I can't for the life of me figure out how to get sound from my Samsung LN40B550 through my Yamaha YMC-500. I can get sound from my Apple TV 4 to the Yamaha YMC-500, so I know that works, but not through my TV.
  • The HDMI connections are fine. I can see the Yamaha YMC-500 set-up screen on my TV and hear sound through its apps through the TV.
  • It doesn't matter if I turn HDMI-CEC (AnyNet for Samsung) on or off on my TV.
  • I set sound on the TV to External Speakers.
  • I set up a new device on the receiver for Cable TV, though I'm not sure if there's a problem with the fact I don't have/want cable (I'm a 'cord cutter'), because there is only 'Cable TV' and 'Satellite' TV in the 'new device' options. What's also strange to me is that only HDMI In 1, 2, 3 are options when selecting the TV as a new device, and not the HDMI Out which is where I thought an HDMI cable is supposed to connect to the receiver.
  • I have an optical cable as well, but that doesn't work either when I choose that as the sound cable option.
I've been stuck for months. I'm starting to wonder if the problem is the receiver :( Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

Or, I seemed to have discovered that TVs weren't designed to connect to receivers without a cable box, and that cord cutters without a cable box like me are SOL.

If both devices support HDMI ARC (audio return channel) then sometimes that works (it can be flaky, depending on the manufacturers involved).

But for you, the optical connection should work fine.
