The DirecTV HR21 is the older model, but is now offered by many DirecTV receiver as part of the package to get you onto DirecTV cheaply.
The unit is surprisingly effective, channel tuning and switching is quick and crisp. Guide is easy to navigate, and the HR21 unit provides internet connectivity for DirecTV's "download" content.
The unit's big failing is still the same; DirecTV ships rather poor, almost fisher-price childrens toy like remotes. The remote control is clunky, thick, heavy without any real bonus features.
The unit has one perk that made me happy on purchase; it is incredibly easy to expand DVR space by hanging a USB HDD. That alone is worth it.
