User Reviews: Panasonic DMP-BD15 9-Inch Portable 1080p Blu-ray Player
Featured Review
Cons: Price, no 1080P/60 output over HDMI (1080P/24 is output fine)
The DMP-B15 is a fine Blu-ray player. It’s essentially the well-regarded BD-Live-capable DMP-BD60K (with just bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA support) shrunk into a small package with an 8.9-inch WSVGA screen and a 2.5-hour battery. Unlike typical portable players that have a clamshell case and open up for viewing, the DMP-B15 has a built-in stand and is propped up like a digital photo frame. Initially, I wasn’t sure if I would like this, but it quickly grew on me and I now prefer it over the clamshell style. The buttons are located across the top including a five-way joystick for menu navigation and selection, although it is missing a “pause” button, which I hope they add in a future version.
The unit has a wired Ethernet jack that can be used for firmware updates, BD Live content or Panasonic's VIERA CAST content that brings together stock quotes, weather, Picasa web albums, YouTube and Amazon VOD. It has an SD card slot for saving BD Live content, but I also used it to play back AVCHD files on the SD card from my HD camcorder. The player has a headphone jack, a combination video in/out jack and a HDMI jack. It comes with a small, but full featured remote with volume control and an off timer, a cigarette lighter adapter, and a headrest adapter that lets it clip to a headrest for in-car viewing (see pictures).
Test patterns revealed that it did not suffer from the chroma bug, but through testing I found it only supports 1080P24 output over HDMI, not 1080P60. I have a 1080P DLP projector that had no problems accepting a 1080P24 input, but my first generation 1080P DLP TV doesn't support a 24FPS input. When hooked up to this TV over HDMI the player would only output 1080i/60. DVD playback looked great when viewed on both the built in screen and when hooked up to an external display.
It's not inexpensive, but between traveling and flexible in-house viewing, this player has more than justified its cost.
