Blue Valentine unfolds in two time periods separated by six years. In the present, Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) are a married couple with a young daughter, Frankie (Faith Wladyka). In the past, we see Cindy and Dean when they first meet and fall for each other. Both were seekers with good hearts but grave doubts about finding true love. From the vantage point of that moment in time, these two might have been right for each other. Unfortunately, six years later, it’s clear they either never were or no longer are. Writer/director Derek Cianfrance went to extraordinary lengths to capture the emotional truth of Cindy and Dean's relationship, but he never forgets his obligations as a storyteller.
