Pros: easy to use, awesome PQ and sound
Cons: lack of analogs, problems with certain discs, no firmware update to download from computer
Toshiba enters the Blu ray world with their first player. Toshiba with universal had gone with HDDVD a few years back and lost. now they are here with the first blu ray player. I had a Toshiba HD-a2 player and it worked good. However I did like that blu ray had better movies choices so I moved to my first player of a ps3. I then got a Panasonic 30 and then upgraded to the 60/605 and then the 80. due to a problem with the Panasonic 80, I decided to get another player that I could trust. Enter the new Toshiba player. I got a great price match from best buy the other day when I picked this item up. SETTING UP The player is very simple and sturdy like the HD-a2 player. the set up is mostly pretty easy with the remote. However there were times when the buttons moved to fast at times. they had the usual sets up things that you find in a blu ray player. there is also an option for deep color and also 16x9/squeeze. I chose that one to be able to see a proper 4:3 image and it worked just fine. you might want to turn the angle button off so you don't get annoying icon button on the top right corner. its very easy to turn off and no problems after that. I was watching the star trek seasons sets. a couple of minor problems, the Toshiba has an auto for the resolution of the picture, with gives the 480, 720, 1080P, and 1080x24. It would have problems staying on the 1080Px24 and go back to auto. I also had this problem with the Panasonic 80. I guess its a common problem. I have a onkyo 605 receiver and so I can bitstream the sound from the receiver to the player. Sadly this player does not do analogs. Watching blurays/dvds: I also have a Philips 47pfl7403D/f7 and it can do the 120 refresh rate. I say this because my TV give an awesome picture for most everything. the PQ on the Toshiba is a very fine PQ. I did some test between the Toshiba and the Panasonic 80. I found the PQ a bit better on the Toshiba. the black brightness was a bit better. I have played all kinds of movies on bluray and dvd. the dvd upconversion was also very good. I might just have a good TV upscale. I played blu rays from spidey 2 to ID4 to batman begins to star wars 3 on dvd. I also watched a few animated features like monsters inc, wonder woman, walle, and others and they looked fine. speed of the player: the big question is the speed of the player. Some players are very fast and like the ps3 and others a bit slow. I found it to be a good speed, some titles on bluray loaded up very fast and others were slow. took about the same time to load up t2:skynet as the Panasonic player. the sound for the player: the sound is also very important and I would play certain titles and have to turn up the volume to hear the voices. I found that the Toshiba player for some reason (I do not understand /bitstreaming) that it would be a bit different. however when playing the new star trek movie on the Panasonic. I had to set up very loud to hear it, unlike the Toshiba where it seem a bit more balanced. where I could hear both the action and the dialogue at the same time more leveled. I could be wrong about this. perhaps a better expert could answer. two things that I liked about it: one was the simple display info which would tell you the chapter and also the running time of the movie and also the sound playback info like truehd/DTS HD etc. it was very useful. I also found the subtitles, audio and angles buttons on the remote to use. you press the audio and then press enter on the remote to move up and down, to change the sound or subtitles that you want. its a bit tricky at first, but easy once you get the hang of it. the other thing that I liked about it. when you stop the movie, it would tell you if you can press play and start where you had stopped on dvds and certain non-java bluray titles. a very nice feature. I did have a few problems with certain discs. I also had these problems with the Panasonic 80 player as well. I am thinking its more of a disc problem then the player. FINAL THOUGHTS: I would still strongly recommend the player for people who are starting out on bluray. the price is very good for it and its not expensive like the Oppo (which I hear is a top of the line player). due to the problem with the Panasonic 60/80 and no solution for it at this time. I would recommend this player for people that want to watch blu rays and dvds.
