User Reviews: Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player

Pros: Full HD video and audio with plenty of features
Cons: The death of HDDVD
Cons: The death of HDDVD
OK, I get it...HD-DVD is dead.....OR IS IT??? Muwahahahaha!
I bought this Toshiba new at a company silent auction at the end of 2008...so HD-DVD had already lost long before I bought this set. So why buy it, you ask?
That's easy: price and features. We all know that HD-DVD released with a myriad of features long before Blu-ray got their act together. So I could basically buy a defeated format that has the same functionality, connectivity, video/audio quality for a fraction of the cost.....AND the movies are DIRT CHEAP!
Now let's get this out of the way: Of course, I'm going to buy a blu-ray player. I can only go so far. But consider this: For the 475 HD-DVD movies that have been released to the U.S. and are still in circulation in some fashion - we're talking about a boatload of movies, that I'll want to get which are available in HD-DVD 1080p glory. So why not get them at the reduced price? Why pay more for the blu-ray format? When the time comes when i have all the older titles that were released in HD-DVD purchased and I've hit the ceiling, of course, I'll continue to move forward and invest in blu-ray.
To point out my case, this past month I hit up Amazon.com for some HD-DVD's - I purchase the entire first season of HEROES, the first season of Battlestar Galactica, The Perfect Storm, the Complete Matrix Trilogy boxset, Twister, Constantine, What Dreams May Come, and American Werewolf in London (original 1984) all for $40 shipped!!! YOU CAN'T BEAT THAT!!!!!
And most of them are dual sided with the movie feature available to play on HD-DVD and/or standard DVD!!!
As far as the Toshiba HD DVD player goes, I've been extremely happy with it - great on screen setup/function menus, great look that compliments the HT and internet connectivity. It has onboard TrueHD and DTS Master audio decoders and auto-detect video resolution.
Money I save here is money spent on building up the rest of the setup - HD-DVD may have lost, but with it, I'm continuing to win!
