Three Outlaw Samurai (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

This first film by the legendary Hideo Gosha (Sword of the Beast) is among the most canonized chambara (sword-fighting) films. An origin-story offshoot of a Japanese television series phenomenon of the same name, Three Outlaw Samurai is a classic in its own right. In it, a wandering, seen-it-all ronin (Tetsuro Tamba) becomes entangled in the dangerous business of two other samurai (Isamu Nagato and Mikijiro Hira), hired to execute a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate. With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes, this is an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty.

Pros: superb picture and very good sound; marvelous samurai film not generally known
Cons: lack of extras for a Criterion release

When one hears the phrase “Japanese samurai movie,” naturally one’s thoughts immediately go to Akira Kurosawa who directed some of the finest ones ever made. But Hideo Gosha’s Three Outlaw Samurai can hold its head high alongside the Kurosawa classics. Not generally known in the West, Hideo Gosha specialized in samurai and yakuza films, and this movie, his first feature, shows him off to a sterling start in a story that’s alive with fierce action and some thoughtful passages on the nature of pride and loyalty.
