very good and sounding very natural/real.

Has anyone listened to the QX9 and compared them to the QX10? I wondered if the major difference was just a little less bass? Does the QX9 have a higher efficiency? I wonder if it the same difference as seen in the Paradigm Studio 100 and 60's.

From what I gather the 9's have a different crossover network which completely changes the sound from the 10's. The 9's speakers are different from the 10's as well. The 10's are the only speaker in the line-up with different set of drivers for the lower octaves, the other speakers have the same type of driver for mid and bass.

James is right, the lower two woofers in the QX10 are unique to that model with bigger coils and longer throw.
The QX10 are a three way design too so the vocal range is resolved with more accuracy.
The QX9 are still excellent for their timbral accuracy though and are a lot less expensive too (especially if you can get factory seconds). I would still rank them as a best buy for the price range.
The QX9 are slightly less efficient than the QX10; rated at 93dB as opposed to 94dB for the QX10.

James,Marc
Thanks for the info. Why I ask is I have listen to the Paradigm Studio 60's and 100's. I didn't like the 100's. The 60's had more detail IMO. I see, in this case, going to the bigger ones is not necessarily the best option for me. And the 60's I was told were more efficient than the 100's. Then I look on their web site and like the QX the 60's and 100' differ by 1dB. 90dB for the 60's and 91 dB for the 100's. If higher the number means better efficiency then I was told wrong about the 60's being more efficient.
Since I'm not into loud do you think I should look for a speaker with one woofer instead of two and let the sub take care of the lows?

Clyde, I can't speak for the QX9, but the QX10's are more detailed in the mid range than the QX60 center channel (2 sixes in a sealed chamber). The highs are similar, and the mid of the QX60 is very good. But, the QX10's to me are the really special part of my setup. I have the QX10's in gloss...

Good Luck

I have all Dahlquists'in 7.1. 2- QX10's 4- QX6s and the QX60c Center. Set to large. Went back to small and it did not last 5 minutes.

I bought a Dahlquist "Profiles" center channel about 2 years ago of uBid for about $70 and have enjoyed it a lot. My friend has a very nice Polk center, and they sound almost the same. I think the Polk is a little nicer.

Adam,
Those were from a different Dahlquist company. The new Dahlquist has only been around about a year and a half and the QX series and Orbit sat/sub system are their first offerings so far.
These ones are designed by Richard Hunter (formerly of KEF) and Ian Brown (formerly of API).

James, just wanted to send a thank you to you and all those on this forum who wrote about the QX10. I bought a pair at the end of January, without ever hearing them, because of the excellent reviews provided by you folks. These speakers are everything you said. Great bass for such a small profile speaker. But the midrange! Vocals, instruments, sound like you would not believe! Clear, accurate, uncolored, these speakers are the real deal. I have added a QX60 as a center channel to make it all Dahlquist across the front and I could not be happier. Marc at the Audioshop was a pleasure to deal with, handling a return on one of the speakers that had a blemish in the vinyl finish. It is so thrilling to be able to improve my home theater system in this way, by relying on fellow HT buffs who give great advice and direct you to some genuine steals in the audio kingdom. I believe the Dahlquist QX10's have to be one of the great values on the audio market today. Thanks again to all those forum contributors who provide such helpful information to us all.

Hey folks I'm a newbie and thought I'd bring this old thread (found through audioshop's dahlquist review links page) back to life!

A buddy of mine in Markham (Toronto) has had some Dahl's for a while (QX8 fronts, QX50C center, QX6 surrounds, and QX5 rear surrounds) and kept trying me to buy some. Unfortunately I'm in Vancouver (several thousand kilometers/miles away) and couldn't just pop over for an audition.

Well, recently a co-worker was in the market to replace his older polk audio bookshelf 5.1 setup and we went shopping. We wound up at Visions Electronics, which also sell the Dahl's. We auditioned several different ones in the new series (with the A on the end of the model numbers) and were somewhat impressed but let me tell you the store did not do them justice. He took home a set of QX7A's for the front, QX6A's for the rear and a QX60CA center and when I went over to listen I was floored at how good they sounded.

So I ended up buying myself a set. I went with the same setup except the QX8A fronts instead of the QX7A. The 8A is the tower version of the 7A with the same drivers but it definitely sounds a lot more defined, even ignoring the extra bass reproduction. I did also listen to the QX9A and had a hard time choosing between the two, but in the end decided the QX8A was a better fit for my budget and taste. I also heard the QX10A and absolutely looooooved it, it's definitely a class above the 9,8,7 etc. But way out of my price range.

Anyway I've had these since Christmas eve day and I'm in love. Then on boxing day I ran into a good price on an Infinity 12" PS-12 sub and took it home. Overall a very nice setup. I don't think I've ever heard anything like these dahlquists for the price! I've enjoyed surprising guests at my house over the holidays with how good they sound. The Norah Jones live in New Orleans DVD is a great demo disc, as is the Eagles Hell Freezes over in DTS.

BTW I also talked to Marc a few times by email, and he was even recommended to me by Ian Brown at Dahlquist. In the end I decided that I wanted my speakers right away rather than waiting for shipping over the holidays and that's why I bought them locally. No offense Marc. He definitely has a great reputation here and I think it's well deserved.

Cheers everyone and enjoy your speakers! And remember, if you're not floored by them in the store, try taking them home, you may yet be blown away.

Scott.

You did Good,

I went all the way and got a pair of the QX10's, 4 each of the QX6's and a QX60c, as I too have a Infinity 12" SUB.
Just wait untill they break in!
My Setup: http://users.adelphia.net/~allen22/1Audiopage_3.htm

We just get spell bound sometimes at how great these things sound. Folks come over and it never fails. After a bit they just have to investigate.
Try shutting off the sub and listen to how litttle it is needed. The QX10's are just awsome!
I have never regretted my purchase. Marc is great!

Thought I would pop in here and mention how great those Dahlquist speakers are. I listened to them over the summer, and they were very impressive. Really full, pleasant, and very smooth sounding, but still with lots of prescence.

Marc is DA MAN to deal with.....you certainly will get a nice honest answer from him. Although I'm a big Energy and Paradigm fan, I almost bought the set. Definitely worth a listen.

Thread Starter
Hey fellow dahlquist owners. Still loving my set up. I see Marc is having another clearance sale. Does anyone have one of the dahlquist subs. I have been looking at the 12" version and Marc has a pretty good deal on it right now.

Anyone?

Whoa, this thread's been dead for over 4 years, in any case, I must put in my 2 bits.

I have owned a pair of qx10's for several years, along with the qx8ab, and the center channel. I ran these with a marantz sr4300, upgraded to a class t amp (bet you dont know what that is) and now run 3 marantz ma500 monoblocs. I am not even close to being done messing aound with these speakers. They are unbelievable. they are not the best speaker ever made, but hell, for someone who is on a budget, they are without equal.I already had the qx8ab(paid $780 secondhand) I got the qx10 on clearance for $700, and the center for $288.

All the way home I had buyers remorse, but when I got home and hooked them up, my buddy and I went holy sh*t! The surround sound was unbelieveable. To this day I sometimes jump when I hear a sound behind me, thinking something is outside the house. Now that's realistic surroundsound!

All in all they still blow my mind, and I am very happy to have them. IMHO the only upgrade would be a much more expensive(3x the price) very carefully selected speaker. and even at that I'd probably miss these. So for now, and the foreseeable next few years, I am going to continue loving these awesome beasts!
