After the sparkling triumph of Annie Hall and a not so well received sojourn into Bergmanesque angst with Interiors, Woody Allen turned his sights back to New York with the dark comedy Manhattan. The wry wit and sparkling banter from Annie Hall are still very much present (credit co-writer Marshall Brickman who wrote both films with Woody), but the personal stories here are more problem-filled and their resolutions hazier and much less certain of a happy ending. Like life.
