OK, I've finally updated my Top Ten, and posted my HTF Award noms.

Thanks to Dana & Jason for your hard work in running this thread and tabulating the results!!
No new movies, added the film awards except actor where I couldn't decide and song, where I didn't remember anything special.

Hi all,

I will be posting one final update later tonight (after I get back from seeing Irreversible). After that, I'll be focusing solely on getting the Tracker tool done so everybody can use that to maintain their top 10 for 2003 and beyond, and I can use that to generate stats. It'll be very interesting to see how the stats change as films are released throughout the year!
Ok, folks, this is IT. The LAST update for the Top 30 of Our Top 10 of 2002; with Oscars coming up in less than 48 hours, I figured this was a great place to end it. It's been a fun ride, and overall I'm quite pleased with the results.

Thanks to all the contributors, new and old, who've kept me one hell of a busy beaver these past few weeks!

For 2003, I'm developing a Tracker website tool for HTF members to track their films, fill out lots of personal details (date seen, locale, comments, etc.), and select a desired style for output and copy/paste the results into the 2003 Film List thread. Eventually I'll even have stats built into the tool too (which is the ultimate goal...so I don't have to go thru every post in the Film List and Top 10 threads, one by one, and manually enter film titles and rankings into a spreadsheet, argh! ).

Anyway, I'll keep y'all posted on the tool; I'm beta-testing it with a few members over the next couple weeks, getting out some of the bugs, working in some features, making sure it makes sense, etc. Until then...

Enjoy this round of numbers! I went through everybody's Top 10 post very carefully this last time to make sure I had everything correct.

If you see any errors in the tabulations, let me know and I'll correct them ASAP.

So, here we go...

Columns:
  1. Position
  2. Film Title
  3. Total Score: A summation of each film's position in each contributor's top 10, with points given as follows: 1st place = 10, 10th place = 1. 10th place ties get .5 points per tie, limit to 2. All ties above 10th place get full points in each position, so long as the total points for the contributor does not exceed 55 (10+9+...+1); if that happens, remainder of tie will be divided like they were 10th place.
  4. Fractional Weighted Total: The total combined fractional weighted scores of each contributor's film. Fractional weighted scores are computed for each contributor by the position of the film against the total number of films seen -- i.e., if a contributor saw 50 films, 1st place is 50/50 (1.00), 10th place is 41/50 (0.82). This gives more weight to lists with higher film totals.
  5. Top 10 List Appearances : 2002 Film List Appearances: Ratio of a film's appearance in this thread to how many appearances it makes in contributors' lists in the 2002 Film List thread. This gives better value to the Weighted Average (and Total Score) numbers.
  6. Weighted Average: Total Score divided by Top 10 List Appearances. This is considered weighted because it only takes into account those contributors who have the film in the top 10.
  7. Unweighted Average: Total Score divided by total number of Top 10 contributors (currently 87).

Oh well, just missed getting marked down for one more out of the top 30, The Quiet American. Not anywhere near my top 10 lists.

Well Dana... thanks for making this thread such a memorable success, and thank you for all the hard work you've put into it. (I'm sure that my nitpicking didn't help either...)

Jason, thanks for all your hard work in making this thread possible. It's too bad we didn't get to see your nominations for the HTF Film Awards, as I was really looking forward to reading them.

I think we should keep this thread archived permanently at the HTF... I'm sure that we'll want to refer back to it often.

I was too busy last night watching Tarkovsky's Solyaris last night to post my nominations...and then the power went out around midnight when I logged on. Rest assured, mine will be going up in an hour or so.

Anyone who's left, feel free to post whatever nominations you can in the meantime before the Oscars. And I hope to see you all at the chat!

Oh, and I just bumped my total up to 103 with Femme Fatal and I Spy last night. Neither impressed me all that much, but both are fun at the rental quality level. I'm sure changing my total to 103 wouldn't have any effect at all.

Dana, excellent work on all of this and on the upcoming project ahead of time.

I'll probably skip the chat because the Hi Def set isn't near the CPU. Maybe if I get bored with the HD telecast (which seems unlikely ).

With more time in reflection, I moved Irreversible into my top 10 and bumped TTT out.
Did some major rearranging, with Punch-Drunk Love taking over the top spot, and 25th Hour leap frogging up two spots. I moved Potter down 3 spots, and Igby Goes Down up 2. I also saw Moonlight Mile, a fantastic movie that's just a hair short of bumping Y Tu Mama Tambien.

So my revised list is like this:

2002 Top 10 List

1. Punch-Drunk Love
2. 25th Hour
3. Minority Report
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
5. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
6. Gangs of New York
7. Igby Goes Down
8. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
9. Catch Me If You Can
10. Y Tu Mama Tambien

Sweet Home Alabama just made my 10 worst films list at #10. Nothing like a terrible script being "acted" in some sort of reading-it-for-the-first-time method.
Okay... I had some free time, so I opted to enter all the HTF award nominations into a spreadsheet and see what the results were. Votes were scored 5-4-3-2-1 except the categories which explicitly specified three entries, which were scored 3-2-1. Categories without a full complement of entries were used, and just counted at the high end (i.e., 5-4-3). If Dana anybody would like, I'll email the Excel sheet or post the "all entries" version.

