Cons: more for the younger set than their parents
John Schultz’s Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is another of those tween comedies, but unlike others released during the last few years, it routes its own path toward entertainment: it’s not about poop and fart jokes (only one poop joke in the entire film), it doesn’t spend most of its time tearing down misfit kids or adults to achieve a kind of hip putdown chic that’s currently so popular, and the fun that it generates is perfectly safe for family members of all ages. There’s not a lot of gut-busting humor, and the film strains to fill ninety minutes, but the characters are agreeable, and it’s a kind-hearted comedy that’s refreshing in an age where even kids’ comedies bask in cynicism.
