Cons: extras might have been a bit more detailed
When you have a multi-billion dollar franchise at stake, it might seem like a good idea not to mess with success. The problem with that idea is that with the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, each one got progressively more ridiculously elaborate and narratively incomprehensible than the previous one. So, it was very smart for producer Jerry Bruckheimer to hire Rob Marshall as the director of the fourth chapter of the series. With his guiding hand, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is refreshingly easy to follow and almost constitutes a reboot of the entire franchise. A large set of characters both old and new are still around, and the tale mixes the same action and adventure motifs with supernatural elements as before, but this film is a much better entertainment experience than At World’s End was (and half an hour shorter), and it flows much better and more consistently than Dead Man’s Chest. Fans who had become disenchanted with the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow as budgets increased and logic took a nosedive can watch this one with the same exciting sense of fun and frolic that distinguished the first film in the series.