And here the results are, as of 28 March 2003:

Best Director: Roman Polanski (The Pianist)
Runners-up: Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York), Pedro Almodovar (Talk To Her), Paul Thomas Anderson (Punch-Drunk Love)

Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis (Gangs Of New York)
Runners-up: Adrien Brody (The Pianist), Nicolas Cage (Adaptation), Michael Caine (The Quiet American), Jack Nicholson (About Schmidt)

Best Actress: Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven)
Runners-up: Nicole Kidman (The Hours), Diane Lane (Unfaithful), Meryl Streep (The Hours), Cate Blanchett (Heaven)
Note: All actresses from The Hours got nominations for both "Best Actress" and "Best Supporting Actress"

Best Supporting Actor: Chris Cooper (Adaptation)
Runners-up: Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), Ed Harris (The Hours), John C. Reilley (Chicago), Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can), Dennis Quaid (Far From Heaven), Alfred Molina (Frida)
Comments: First, I think we need a seperate category for "collaborative performances" like Gollum; maybe next year. Also note that Reilley received votes for The Good Girl, and Molina received votes (well, okay, one, from me) as a lead.

Best Supporting Actress: Meryl Streep (Adaptation)
Runners-up: Samantha Morton (Minority Report), Kathy Bates (About Schmidt), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago), Julianne Moore (The Hours)
Comments: Streep, Moore, and Zeta-Jones(!) all received votes as leads in these parts; Steep also received a "best supporting" vote for The Hours

Breakthrough Performance: Maggie Gyllenhaal (Secretary)
Runners-up: Adam Sandler (Punch-Drunk Love), Ryan Gosling (The Believer), Sam Rockwell (Confessions of a Dangerous Mind), Adrien Brody (The Pianist), Evelyn Sampi (Rabbit-Proof Fence), Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher)

Best Animated Feature: Spirited Away
Runners-up: Metropolis, Lilo and Stitch

Best Foreign-Language Film: Spirited Away
Runners-up: Y Tu Mama Tambien, Talk To Her, City Of God, Sex And Lucia
Comment: Just imagine how well City Of God will do next year when more people feel it's eligible.

Best Documentary: Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Runner-up: Bowling For Columbine
Comment: Not an official category, and no other entry came particularly close.

Best Art Direction: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Runners-up: Gangs Of New York, Far From Heaven, Road To Perdition, Frida

Best Costume Design: Gangs Of New York
Runners-up: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Chicago, Frida, Road To Perdition, Far From Heaven, The Cat's Meow
Comments: Close between GONY and LOTR, then a drop to Chicago, then another drop

Best Cinematography: Road To Perdition
Runners-up: Far From Heaven, Gangs Of New York, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Minority Report

Best Editing: The Hours
Runners-up: Chicago, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Gangs Of New York, Adaptation

Best Make-up: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Runners-up: Frida, The Hours, Gangs Of New York, Chicago
Comment: LOTR absolutely crushes its competition (60 pts vs. 24 for Frida)

Best Music Score: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Runners-up: Punch-Drunk Love, Catch Me If You Can, The Hours, Far From Heaven

Best Song: "The Hands that Built America" (Gangs of New York)
Runners-up: "Lose Yourself" (8 Mile), "Gollum's Song" (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers), "I Move On" (Chicago), "8 Mile" (8 Mile), "Always With Me" (Spirited Away)
Comments: Even if Bill Harris's "8 Mile - Eminem" meant "Lose Yourself", U2 still takes the category. A lot of partial entries, too.

Best Screenplay, Adapted: Adaptation
Runners-up: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Hours, Chicago, The Pianist

Best Screenplay, Original: Punch-Drunk Love
Runners-up: Adaptation, Talk To Her, Far From Heaven, Spirited Away
Comment: There were disagreements about whether Adaptation or Gangs Of New York were original or not, though this hurt Gangs more than Adaptation

Best Sound: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Runners-up: Minority Report, Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones, Punch-Drunk Love, Gangs Of New York
Comment: LOTR 49 points, MR 28.

Best Sound Effects Editing: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Runners-up: Minority Report, Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones, Punch-Drunk Love
Comment: Another LOTR blowout; it scored over twice as many points as MR.

Best Visual Effects: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Runners-up: Minority Report, Star Wars: Attack Of The Clones
Comments: 66 pts for LOTR, 51 for MR, 24 for AOTC, and various others with a vote or two. I would have expected it to be a bit closer, and I'll leave it at that for now.
