Cons: No New Extras, No HD Sound
The Blues Brothers holds the distinction of being the first SNL sketch to graduate into a complete movie on its own. And it's a funny movie, regularly punctuated by solid performances by R&B greats like Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and James Brown. It arrives on Blu-ray with both cuts of the film receiving good-looking AVC transfers. Since the BD-50 has been maxed out by the two transfers, there is not enough room to include HD sound for either cut. On the other hand, the DTS 5.1 mix isn't a bad one by any means. Most, but not all, of the extras from the 2005 DVD are ported over for this release, but there are no new extras compiled for the Blu-ray. (Not even a music guide, unfortunately.) This is an entertaining movie and a good Blu-ray, but I believe fans will need to decide if the picture transfer alone is enough to justify the upgrade and an additional purchase.
