Pros: Two great central performances, stylish direction, interesting story, great picture and sound
Cons: Weak spots in the script and some overdone moments hurt its credibility; minimal extras

Based on a novella by Stephen King, Apt Pupil tells the story of an overachieving sixteen-year-old (Brad Renfro) who finds an ex-Nazi (Ian McKellen) living next door and demands to learn about what he did in the service of Nazi Germany. While hampered by weak spots in the script and some overly convenient set-ups, the two main performances and the visual style of director Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-Men) make this disturbing psychological thriller worth a look.
