Hi all. 50 year old male residing in Central Florida (Spacecoast). Married and blessed with a High WAF spouse. I've been a technology fan for 30 years. Always fascinated with audio and home theater although my budget has often prevented me from taking it too far. Other hobbies include Corvettes, Flight and racing simulation (I'm a bit more over the top with the simulator setup).

Audio / Video gear:

Living Room entertainment area:

Mirage M-490 bookshelf Front L+R
Mirage MCC-R Center
Mirage FRX L+R surround.

Yamaha YST-SW160 Subwoofer. (weak link)

Pioneer VSX-824-K

Vizio 55" 4K D55-ud1

Home office/Game room/Man cave gear:

Pioneer SP-BS22 Front L+R
Pioneer SP-C22 Center
Insignia NS-SP213 surround L+R

Pioneer SW-8MK2

Harman Kardon AVR-1700

Insignia NS-55E480A13A 55" 1080P (weakest link)

As you can see. My gear is heavily leaning to the budget side. I try to do my research, read the forums, read the reviews and make the best choices I can. Always wanting to learn.

Anyway, thanks for having me. I've been reading posts (mostly on speakers) here for the past week. I have to say, I'm very impressed with the forum and the members. Your posts have allowed me to get comfortable enough to actually post my intro and my gear without fear of ridicule, LOL.

Welcome Paul, I too am relatively new compared to most of the Gurus on the forum. Everyone has been very helpful in some questions I had when setting up my system a month or so ago so you have come to the right forum. You won't see any ridicule here although some the the guys are a bit gruff at times.

Hello all.

I've known of the existence of this forum for many years, but never joined up because at the time I didn't have a "traditional" home theater that most of you would associate the phrase with. In actuality I've had a home theater for many decades, but with 35mm and 16mm film. It is only recently that I've jumped into the electronic home theater realm.

While digital projection is a newly added piece to my home theater, my setup consists on a 105" diagonal screen that is roughly 2.35:1 (it was designed for scope film projection with other ratios being constant image height (CIH) using various lenses of different focal lengths for 1.85 and 1.37). Digital projection is via a Panasonic AE8000 with a throw of about 14 feet. The motorized lens of the Panasonic makes CIH adjustments in digital a simple push of the button.

Film projection is with a Simplex SP semi-portable 35mm projector which has been modified to add both 4 track magnetic and optical stereo sound. Light is provided by a 500 watt Xenon lamphouse. The film projector sits behind a wall in a separate room (booth) to help contain the mechanical noise of the projector. I've been collecting film since the early 1970s.

Sound consists of rescued obsolete theater equipment for the optical and magnetic playback along with several old amplifiers to drive the three front speakers. For digital I bought a Sony A/V receiver which helps with the HDMI switching and getting the audio extracted from the HDMI signal. A set of A/B switches selects which of the two amplifiers drive the common speakers. For digital only I plan to add a set of rear surrounds.

Welcome Paul and Jeff.

Paul: LOVE your setup. I only have a moderate WAF myself so you are indeed a lucky man.

Jeff: Now you have what I call a Home Theater. We have a lot of film buffs that love film
as opposed to digital projection. Me I love them both. Just wish I had the real estate to
have one in my home. Nothing is quite like a projected image from movies to TV.

Thank you all.

Sam: Several of those film collector members are good friends of mine.

Parker: Yes, I had a "home theater" long before the term even came into general use. I've had 35mm capabilities since the 1970s. My other local film collector friends that have 35mm setups dwarf mine by comparison, but we all enjoy watching films at each others respective theaters,

I do have a couple of YouTube videos of my 35mm equipment in operation:

There have been a few minor changes made since these were photographed. I've changed how the feed reel operates as I had problems with film snapping when I started up unless that long feed was taught. Any slack and I could get a break. The feed reel is now positioned on the ceiling directly above the projector. Currently the booth area is disassembled as I'm going through some renovations in this area and everything had to be removed, but hope to reassemble it within the next month or so.

Parker, yes, we have had movie nights. Although I haven't had one in several years. As soon as I get my basement finished and booth back together I plan to have one. Now with the addition of the digital projector I can have "hybrid" shows where I use both the film and digital projector. I've had a 35mm feature I've wanted to show for some time, but I only have the first 2 of 4 reels. I just got the DVD from Warner's MOD archive so now I can show the entire thing!

Jeff:

You should set up a backyard screen and have a good ol' night out at the drive-thru
in your backyard.

Be sure to upload some pictures of your place as you get your basement finished
and your booth together.
