Sure, there are a number of us back on the first page still going strong--I'm closing in on 100 and one fellow's above 140. We're just editing our posts instead of tacking on new ones.

I edit also to add new DVDs to the month but shouldn't we "tack" on new posts (last completed month) to keep this thread from getting buried?

I'll admit that I have being cheating a little. What I usually do is watch just the movie & visit the extras at a later date. Currently have 23 to go back to & some of those are just a few extras per title. Luckily I sold off about 45 titles last month to trim down the collection a little or otherwise I wouldn't have the time to complete this.

6 movies in one day? Damn.

Joe's a maniac. We're at day 150 of the year and he's at over 180 discs watched. And I thought I was out of control. Even in my wussified version of the Challenge I'm doing poorly compared to his Olympic numbers---112 discs watched, only 86 of them 2003 acquisitions--which means I'm just over half of my 2003 acquisitions. The TV series boxsets (I know, we're not supposed to count them, sue me--Babylon 5 and Buffy are too entertaining not to watch) are eating too much time, as are catching up on old MST3Ks. Last night I was going to watch Dance of Death with the superannuated Boris Karloff, but was chagrined to find that there was no DVD inside the case! Back to DDD I go for an exchange. So I settled for Armando de Ossorio's Fangs of the Living Dead. Wow, what a terrible movie, and Retromedia's presentation of it wasn't much better.

And I'm ready to quit. It's getting to be too much of a hassle to do this. I'm starting to watch DVD's just for the sake of getting it out of the way instead of watching & enjoying the film/extras for what it is. I feel like I'm becoming a slave to my DVD collection.

And as I stated before I've still got about 25-30 dvd's worth of extras still to complete. Also, if I watch another making of feature explaining how they filmed a movie and inserted the CGI later, my brain is going to explode.

Plus another thing thats going to hold me back in the next few months is I'm going to be away from home for 16 of the next 60 days. So thats going to put a monkey wrench in things.

The only thing that has kept me going the past few weeks is that I've finally upgraded to new audio equipment such as a new 6.1 DD/DTS receiver, subwoofer, center & surround speakers, so I've been into it a little bit more lately. But still it's become a hassle.

I'll hang in till after the 4th of July weekend and see if I can still do this. Otherwise I'm out of here.

Joe

Heck, even if you stopped now, it'd be tough to catch you. I hear ya about the CGI supplements, though. I've watched enough of those over the last five years that I feel like I could sit down with a mouse and do them myself. It's also greatly lowered my tolerance for crappy CGI (Matrix Reloaded, Hulk trailer), since I know that they can do a lot better at minimal additional expense.

Hey, challengees, it's almost July, and we're at the halfway point! How are folks doing on their challenge? For me, it's going dismally, even in its wussified version (watching everything I acquire in 2003). 204 discs acquired in 2003 thus far and only 103 of them watched, plus 26 others from earlier years and 64 reviews. But it's fun looking over the list and seeing what I've seen (and some of them are already only dimly remembered!) Currently working through The Hours....
You kidding? You guys are running circles around me. At only 64 DVDs viewed thus far, I'm just happy to be able to beat my previous best of 13 dvds in January with 14 this past month. I also watch a handful of dvd rentals (which cannot be included in the Challenge) and shows on my TiVo. While 24, Alias, Six Feet Under, Smallville & 5 hours of WWE programming were invading my TiVo on a (mostly) weekly basis, I was only able to watch 15 dvds total for Feb/Mar. Luckily, I haven't been watching Sopranos, Sex and the City, Oz and The Shield as they broadcast.(have only seen season 1 of each, thus far). But I want to try and see 20 in a month before the year is over. Oh well.

There should be a movie challenge.

Wow, no other responses? No June lists? Has everyone dropped out of the challenge or are we just on vacation?

I gave up 2 weeks ago. Collection too large to see everything in 1 year.

So did everyone spend their summer watching DVDs? I'm still logging my progress here, but I've fallen under 50% of new acquisitions and with the huge upcoming week that's going to get even worse, I'm afraid. No way to keep up. I blame the TV sets. I'm reviewing Outer Limits Season 2 this week and it's taking forever to get through 17 one-hour episodes. Of course, my desire to sit on the lakefront and drink beer on Labor Day probably doesn't help.

How's everyone else coming? Or am I all alone here?

So, did anyone--anyone--anyone??? successfully complete the Challenge? I did poorly even on my wussified version---Final total of 269 discs watched, and of them 233 were 2003 acquisitions, or roughly 45.7% of the new discs acquired, and a pitiful percentage of my total collection (a little under 9%, if you count all discs watched). But when you consider the time that it took to write 150 reviews in the space of a year I could have watched a heck of a lot more discs....though would I have been motivated to do so? Probably not, but if I hadn't been reviewing that might also have reduced the number accumulated by nearly a third too (alas, I'd probably have bought many of them anyway). And I did end up cheating and counting some TV sets in the total--it helped motivate me to clear out the backlog of those substantially, to the point where I'm caught up on nearly everything I'm collecting except X-Files in the TV world. So that's a plus.

I can certainly sympathize with Joe Fisher in the notion of becoming a slave to your DVD collection. I got that feeling more than once in this project. On the other hand, the process helped me be a shade more careful in acquiring DVDs since I started to think, well, when *exactly* am I going to get to this? That didn't stop me from adding, um, way too many discs to my collection, though. But it was fun keeping the log. Maybe a new thread for 2004--not a challenge, but just a log of DVDs watched--would be in order. Would that best be here in Software, or should it be in Polls?

Only managed to see 128 movies but some where dups while others are no longer on my list (blind purchases that didn't appeal). December was just brutal for me as I had not time at all to see practically any DVDs. Will try to beat my monthly best (18) in the 2004 HTF DVD Challenge.
