Updated with Old School ( ) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines ( ).

The former, a DVD diversion, was a rather stupid comedy that never-the-less struck all the right chords.

The latter was an experience very much superior to what I expected, both playful and yet intelligent. The marketing was in some ways genius; by preparing for the worst we'd be utterly blown away by something above average. The ending game me chills, and them not copping out on having the TX come back nude sold the deal. I hope they do make a T4 about the war between John Connor and the machines. And I hope they don't try to insert yet another model of Arnold into it.

Updated my list again with Pirates of the Caribbean (a VERY enjoyable 90%), and The Hulk (a good but not great film, 85%).

Updated with Terminator 3 - entertaining yet better the first time around (T2).

Updated with the overlong-and-not-great-but-not-all-THAT-awful Gods and Generals and a stunningly boring DTV horror flick called Bog Creatures.

Interesting double feature, lemme tell ya.

Updated to stick the Polish Brothers' Northfork on the top of my list. An extraordinary, sad, beautiful film, filled with unusual characters who never become merely "quirky", and imagery that is well worth just soaking in. Try and get to see it if you get a chance, since it is offbeat enough that it will likely get a limited release, short runs where it does play, and little mention come awards season.

The last guy in this thread to update with Pirates Of The Caribbean. Pretty solid entertainment.

Ozon's Swimming Pool is entertaining, though I didn't think it was as good as 8 Women or Under The Sand. Part of it may have been expectations, because it is really more of a comedy than the thriller it is billed as. It is funny, extremely at times, but is cluttered with red herrings and an overly obvious and superficial theme. Highly recommended for the gorgeous Ludivine Savinier, often nude, though her acting doesn't impress the way it did in 8 Women. B

The Eye is a disappointing HK horror movie that is very light on the horror involving a woman who has a cornea transplant and can now see people as they are about to die and are led off by a shadowy Death figure. Much of the plot involves the typical ghosty "finishing the dead's unfinished business so they can rest" . To quote Bruce Campbell from The Hudsucker Proxy - "That gag's got whiskers on it!" . Everybody's trying hard but it sure doesn't amount to much. Skip it or if you must, just rent in preparation for the inevitable American remake (Tom Cruise already purchased the rights). C

Updated with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LXG) ( )
This would be a three star plus film if it had been intended. But the utter solemnity and pretentious seriousness by all involved only completes the picture as a perfectly-crafted train wreck, only on the rarest occasions taking a misstep into quality. Pointless plot thrusts, a total disregard for logic - both internally and universally. We got some rather cold stares from audience members, however my friend and I could stop from laughing through out the whole damn thing. From the witless one-liners, to half of Venice being destroyed without anyone noticing (but hey, they didn't notice when Nautilus crawled up the canal system, conveniently fitting just under all the arches like they were made for the ship, either...) to a final farewell that looks like it's taking us on a new schizophrenic direction but instead leads, rather inexplicably to the credits. Mystery Science Theater 3000 needs to get the rights to this... I'd be brilliant.

Pirates of the Caribbean solid, fun entertainment with delicious performances by Depp and Geoffrey Rush. Other than being a bit too long and never using the phrase "the bone yard", nothing to complain about. B

Added Hollywood Homicide to my list. It is one of the biggest incoherent pieces of shit I have ever witnessed in my entire life.

Thanfkully my girlfriend and I were making out for a majority of the movie in the theater (and luckilly we were the only two there) so it wasn't all that bad.

I was actually reading an old thread the other day when you asked if any members had daughters you could date. Did that pan out after all.

Anyway I updated earlier this week with Terminator 3, a solid 1/2. Like most others I liked the ending but it felt a little monotonous at times, it was like one big chase film with hardly any slowing down. Arnie seemed a little off in his performance to me, but overall a marginal recommendation.

Updated with a couple more:

I Capture The Castle is a nifty coming-of-age story, a little heavy on the voice-overs but filled with sly humor. Well worth seeking out.

Garage Days is a pretty big departure for Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City), being both a comedy and colorful. It's a somewhat by-the-numbers story of a rock and roll band with too many endings, but it's also crammed tight with manic energy. It's not near the level of his other two movies, but it's a valuable exercise in stretching his talent. ¾

I've updated with

May ***
a good and effective horror movie, love how it's something more than just a horror movie(something deeper lies within), but not as great as I had hoped.
The ending slid fast.

Art of Dying **1/2
great ideas and a great story but not fleshed out well enough.

Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over ***
A great way to end the trilogy, it was like one big reunion movie, even though I wished some of the characters stayed on screen more.
The 3-D was sorta effective.
Still, the movie was creative and imaginative.
Surprisingly, Stallone was entertaining in five different roles(counting the newsman)
NOTE:Make sure you stay till the very end of the credits for:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
the very first audition tests for the Spy Kids

Laura Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life **

I had actually liked the first film, but here I was disappointed.
I loved the different locations.
But felt the story was very bland.
Hardly any interesting action or action sequences.

Swimming Pool
7.5 of 10

Here's a case where any elitest ideals could be proven untrue for me I think, because Swimming Pool feels like high art but "reads" like rehashed thriller. The actual direction is often outstanding, but the script treads ground that I've seen too often already, especially from the "writer as protagonist" angle. In the end the film felt a bit dull because of this.

I'd rather have just rewatched A Friend Like Harry or The Deep End again, both of which had a similar tone to them but a more interesting story.

Updated with Lilja 4-Ever, which is very good, but slightly sabotages itself by making Lilja a little too strong. As horrific as this movie's last act is, I didn't quite believe it would break Lilja. ½
